Lyrics:
Sleeping lotus
Wake up, wake up
I've grown restless, searching through the darkness
Longing to prove myself (And rise out of the dirt)
A glimmer of hope dampened by constant defeat
Reaching through oblivion
God set me free
I feel weightless, I'm falling under
An endless dream, eternal slumber (Slumber)
I'm lost, I'm too far gone (Too far gone)
Show me a sign so I can follow your every word (Your every word)
Lost sight of who I am
God, no one understands (Understands)
Sleeping lotus
Wake up, wakе up
Sleeping lotus
Wake up, wake up
Stagnant, complacent
Anxiеty's chokehold pulls me down
A tattered lily amongst the dancing waters
Iridescent beauty waiting to be found
I've grown restless, searching through the darkness
Longing to prove myself (And rise out of the dirt)
A glimmer of hope dampened by constant defeat
Reaching through oblivion
God set me free
I feel weightless, I'm falling under
An endless dream, eternal slumber (Slumber)
I'm lost, I'm too far gone (Too far gone)
Show me a sign so I can follow your every word (Your every word)
Lost sight of who I am
God, no one understands (Understands)
Encompassed heart, time ticks away
A weathered seedling
I wither and decay
God, water these roots and drown out the doubt
Nourish my purpose
Turn me inside out
Illuminate your design
I'll leave the old me behind
Arise sleeping lotus
A fever dream (A fever dream)
Drowning the flower that never blooms
Repeating the cycle the darkness consumes
(I feel weightless, I'm falling under)
(An endless dream, eternal slumber)
I'm lost, I'm too far gone (Too far gone)
Show me a sign so I can follow your every word (Your every word)
Follow your every word
Wake up
Revive the light
Purge the dark
Wake up
Renew the mind
Restore this heart

    Elijah Here. Huge ABR fan. I follow the band closely and know many of of their songs on guitar. Currently only two of the members claim Christ: Matt Griener and Jake Luhrs. All the other members have renounced it at this point sadly. Beyond that they have many writers and due to how they vote for songs etc has led to some gross songs such as identity, promoting what Gods word clearly does not. Brett is very anti-climate change (songs like the wake). Matt still seems solid in many ways. He wrote the song provisions which is theologically super solid.

    • @HeritageRestored
      @HeritageRestored 3 дні тому

      Yes, major changes have occurred. Part of the fear of man thing is that they have just accepted that they are not "Christian" anymore. Which is not great.

      @@HeritageRestored thanks for checking out the video! Between you covering JB and me covering Matt we could have easily made ABR Restored haha. So it sounds like we're on the same page with the lyrics. I knew I had identified climate stuff and thought "meh, oh well," but I didn't know that about Identity. Matt has always seemed genuine if not as outspoken as before, so ya, I'm willing to concede it's complicated. Just a bummer to watch that happen to your heros. You keeping an eye on Convictions btw?

      @@MetalSharpensMetala little. They are local to ohio and my brother has gone to a ton of their shows. I dont know enough to speak deeply on it. Also, dangerous is another new one that is a banger, lyrics by matt. The song is about p0rh addiction actually. Defender is about how Matts dad defended him during his the divorce that it sounds like his wife initiated. Thats another whole issue. Sadly both jake and matt have been through divorce and even if they were totally righteous in the situation it is hard to go through that and come out unscathed.

      @@HeritageRestored ya man, personal life stuff can spill over into your art so easily. Probably worth praying for them. But good to keep an eye on the lyrics each time anyway. Hey! Just found your channel and really enjoy the format. As far your critique of ABR's lyrics over time - whether or not their lyrics are more vague and less gospel centered is an objective thing that can be measured, so I think that you can say pretty certainly that they have. However, I don't think it's fair to attribute that change to a fear of man. It could be the reason, or it could not be. I believe that the verses you refer to in the video could be perfectly applied here! Are the bands lyrics now heretical? Has the band denounced their faith? If no, then show grace. Don't attribute the change of lyrics to sin (fear of man over God). I believe the Bible is clear on brothers showing brothers grace in these areas and always giving benefit of the doubt.

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal 12 днів тому

      Hey, welcome to the channel! Thanks for the thoughtful comment too. I'm not trying to kick them out of the kingdom by any means, but (if I were talking to them) would be prompting them to examine their own hearts about it. I agree I can't mindread and don't know for certain if they fear man. But those verses I mentioned don't preclude us from pointing out concerning issues in brothers. I had a thought experiment the other day to help describe some of my confusion. Take the motivational lyrics from a secular band of non Christians and compare them to some of the bands that call themselves Christian. Compare a whole album even. Would you have a good indication which band is which? If not, it points to a faith that might be trapped in the band's ribcage, rather than an outstretched candle like their artwork shows.

