Welcome! As a woodworker and maker, I own several lasers and other machines in my shop that help my day to day functions. As a way to help the collective groups, I create these videos from a users perspective.
Laser Mirror Alignment | How To Guide | CO2
How to align your Chinese CO2 laser. If you're laser is not cutting well, giving you double lines, or cutting on one side of the bed but not the other, this is often an indication that you're NOT aligned.
This video will guide you on adjustments at Mirror 1 (M1), Mirror 2 (M2), and Mirror 3 (M3). Pay special attention as to where you're standing as it's important when making adjustments on your adjustment screws. Also note the NEAR and FAR positions. Our adjustments will occur in the FAR position as it will have the great impact on where the pulse hits.
I specifically use the OMTech AF2028-80, but this process will work on most CO2 lasers with a similar mirror setup.

So we can’t engrave in 40oz tumblers with the polar? Can you make a video if we can? I wanted to do 40oz 😢
Does the type of tape matter? Is painters masking tape okay?
Perfect 😊
Check out my new alignment video ua-cam.com/video/GyOKzy-riLE/v-deo.htmlsi=HJhGIq56dZNIR1-u
Hopefully I'm not dead in the water, but when trying to adjust mirrors 2 to 3, I can get a dot to appear on the tape when it is close range. When I move to the farthest point, I cannot get a dot to appear on the tape so far. Is there a best process of where to start to try and get it to hit the tape? I feel like I'm chasing a ghost in the sense that I don't want to keep over adjusting one way or trying to come back the other way, all while not knowing which way to truly go. I've tried putting a small piece of wood in front for a greater surface area, but still no luck. Starting at the tube to mirror 1 and then mirror 1 to mirror 2 went great according to the steps provided, but having a heck of a time with adjusting mirror 2. Thanks in advance for any possible help!
Im new to using a laser. Im trying to decide between the Polar, the 50w or 60w. I need something user friendly but versatile for a new home business. Do you have a suggestion or preference?
The 50w or 60w are going to be more versatile than the polar because of several things: - bigger workspace and depth - already includes a control panel which makes alignment and addressing errors easier - has more versatile mirror adjustments The cons is that you need to buy an upgraded inline fan because the stock fans are not very effective at all The perks of the polar is that it’s basically plug and play. Already includes an inline fan and you just need to learn how to use the software. But the polar does have some cons itself. The bed is not magnetic which makes holding down bowed material hard. It does not include a control panel which makes moving the laser head and identifying issues a pain. It has a smaller workspace. I own an AF2028-80 and I use it 90% of the time due to the versatility . Hope that helps. Whatever you choose don’t forget the discount code: LASERGUYS5OFF
@@EdmondsWoodshop Thank you! I ended up ordering the 60w and used your code. :)
Just curious...is there a reason to not move the mirror 3 up since there is slotted openings? Instead if swimming the tube?
There isn’t a reason not to. If you can move the head in the direction that you need then that may be easier to do.
Thanks so much, couldn't believe how trashed my original mirrors were, I know this will make a huge difference.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome thankyou, I've just installed a 4063 150w omtech machine, It came with 2 standard inline omtech fans and there not very good to say the least, so I purchased 2 x 6" AC infinity fans and wow what a difference, For anyone that wants to replace the newer white omtech inline fans the fan motor fits the omtech housing so no need to change the hoses it's a straight swap👍
Thanks for watching
I'm new and my lightburn is1.6.3 biginner mode should i do this?
Thanks for your content I'm learning a lot. As someone who's been a hobby 3D printer enthusiast I recently decided to try and make a small business out of it. I'm seriously considering also adding a Polar to the mix as I have lots of great ideas for engraved/cut products. I see you have a 3D printer sitting there and was surprised you didn't just print the risers? Also it seems like you could print some kind of alignment jig that would stick down the hole to keep the rollers in the correct position.
Actually if you join my polar community on FB you’ll see that I added a 3D print file for the polar that I created. The thought process behind this video was that everyone doesn’t have access to a 3D printer but they do have a laser so why not make laser cut risers?
Very clear explanation. Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback!
Been using an XTool for 2 years but just placed my order for this exact machine yesterday...if im only going to be engraving sheets of leatherette, do i need the whole set of tubes? I honestly just dont understand the concept of all the different tubes and why you would need them..any help would be grealt appereciated buddy...thanks for your videos and helping us!!
Make sure to join our FB group. Link is on the description box Diodes and co2 lasers are different. With the co2 the laser will focus through a lens. Those lenses can have different focal distances. The focal distance is the distance from the lens from the top of the material. Different focal length lenses have different capabilities. For example, a 1.5” focal length lens has the ability to focus to a finer dot size making it ideal for detailed engraving where a 4.0” focal length lens makes it more ideal for cutting. A well rounded focal length lens is the 2.0” because it’s the best of both worlds. As with any product, the quality will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. OMTech is decent but it’s made with cheap Chinese quality. American photonics is American made and small business owned. They make very good products. You can choose to use a loose lens that fits in your stock setup, or you can choose to use something like I have shown in the video. The advantage with American photonics is that the distance from the tip of the nozzle to the top of the workpiece already preestablished meaning there’s no guessing or testing involved to find out the distance. The lens is also glued in so cleaning it is pretty easy.
