What's the big issue with the engines moving on their own? It actually makes more sense from a storytelling perspective that they can - otherwise, them needing drivers means they have no agency and aren't responsible for anything, because any hijinks that occur or accidents are the _drivers'_ fault. Any lessons the engines learn or scoldings the Fat Controller gives them are pointless, because they literally _can't_ do anything of their own volition. Are the engines pressuring their drivers to do what _they_ want? Even if that's the case, the drivers are more culpable by giving in.