    • @kontainedkhaos7293
      @kontainedkhaos7293 12 днів тому

      @@MetalSharpensMetal We agree that their music has become less gospel centered over time. I would just disagree that the reason for that change is because they are in someway more ashamed of the gospel than they used to be. It could be the reason, or it could not be! If your brother sins, absolutely - call him to repentance. I'm just throwing out a general warning of immediately attributing the reason of something to be sinful. Very difficult to explain this over text, I'm sure we are talking passed each other to some extent. lol

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal 12 днів тому

      @@kontainedkhaos7293 I think I understand. You're saying it's kinda a 50/50 chance that's the reason. I don't even know that I called this a sinful potential move on their part in the video, but I can see how you'd make that connection. At the end of the day, I just want someone who's a Christian to be bold with their faith (more gospel centered!). I believe our theology and understanding of the gospel comes out through our fingertips and our lips, so it starts to paint a picture over time that things might not be on the right trajectory. I'd rather address those things earlier than see someone shipwreck their faith.

    Your video popped up in my feed. Was curious as I'm not a religious person. Opposite one could say. Ha. But I'm not here to bash anything. Point is, what I loved about ABR is they were openly Christian yet toured with alot of secular bands and weren't super preachy. And now there's a few members who aren't Christian at all anymore and I think openly atheist but the band is still together. It's nice to see a band not break up because of different religious views. Same happened to Underoath and I think Devil Wears Prada. Point is, nice to see a band who were strictly Christian turn into a band wirh different viewpoints and not break up because of it.

      Welcome to the channel! These guys have made some great music, and it's definitely significant that they've been a cohesive group for so long. I just have a much different view (as you probably gathered) in that if you are a Christian in a band, your views should be coming through in the lyrics, talking at shows, etc. I'll have a lot to say about that when I get around to my Underoath video lol, cause that seems like an even starker example. But thanks for clicking and discussing!

    Im bummed but I had to close the book on Sleep Token as a Christian. It was HARD because I genuinely loved their sound, but too many red flags against the fundamental beliefs of a Christian. The big one you touched on was the whole “Worship” theme.. idolizing and essentially worshiping a deity other then God (whether it just be lore or not). Another thing, and the final dagger in the heart was the recent revealing of their new costumes when the guitarist (I think it was) that now wears a pentagram on his coat. I’m fine with bands being neutral if they want to completely leave God out of their music, but satanic imagery and pseudo “worship” of a fake god got to be too much.

    Well the word epitaph does means what's written on a tombstone or monument. There's probably hundreds of stories in scifi that tell tales of aliens coming to earth and "judging us" whether we are still here or gone. I will mention the word chariot. It's also used in some conspiracy theory books to describe the vehicles that aliens came to earth. If you think about it a bit it does kind make sense. To me as you said aliens coming in horse and buggy would you even notice them arriving? Chariot would be more of a display piece. So I look at the meaning of the song as at the end of the day something is judging us who is in a higher position, that told us what we were doing was wrong. But with the words like plastic plaque, cancer, inexcusable being used to describe "ourselves" that there's really no way to save us seeing that we will always be considered below them. For example. I've known people who were drug addicts. They've been told by everyone that it's bad. That they need to get off the drugs, and they're trying their best to get off them, but at the end of the day many still see them as just druggies. So they feel there's no real way to escape.

    Appreciate the video and your perspective. As a fellow believer, I completely understand where you're coming from. However, my personal convictions towards music, not necessarily with Sleep Token specifically, but in general, have been quite different. As God created us in His image, we can't help but be creative as well. This goes for everyone, believers, and non-believers alike. Music is an art like any other and is completely relative. If it hinders your walk with Christ and/or inhibits your spiritual growth, then remove it from your life. If it encourages negative thoughts that could lead to negative actions, again, remove it. As we mature in our faith, I believe these red flags become easier to recognize. Sometimes, it's tough to decipher an artist's perspective. Despite his clear objectification of this girl, he's describing a very real human experience. Real enough that he felt inclined to create this song. At some point in time in one's life, the feelings expressed in this song could apply to anyone. From a Christian counseling point of view, the detail used in the lyrics to describe these feelings could be a great tool for helping someone who's struggling with these types of thoughts, but lacks the spiritual maturity to recognize them. The more I learn about Sleep Token, the more I realize that the "lore" they fabricated around their band is there to provide a layer of mystery for their audience and is most likely intended for entertainment purposes only. In conclusion, let's not forget that one of the largest and most influential producers of Christian music, Bethel, has been inundated with controversy. The enemy can attack from any angle, which is why it's on us to get in The Word and grow in Christ. Thanks again!