@@EdmondsWoodshopI will join the group now bud. Well that makes a whole lot of sense...thanks man!! I will start with the 50.8mm(2.0") w/nozzle and the American Photonics mirrors to get started. Anything else from them you reccomend? I'm doing most of the upgrades on the Laser Guys website..except the rotary..thats gotta wait a few weeks. Thanks again buddy. Not a lot of folks would have taken the time to explain that.
For sure you’ll need the in-line fan. If you took advantage of the last sale you should have gotten the chiller for free. Those would be my top two upgrades. If you have the extra finances, the Liberty controls air assist makes a huge difference, but don’t be afraid to hold off on it and learn the laser a bit first. Make sure to take advantage of our setup guide on the laser-guys website too. It there to help newer OMTech users from a user perspective
Hi Cam, great video, i have the same laser as you have in the video, but my pluse is about 2 inches below centre, i have made the height as far as it will go, im still about 2 inches short... iv run out of ideas on how to fix this... can you give me any insight, please many thanks in advance Catherine
Take a look at my newest alignment video. It’s a lot easier to follow and has new techniques
Thank you for the video, extremely helpful, I changed my tube because the power was low even on high setting, just wouldn't cut like it used to. However it still has the same problem, could this be a power supply issue?
This is an old alignment video. I have a new one out now with different techniques. If you think you’re having power output issues I’d try to run a power line test to see what kind of mA output you’re getting. I have the video on my channel. If you have an 80w you should be getting around 26-28 mA as a max output. If you can’t reach that it can be either the tube or the laser tube power supply
Hello thanks for the very helpful video. However my Pulse product a larger beam. Please can you help tell me why
Great video, realy help me out! Next step is setting the correct hight of the laser.. Searchlight for a good video on this now.. Greetings from the netherlands.
Haha. I away from the shop but was watching during lunch on my laptop (Which has Lightburn loaded). I opened Lightburn and was following along but it too me a second to realize, I have to be connected to the Polar to see and change some of these parameters. Anyway, great and inforitive video.
is that Atomstack rotary on your Amazon p[age directly compatible with the Polar straight out of the box? I already have my Polar on risers, but would like to upgrade the rotary from the included ones.
Yes. It matches directly. If you join our polar community you’ll find many successful users showing how to use it
@@EdmondsWoodshopThank you! No facebook here...I am not really (that is to say not at all) a fan of social media!!
You know tech is a US company based out of Anaheim California right?
We’ve been partnered with OMTech for over three years creating content for them and running their social platforms. OMTech is actually owned by Oceania international LLC headquarter in Shanghai China. OMTech products were formerly known as Orion Motor Tech, followed by preenex, and finally OMTech. I helped launch their Anaheim office. The more you know.
Thanks very much
Brilliant video and was very helpful. For anyone with a UK version, I had issues with the ring turning red, and nothing happened when I clicked start, but it would frame, focus and move around with the arrows fine just would start a job. Turns out you have to press the silver reset button on the front before processing a job. Ii believe the USA version don't have this button so I couldn't find any reference about it.
completely unrelated to the mirrors, but what beam combiner do you have on your machine? I'm trying to get something that works but my clearances are so small on the laser i have. The way you have yours installed would work like a charm for me. Any info you could give would be great. Thanks!
Do you have an OMTech? Only the AF2028-80 model comes with this beam combiner. It works great for me. Unfortunately they don’t sell it online, HOWEVER if you call the office and ask for them to sell you the beam combiner from the AF2028-80w they might be willing to do so. In our FB community, I suggested the same thing and have heard of many successful calls. You can also try and tell them that you have an AF2028-80 and yours busted and need a new one.
@@EdmondsWoodshop Awesome! Thank you for the info. I have reached out and hopefully will get some info on it. What community on FB? I essentially quit social media a few years ago, but I'm willing to drop in for some good info and collaboration. 🙂
Have you found a way to completely turn off air assist? Engraving some material looks so much better with no air assist.
You can toggle the air assist off in lightburn in your cut layers menu. Did they change that capability?
@@EdmondsWoodshop I guess so they said its automatically on. sorry. The lightburn tap doesn't turn it off. It makes my engraving look bad. Guess I have to install a on/off stitch for the pump.
Ijust received my AF2028. Thank you for the channel. It was a breeze to install my CO2 tube!
Awesome! Make sure to check out our OMTech setup guide at laser-guys.com/setup
Thank you so much! I watch this video every time I do maintenance on my laser. Instructions are clear and concise. Tried using reverse alignment tool and ended up trashing it. Thanks again.
Awesome. Glad to hear. Tried to break it down as much as I could. I too threw away the reverse alignment tool. Thanks for the feedback
Thank you
looking at getting this machine, do you know if 5mm perspex/acrylics can be cut on this machine?
Absolutely. Make sure to join our polar Facebook community linked in the description. We have people doing all sorts of designs on 6mm acrylics all the time.
@@EdmondsWoodshop awesome will definitely do!!
