Why I love Peter and Gwen
I love love. I love Spider-Man and call me morbid but I love my Spider-Man stories the way I love my Peter Parker; miserable. Because life isn't perfect. Life can be so very, very cruel. And life as a young adult is hard. Perhaps that’s why I’ve always felt so close to Spider-Man. The writers get it. It’s the cruel irony of star-crossed lovers that they are destined to fail. It’s the same preconception Spider-Man fans have going into any story that involves Gwen Stacy. Fans know that they are destined to fail. Gwen Stacy is, and has always been, the love interest that dies. It sounds gross reducing Gwen to a gimmick, and in any other context it would certainly feel gross. But it doesn’t. Director Marc Webb loves love. In this video essay I go into extensive detail why I love the tragic romance of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. This is for you, Peter and Gwen…My funny little Valentine.

Why Batman (1989) feels like a NIGHTMARE
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
In 1989 Tim Burton brought Batman to the big screen. Burton's roots in horror transformed Batman from the caped crusader of the 1940's, to the eternal Phantom of Gotham. In this analysis, I talk about Anton Furst's expressive transformation of Gotham City and how Burton's own gothic style revolutionised the character for decades to come. I actually enjoyed this movie when it came out because it went against expectations and offered something new to Star Wars. Constantly repeating the same formula again and again without bringing anything new in terms of symbolisms, ideas and themes makes it boring on the long run. It's not perfect, for sure, but I got what I came for :) The problem with this trilogy, in my opinion, is that it wasn't written as a whole. Each director had their vision and story they wanted to tell, Abrams wanting to erase the heritage of the prequels, Johnson wanting to correct the mistakes of the previous movie and Trevorrow preparing something new that would have tied loose ends and been more coherent than what we got in the end. I still don't understand why they chose to go back to Abrams for the third movie, when he stubbornly clung to his original idea and tried to go back to it instead of doing something at least remotely logical. The result was the weakest of the Star Wars movies (again, my opinion)

    Rey's parentage being nobodies was such a powerful statement. You don't have to come from a dynasty family to wield the force. That was the point of Broom Boy at the end, too. ANYONE can use the force, rich, poor, somebody, nobody. Who cares about your DNA?

    People who dislike the Last Jedi would do well to be more open to what the film is trying to say, rather than being upset that you expected one thing and received another. Fan service makes bad art, as evidenced by Rise of Skywalker.

    i really liked rian johnson's approach to the story, the movie is my favorite alongside with episodes 3 and 5, but i also understand why the fans were upset about it. i mean, if david lynch had given season two of twin peaks for someone else to direct and they completely changed the plot and motivations of the characters it would be very underwhelming for me as fan, even if the attempt was great when you consider it only by itself. it's bold and creative, but i think that by not considering it as part of a bigger story he definitely lost most of the intended public's approval... :/

    40:06 This is incorrect but I don’t think detracts from your point. At the very least, “The Shape Stalks” is used again when Michael kills Ray, but I’d argue this is acceptable by their viewpoint since, at this point in the story, we’re back to Laurie’s encounter with Michael. She’s the one who sees it next, after all

    The Last Jedi was a love letter to Star Wars. It has so much soul, the narrative delivers so many layers. It's a deep moving film, even if it has some flaws or some not-so-happy choices (like some goofy gag). I didn't love it at first, but it grew up in me after I watched it in the thatre. The fandom was already broken with Episode 7 and of course the Prequels. TLJ just let them explode, but it didn't nothing wrong. With The Acolyte it's happening quite the same.

    Honestly I don’t think we really needed the sequels. Prequels (then clone wars) and OT follow Anikin. It’s a complete story arc of the Chosen One. We could have had a very different final trilogy of Luke but while I enjoyed tfa and tlj, (ros was a POS) I didn’t really feel the full connection to the prequels and OT. Oh sure there were some characters there but it felt like a separate thing.

    As much as I dislike Ben Afflecks Batman and feel that Snyder doesn’t understand the character, I feel like his Batman could’ve worked very well had he not actually killed anyone. Him trying to kill Superman would’ve been much more effective if he had to justify it to himself as his first murder, deluding himself. Then after sparing Clark’s life he completes his arc and realised his wrongdoings, meaning he can have a great character story, without avoiding the consequences of killing people. It was also ruined by the fact that afterwards he goes on to kill more people, despite the fact that he was supposed to be against that.

