  • As we continue sailing in Norway on our way to Svalbard from Scotland. We make our way further north up the Norwegian coast and cross into the arctic circle. We visit the fjords and Svartisan glacier, the island of Bolga and the city of Bodø. And are forced to dive under the boat to make some emergency repairs.

That’s a small wetsuit for damn cold water. Did a good job just getting in there!
Refreshing to not have all the hubala like so many other sailing channels. I have a long list on ignore. 😂
New sub, look forward to following your journey. :)

Loved the views of the glacier, looked spectacular, I’ll have to see one for myself. Great work Sal on saving the entire trip with your underwater repair work after Miles bailed out, we all know who does the real work onboard Hiraeth.

“ I begrudgingly took the plunge”. Classic! It’s the matter of fact humour, great commentary and focus on the sailing and the world around you that makes the channel such a good watch. And I reckon dry suits and shorty wetsuits are the new click bait beach wear. As a matter of interest, what camera equipment do you use?

A lot of the footage was taken on a GoPro Hero 10, some with a Sony A600 and the drone was a DJI Mavic Air but unfortunately, these don't float 😥so we are in the market for a new one. 🚁

Absolutely brilliant episode! I so wish you had filmed sailing onto the dock, I would have liked to see that and appreciate the skill. Keep making videos you are both awsome. My favourite uk sailing channel now!

That was a bold move, sailing between docks without an engine. Presumably you are in some significant water depths there, so did not have the comfort of knowing that you could drop an anchor if the wind dropped or changed?

Lucky you found anode problem. We had to get a tow home to Malahide’s because our anode jammed and stopped prop shaft turning when we turned into the channel because waves behind us pushed the anode forward

More scenery to gladden the heart, although tinged with sadness at the sight of the retreating glacier. Get ‘em while they’re cold, once they’re gone they’re gone.
The Hiraeth team’s entry into the 2022 Bolga free-diving championships was a pretty poor show if I’m honest. Maybe Miles can work on his technique, come back this summer and battle it out for a spot on the podium. Joking aside, the prop anode issue highlights how even the best planned voyage can quickly unravel. The list of things on a boat that could go wrong at any moment is exhausting, so if you’re thinking of heading for a life of adventure on the high seas and you’re in any doubt about your capabilities then perhaps it might be best to stick to dry land.

What a real adventure, and yes, that water is cold! Here in Alaska, our water temps are about 7c on average throughout the year and I've only ever had to swim in it once because of something going on w/ my boat! Also, I'm wondering if you were unable to get someone to tow you the 50 miles to the place that had the dive shop? Your video said the town only had about 50 people in it so I can see how it might be difficult to get someone to offer a tow of that length but it's pretty risky trying to sail out of the harbor and into a larger body of water w/out an engine!
I crewed on a sailboat that once had to sail 40 miles, over the course of two days, to a remote dock because we'd ran out of fuel (skipper thought he'd filled both tanks) and had to sail up to the fuel dock. It's a good feeling when you can do that!
I didn't know that the glacier you visited is the lowest one in Europe. Are there no 'tidewater' glaciers there, where the glacier actually touches the ocean? We have a few tidewater glaciers here in SE Alaska, and some 'hanging glaciers', which are ones that don't reach down into the ocean or into a lake. Here in Alaska, we're very aware of the impacts of climate change. The tundra is rapidly warming, the permafrost is melting, our glaciers are receding at a rapid rate, and snow pack in the alpine sometimes isn't at normal levels, etc. I made a video in honor of the Mendenhall glacier, which is visible from our road system and can be hiked to during the summer and winter (easier in winter when the fresh water lake in front of the glacier is frozen), to honor its legacy. ua-cam.com/video/9eJJ15UO-1k/v-deo.html