Nice video! If you have an autofocus CO2 laser, does this make the autofocus obsolete?
Depends on your laser and how they setup their settings. If you have an OMTech laser you need to calibrate your autofocus meaning that you have to find out the focal distance first through a ramp test and then input that number into your settings. After that, you can use your autofocus
@@EdmondsWoodshop excellent...thank you very much for that info. I narrowed down my first CO2 purchase to OMTech, but because I'm not in a super rush...I'll wait for the next Polar to be released. This is purely for fun, so I really don't want a large laser.
Hi, Does it matter where your gantry is located when aligning mirror 2 to 3?
I usually do it in the center of the Y axis
@@EdmondsWoodshop Thank you. I ended up getting things figured out. I was having issues with the far right corner not cutting. ( I made sure the beam was coming out of mirror 3 to the nozzle at the 90 degrees.) your video was a huge help!!
QUESTION -- I'm new to co2 lasers. But Been using Diode lasers for a while now. my question is my speed and power settings that I put into lightburn are not loading into my omtech 2028-80 controller. and, I have been setting the parameters into the controller manually... How do I make the settings from Lightburn transfer into my laser controller ?? Thank you for any help with this...
Did you upgrade your lightburn license from gcode to DSP. Diodes run off the gcode license where the OMTech lasers with ruida controllers run off the DSP license. Once you upgrade you’ll have access to both. If you did upgrade, it sounds like your controller isn’t communicating with lightburn. For further help, please join our FB community linked in the description
@@EdmondsWoodshop I did upgrade to DSP but for some reason it was losing communication with the laser I am using Cat5 cable for coms. I switched out the cable for a new cable and I am no longer having that issue... Thank you so much for your response and for all the great videos you have to help Newbies like me out !!!
So basically we are trying to match the far position to be same with near position? If the near position is not centered what we do first?
perfect timing i am getting a polar shortly!!
We just moved our laser about 160 miles. When we got all the electrical ran, it cut great. But today it wasn’t working too well. This is the first time I’ve used it since we moved. So I am going to do an adjustment on it. Your video looks like it will be a huge help. Will update my results. Thanks man.
Thank you so much. I am getting mine on Tuesday and I have never had one before. I need a lot of tutorials 😂
Just installed the American Photonics 2.5" FL kit and this tutorial is just what I needed. Thank you Cam!
Just wondering if the used mirrors can be reused / recoated ?
Not 100% sure the process to do that, but a set of mirrors are so inexpensive it may not be worth doing. Roughly $25 a set
@@EdmondsWoodshop recycling could bring the cost to less than $5....and definitely help in conservation of global resources... im working on this.. if you get any information do share....
Wow I just saw your video. That it's not good news for me. I just bought the machine I am waiting to be deliver. I watch to do 40oz 😢

Have you thought of adding a red dot to your Polar Pro? If you have mentioned it, sorry if I missed it. How is your laser going now?
I actually had the MAS effects red dot. It’s a pretty awesome device. It’s great for people that need a red dot indicator for visualization of where the laser is going to hit. I didn’t actually need it for what I do so I ended up donating it to my Polar FB group
Omtech does not have this tube available for sale on their website and after searching for 30 minutes or so I can't find the YL T10 (or Yong LI T10) or any other iteration of this spelling anywhere on the internet. It seems like when the tube does need replacing, this machine becomes a Bic lighter that ran out of fluid.
From what I’ve experienced in our group, people are having to call and OMTech is replacing through warranty or selling over the phone.
Can’t find replacement tubes online though…
Nope. You have to call OMTech directly. They’ll sell you one over the phone.
Can you do it on 1.6.00 ?
I have been lasering for about 8 years...the catch to that is that I had a GF so never had to worry about mirror alignment. I got my new OMtech a few days ago, and was terrified at relearning everything. Thanks sincerely for taking the time to share your knowledge. You made my first bump in the road so much easier to figure out. If someone isn't paying you for your knowledge, they should be.
Hi, I also have a setup guide at laser-guys.com/setup Hope it helps
Did you cut the letters out on laser too, or CNC?
Laser cut
Since you're in lightburn, you don't need to toggle the power outputs. You can just enable the "Cut selected graphics" and click each line as you want to run that test. Easy peezy. Good info on doing the test though.
Absolutely right.
Thank you. We constantly struggle with this at our Makerspace because we haven't had a clear understanding of how to align the mirrors. Sending a link to your video to our Discord channel for people to reference.
is there a trick to square the head to the table. Ive crashed mine into the x axis a few times due to incorrect ruida parameters and knocked the laser head crooked.
Can you post a link for the material please
Brushed aluminum finish. Yea I would like to check out the same material. How thick is it? I was kinda bummed out because I heard C02 lasers cant engrave metal. I think this could be a good work around. I'm new and I would hate to pay 5x more for materials that I will end up just learning on. So I saw duets by Gemini. I will have to look that up.
Was that a punch to mark the holes? Are those rivets, can you link?
I was a center punch to mark the holes. I really could have just lasered the marks. The nails were decorative studs for furniture. Bought them at our local hardware store
