After looking at these and the quickdaws I think I'm going to go with ironmaster because I think the tight, more balanced feel of the Ironmasters is worth the 15 extra seconds changing weights

Most adjustable dumbells are just too cumbersome, bulky and expensive. i have 3 dumbells with normal discs and screws, loaded heavy, medium, light (currently 34kg, 21kg, 16kg) and one small adjustable 2-14kg (cost 60USD new). all together costs WAY less, especially since i went with used market. like 200 bucks, + 50 bucks for a gym quality, used, adjustable bench. just takes up minimal amount of extra space and allows for really quick dropsets. eg from 34kg benchpress incline to 21kg to 16kg. i don't consider a 20-40s break for weight change a dropset. i only change the 3 main dumbbells from time to time for progressive overload, or slap on 5kg for squats etc. IMO, you get a better setup for less without adjustable dumbells, especially the heavy ones.

Taking a crack at a set. already had the magnets and the supplies at walmart were a total of $35 after taxes/etc. weights were $5. I'm adding some crazy strong hard drive magnets in the middle of mine. I have 4 of the 1.25 lb plate mates, so I already am sold on the concept. But, their offerings are expensive. It'll be interesting to see if I feel that the DIY fills me with enough confidence to use them without them dropping on my head. Would be a sad way to depart this world. Thanks for sharing your design. Saved me some expensive trial and error that would have happened. I like your approach better than what I would have come up with. If I like them, the next set will be $10. I will probably make a bunch of them if they turn out good.

it's not like people do drop sets like this anyway. The drop set is supposed to come into play after you've finished out your normals sets. whether you're going max or reps, the drop set is there to get you to go that little bit further. dropping after set 1 sabotages your max and only superficially increases your reps. Drop only once or twice after you've already shredded yourself.

Thanks for this video, super helpful for helping me to decide which one to buy. I do A LOT of drop sets, and other tricks to maximize my workout, because I'm very tall and an ectomorph. 18-20 seconds is very long to be as a "drop set" to me, since I try to keep my rest time between reps is 30s or 40s. It doesn't feel so different from the cheapest screw-on ones because those caps can be twisted on very fast by just giving one or two push. I think I will buy Powerblock instead

exactly. i have one with plastic handle, they are bad for quick switch. but i got another 2 with steel-handles and if i want to change, the screws are off and on just as fast as the Ironmaster. IM would be ok, at 1/2 or less of the price. i got 3 sets of normal dumbells with discs and screws, currently loaded 34kg, 21kg, 16kg and one small cheap (60bucks) adjustable 2-14kg. so, close to 200kg of weights (some discs are laying arround). i only change the fixed ones from time to time for progressive overload, or to slap on an extra 5kg for leg-day. with this setup i can do real dropsets with no breaks. like going from 34kg incline bench to 21kg. or 16kg curls to the adjustable (which is 2 seconds to switch). 20-40s to change is really not a dropset. i don't care about reps, i just go to failure, be it 8 reps or 18 reps, so i don't need fine adjustments all the way up. the whole setup cost 250USD including a gym quality, used, adjustable bench. lot's of weights were also bought on used marked. we have a very vivid one and i was able to pick up several times on way home from the company. they go very cheap, because no one wants to ship them and if you have to drive a lot, it's not worth it. i can only recommend this kind of setup over one light to very heavy adjustable dumbell. i also have 0.5 and 1.25kg discs, wich is great for progressive overload, even a bit unbalanced is no problem, giving you really small steps. here the 34kg set of Ironmaster is 900USD, that's just ridicoulous. i feel i get more usability out of 3 extra sets at 1/4 of the price. and they still fit neatly arround the bench, if i chose to clean up...

Question. What is your opinion on the length of the handle of the ironmaster dumbbells? It looks like a constant complaint on other reviewers videos is the imbalance the the extra long length handles make especially as you increase weight and for people like my wife that has small hands. It is the only thing holding me back from buying right now. Other than this they seem perfect for what we need.

I weighed my BF 552 in its entirety and each one is 53lbs each but it is stated as 52.5lbs. I weighed one powerblock elite exp with all the expansion sets and it was dead on at 90lbs as stated. But there’s probably some variance in between weights.

Sorry, I overthink things. Making this for my wife : ) After some time having built both, any thoughts on this one with the single long piece and 3 small pieces at the bottom vs. the other video of 3 taller pieces and 1 small piece at the bottom? ua-cam.com/video/RF_iK4OkaXg/v-deo.html And as a fan of Walking Dead... Lucille is best And being very frugal, a) I already have lots of scrap 2x4s to build either one - don't let cost influence your answer : ) b) I LOVE your thinking - spend money on tools and you can make things yourself. And it'll likely be better quality than what you could buy anyway!