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal Місяць тому

      Thanks for the thoughtful response! A few thoughts: I think I totally agree with your first paragraph. I spoke about the concept of neutrality in art (spoiler: I don't think there is any) in my Plini video as well. I also just filmed a video today for an Opeth song off Ghost Reveries, which, if you're familiar, is a very dark album lyrically. Way worse than objectifying a girl you like haha. I don't endorse it, but I have a lot of praise for the band in some ways. Stay tuned for that. For the second point, I get that this can be a valid song when taken in isolation. I didn't open the can of worms in this video, but 90% of their songs are pretty sexualized. They have some that are way more suggestive than this, and when taken as a whole, I find it more problematic. A lot of this does come down to the Christian conscience like you said, and like Paul says, so I might not be in the same opinion as everyone here. But I do find the worship stuff about as troubling for Christians as bands that are actual satanists. As for Bethel...you'll find no pushback on that opinion from me 😂Both Bethel and Hillsong are rife with heresy and other issues like you said. They have written songs that are totally fine in themselves, but I think churches shouldn't financially support them by licensing the songs to play on Sundays. Because they're writing music specifically for the church, I'd be fine with more of a boycott for them than even Sleep Token if you can imagine it. So thanks for commenting and hopefully you're blessed by the vid! I'm biased but I think the more recent ones are even better haha.

    I lost my best friend to cancer around the time this song was released. I'm also not a theist and so a lot of the songs Architects wrote around this time and a little before resonated with me and still do. I'm curious about something you said, that the reason we value life is that somewhere inside of us we recognise that there's a creator. I don't understand how those two things are linked at all. I valued my friend's life because of its rarity and the joy he brought me but at no point did the fact that perhaps he was created by anything other than miraculous chance enter my mind to justify it. It didn't matter where he came from, or why he was here. The fact that he was was more than enough. It feels like a very large leap to imply that even though I don't believe in divine creation that somehow that's the conclusion I'd come to. The fact that we die is what makes life special in my eyes, not God.

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal Місяць тому

      Thanks for checking out the video, but I'm sorry to hear about your friend. That's tragic. To your question - the connection I was making was that we have objective value because we are made in the image of God. I don't mean that every person secretly thanks Him for being our Creator, but it's more of a question of foundations. People have meaning in a world where we were created for a specific purpose by a specific God, but in a materialistic universe, nothing has a foundation for mattering at all. Sure, you may have loved him and enjoyed your time, but once you and everyone who knew your friend die, his memory would be forgotten and it would be like he never existed. Even if you think of the butterfly effect of his life, once humanity dies out his existence would be meaningless. He could have existed or not and reality wouldn't ultimately be different. Not so in Christianity, where God specially makes us all with value and dignity. Even if you don't agree, hopefully my position makes more sense.

      @@MetalSharpensMetal I appreciate your condolences, and your reply. I understand how having a belief that human life is fundamentally valuable gives a particular perspective as opposed to what I believe, say. But it doesn't logically follow that the outcome of my existence or lack thereof will be any different than yours once our names and deeds are lost to time. We will both be forgotten by the living. I don't say this to try and poke fun or be disrespectful. I'm broadly agnostic to the idea of religiosity, and we'll all find out whether we were correct in our beliefs in the end. I just like to try and understand how people came to their beliefs and why they think they're on the right path, especially when it often requires such large leaps of faith. Something that, as a skeptic, is virtually anathema to me.

    • @MetalSharpensMetal
      @MetalSharpensMetal Місяць тому

      @@Fez135 I sense no disrespect, and I appreciate the conversation! I agree my name will be lost to human minds here on earth after enough time goes by. So the value I'm describing comes from something outside of humanity, and that's the God of the bible. (I'm not trying to prove Him by saying we have value, just that it's an outflow of my worldview) The bible does say that everyone knows God exists, but that we all suppress that knowledge in favor of our sin. When God breaks in and changes hearts, that's when we can really start to live in the way we were made to live. So I don't think I cleverly found the right path by accident - it was the grace of God. I just hope you think on these things and consider that we all have faith to believe anything in this life. I don't have more or less than you; we're just placing it in different things.

I was raised somewhat Christian (church of England so it's slightly different to the way the Yanks tend to do it 😉) but fell out of touch with it as it couldn't satisfactorily answer questions I needed answering, I imagine that's the case for most non-religous types. I wish I was able to just put my faith in things I can't know for certain, it seems like a more pleasant existence on the whole if I'm being honest. But I'm afraid I'm a little too far down the path of objective truths to want to turn back now. @@Fez135 haha Yanks. It seems like you've had a lot of questions and maybe feel like Christians either haven't thought about them or haven't wrestled with them honestly. There are probably many people like that, but I think anyone who dives into the deeper things of the world will realize there is so much we don't know, and that anything we do claim to know requires a foundation of faith in something (other people's words, the consistency of nature, our understanding of our own senses). My knowledge claims have faith in a self-revealing God who gave us the answers because He actually knows the answers and created things this way. You mentioned objective truth, which is funny. Usually it's the Christian who brings that up first haha. The reason being, we can't have anything objective without an objective truth giver. Non Christians can recognize these things, sure, but we as a species can't build our way to objectivity truth, logic, and morality. I'm guessing you may have heard some of this before, but probably not from the Church of England?