    This video essay is build on the notion that the force is energy and doesn't pick a side. That's being a tad simplistic. In episode one, Qui-Gonn says that midi-chlorians living inside you communicate to you "the WILL of the force". And Qui-Gonn call the force "the Living Force", so this entire video essay is built on the wrong notion that the the force is like mindless heat energy or whatever. Sorry, it's a bit more complicated than that. Also, it has a light side and a dark side, and we can see that the dark side corrupts people (disfiguring them physically over time), so that seems to indicate that there is an evil (dark) side to this force.

    Thanks for figuring it out. I've thought The Last Jedi was one of the best Star Wars films since the day it came out. The fandom and their inability to understand this film frustrated me to no end. I actually was not a fan of The Force Awakens. Went into that film so excited and left disappointed after realizing that I just watched a reskin of A New Hope. Was this all that Star Wars fans had to look forward to? Just retreading the past and making meaningless nostalgia recalls? The Last Jedi, however, furthered the story and rejected the notion that it had to follow the same, tired path. I love it so much for that. It has something to say and gave you things to ponder after the credits ran. But of course Star Wars fans couldn't figure that out. They got upset because it challenged the norms. They cried and cried about it online, so the studio reversed their direction and we got THE WORST Star Wars film to date; The Rise of Skywalker. I'm still pissed with the fandom about that. If you can't embrace new ideas, we're just going to get retellings of the same old stories and the series will never evolve. The Last Jedi was crucified for doing something fresh and intelligent.

    • @LeCatization
      @LeCatization Місяць тому

      I had the complete opposite reaction when I saw this movie for the first time, I wasn't excited for the next film because TLJ felt so tired and repetitive. This film tries to make itself seem like its "reinventing" Star wars, and while it does have moments that differ from the norm, big picture wise, nothing changes at all. If anything the Last Jedi pushes the Sequel Trilogy in a direction far more similar to the OT. By the end of the movie: 1. Jedi still exist (Rey has the texts) and their culture has been reduced to a lone Jedi with Luke dying. The force sensitive orphans scene doesn't mean much when it isn't a new concept, and TFA already set up the possibility of more force users with Luke's unknown apprentices, but TLJ seemed to have axed that possibility. 2. The power dynamic between the Resistance and the First order basically became the same as the Rebels and empire when it initially wasn't. Even putting aside the destruction of the Republic, the Resistance were in an advantageous position by the end of TFA, but now they are a small struggling group against the seemingly abundant resources of the First order. 3. Rey now has an emotional connection to Kylo that wasn't there before, making them much more similar to Vader and Luke (he even offered to rule the galaxy with her). This makes it all the much worse for tension when he becomes the big bad since his "redemption" is so telegraphed. There isn't anything interesting that the Last Jedi does that isn't already covered by other Star Wars media. TLJ's messages about morality and subjectivity are so clumsily delivered, often being detrimentally simplistic and downright contradictory to its own narrative. While you can argue that it had scenes that are new for star wars, it does not set a new direction for the franchise in terms of the overarching story.

    I think the commentary on the Vigilante route kind of misses the point of it. It's all about the mindset as a player when making choices. When you approach the story with the mindset that "Joker" is destined to become a villain like in every other piece of Batman media, you make conscious decisions to steer him that direction because it feels like the correct choice. But if you approach the entire season with a blank slated mind, and treat John like a human being and a whole new character, the villain route feels unnatural. Like you got the "bad" ending. The Vigilante route resonates way more strongly with me than the Villain route because not even halfway through season 1 I knew this was not going to be the same rehashed Batman story. Your choices matter. Everything matters. Everything is different. John is not the Joker... Unless you MAKE him the Joker. I don't have the heart to steer him down the Villain path. I already know what's down there, and John doesn't deserve it. The stinger at the end of the Vigilante route where Bruce shows up to see John in his cell meant the world to me and left me with a genuinely happy smile.
