  • Leaving Lofoten and mainland Norway behind us, we venture into the Barents sea to continue sailing to Svalbard.
We stop at the seldom-visited island of Bjørnøya (Bjornoja) known in English as Bear Island.
Where we explore the caves in the sea cliffs, find abandoned whaling stations and sadly a large amount of plastic pollution.
All music for the video was provided by Josh Woodward.

More magnificent footage, beautifully edited too, and I like the environmental message. I guess if even one person sees the detritus on the beach and makes an effort to reduce their consumption of single-use plastic then you can consider this video a success. We all want the world to stay beautiful, and we definitely need it to remain habitable, so it's important to show the impact we have that is invisible to most of us.

The apparently laid back approach to everything you do hides the amazing amount of thought and preparation you put in to everything from preparing “Hiraeth”, to passage planning and weather routing. You make it look so easy (including editing the episodes). Absolutely stunning footage, too. A real advert for sailing in Norway.

Really enjoyed the journey, Bear island is like something out of a movie.
Shame that plastic pollution turns up even somewhere as remote as this.

Woke up this morning thinking about Svalbard and Jan Mayen. Just told my friend that I wanted to sail around Bjørnøya a long the way. I mean why not, it's there.

Very good and laidback video considering the seriousness of a major Arctic sea crossing, makes it look like a walk in the park. Nice shots of the caves too, haven't seen those before.

Great video! Really enjoy your site, so we’ll done. But……it would have been great to hear that you had taken a least on bag of plastic off the beach and didn’t leave it for someone else to do.

      Glad you're enjoying the videos.
Yes, noted. This was our mistake. We didn't make it clear that we did remove the plastic bottles and some of the other discarded fishing items that you can see on the beach.

Yes this is the route we took, we waited on anchor for a few hours in the open bay before the bridge. At slack tide we motored through, it is really well marked and relatively easy and lots of bird life to watch along the way.
Its all about timing but completely safe and easy to follow the many channel markers.
