Lyrics:
Part I. Slaughter Moon
[Verse 1]
The hoar sea enfolds us
The scent of the coming winter
Hear the howl of the wind
A song from the ocean’s womb
Far away behind us
Black smoke still rises high
Houses of the Southern God
Broken under the iron hooves
The iron hooves
[Chorus]
The time of slaughter moon
Sunless, starless ways
Sailing to world’s end
To meet our crown or doom
The time of slaughter moon
The season of the mist
We’re faring in the dark
Sinking into cold night
Into cold night
[Verse 2]
The grim sea unfolds us
The scent of the burning temples
Hear the wail of the waves
A song from the hidden deep
Far away from homely shores
And winter is on our tail
Driven by hunger and greed
Swallowed soon by the great worm
The great worm
[Chorus]
The time of slaughter moon
Sunless, starless ways
Sailing to world’s end
To meet our crown or doom
The time of slaughter moon
The season of the mist
We’re faring in the dark
Sinking into cold night
Into cold night
Part II. The Golden Wolf
[Intro]
And there, amidst the fog
A solemn mountain rises
Its pinnacle touching the grey sky
Silent spruces guarding the shores
[Verse 1]
There waits a grinning prize
Worthy of legend
There waits a golden wolf
A beast with six legs
There waits a grinning prize!
[Chorus]
And yet I search on
And yet I wait
To find your shadow
Amidst the darkest night
[Bridge]
Still I bear the flowers of pain
And still I bear flowers of solitude
Still I bear the flowers of pain
And still I bear flowers of solitude
[Verse 2]
What trick of gods is this?
Rewards and riches
Here within our reach
Yet not within our grasp!
Yet not within our grasp!
[Chorus]
And yet I search on
And yet I wait
To find your shadow
Amidst the darkest night
And yet I search on
And yet I wait
To find a place
Where no sorrow creeps in
===The Golden Wolf Pt 2===
And yet it wrings me
Like a strange cold hand
And yet it burns me
Like a viper’s tongue...
[x3]
[Chorus 2]
Better it would be
To lie on bed of silt
And watch the moon’s face
From under the waves
Better it would be
To rest on bed of mire
Inside the ocean’s womb
Dreaming of days long gone
Days long gone!
[Outro]
Sunless, starless
Pathless is the way

I listened to this album on repeat during a solo road trip across the country (USA) a couple of years ago. Passed through the most amazing hail storm, with massive rainbows somewhere in the Midwest. Amazing experience. This album as a soundtrack to that experience will live with me forever. Insomnium is one of my all time favorite bands ever since I discovered them around 2012. Their compositions are masterful. I suggest Omnium Gatherum too, the bands are fairly similar and they share a member or two with Insomnium.
That sounds like a great trip. I remember Omnium and haven't listened to them in a while, maybe it's time to get back. Thanks for checking out the channel!
@@MetalSharpensMetal Yeah man, just kind of stumbled across it while looking for katatonia reactions 😅. I subscribed. If you get back to Omnium Gatherum I’d suggest their latest ‘Origin’, or ‘New World Shadows’ (my favorite). Cheers.
Didn't see this mentioned in the current comments but the Winter's Gate album is technically one song. There are a movements within, hence the (parts) and it is typically split up into separate songs on Spotify and other streaming platforms. However, the album is one whole song. It is truly amazing and captivating throughout.
Good call out - I thought I had mentioned that, but I wasn't as clear. Thanks for watching!
A wonderful review! Niilo Sevänen is actually publishing his first full lenght novel just next month, also historical fiction dealing with vikings and supernatural events. Here in Finland and I suppose in Europe in general people have a less mythologized view of vikings than in the states, but viking beliefs and tales are a source of fascination and inspiration. So I don't think that the band admires a viking way of life (raping and pillaging) but it does make an interesting story for an album.
Thanks for the kind words!
The new novel sounds great, do you know if it's supposed to pair with an album or EP as well?
Also good to know about the immoral side of vikings haha. Everyone has issues when you look far enough back, so we might as well admire the good parts while condemning the bad.
Well insomnium just released an album called Anno 1696 a year ago (also a concept album accompanied by a short story), so I don't imagine there will be any new music in the near future. However since the upcoming novel is takes place in the same "world" as winters gate and is kind of a sequel, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the topic of the next album. @MetalSharpensMetal @@MetalSharpensMetal
Sure. I have always myself been fascinated by the vikings, probably because they are a kind of a last remnant of a pre-christian time in this part of the world. So their way of viewing the world is completely alien to us but they had their own sense of morality and purpose which are all really interesting.@@MetalSharpensMetal
@@hammervasaraa new album like this would be amazing.
Looking at the worldview and morality behind a story is the main reason this channel exists, so I like the background info from a European. Are you a Christian over there?
