ARMSTRONG boards signal test v2
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 місяців тому
Although this test was done on a lake (so on flat water) the results are very conclusive - very good signal connection with the DW boards and the wing boards, as long as part of the board was kept out of the water. If the board goes underwater signal cuts out quickly - but this is true of most full carbon boards and is not specific to Armstrong. The prone boards (ironically called 'wing surf') ...
Light wind winging with the gen 2 Foil Drive
Переглядів 3,8 тис.Рік тому
The gen 2 Foil Drive has helped my winging so much, both for getting on foil in super light winds (and using a smaller wind-wing) or for using a size smaller foil in high wind. In both instances it gives me the confidence to go further and longer without the worry of what happens if the wind drops. With NOTHING to install on the deck and a super discreet hydrodynamic battery box and motor pod t...
THIS IS HYBRID FOILING - with the Gen 2 Assist Max from Foil Drive
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
A little taste of what the Assist Max is capable of - It lets you access locations and conditions you couldn't foil in before. It gives you the power to get on foil even with a small board and foil. It gives you so much run-time that you can motor around hunting and linking swell and waves for longer than your legs can last. It provides the safety to get yourself out of trouble and back to shor...
Surf foiling with the Foil Drive Gen 2 Assist Max & Assist Slim in Spain.

This was filmed with Xavi (owner of Wind Paradise surf & foil shop, Mataro, near Barcelona) just 2 days before the launch of the gen 2 foil drive assists. It shows how good both the assist slim and the assist max both are for pumping and linking waves, turning unsurfable conditions into a super fun foiling playground.

Axis rear stabs SKINNIES vs PROGRESSIVES
Переглядів 4,1 тис.Рік тому
My obsession with rear stabs continues. Having fallen in love with the progressive range a long time ago, I was reluctant to give much of my foil time over to the skinnies, and as such I think my bias prevented me from giving them a fair go when I was first given them to test. However, despite my predisposition towards the progressive range, I realised that I was actually beginning to choose a ...

Why I don't dock start (much) anymore (or... an alternative to dock starting)
Переглядів 40 тис.Рік тому
I used to dock start at every chance I got - I was one of the first few people to join the 'Dock Start' FaceBook group, and as far as I know I was the second person ever to utilise the ladder start method in the absence of a proper dock. My PB for continual flat water pumping from a dock (ladder) was 3 mins 2 secs (only once so I'm not sure if that was accurate but I've definitely done around 2...

Scotty* and me on prone boards using FoilDrive Assist Plus, while Trav, Jamie, Ryan & Mark were all SUP foiling with paddle power alone. Big shout out to the paddlers for putting in the effort, but I've got to say that having done a few downwinders now with paddlers, I've seen the effort first hand a few times now and it's rei...

Im building my first efoil, just makes me think i will fit my motor on bottom of mast with the wire threaded into mast and up to board, if I progress to pumping in waves I will just turn mast upside down , rethread the wire to the new mast top, to have motor at top, can i patent this idea, as i think im a genius
Awesome video! There's not much info about FD integrated masts on UA-cam or the FD owner's group. This is a no nonsense & very informative review on how the PC integrated mast works with FD. I also viewed your full length DW video using the PC integrated mast with FD. I was surprised by your limited FD assist use in both videos. This nicely demonstrated FD's low-drag hydrodynamic properties in the efoil position, and how a FD rider could enjoy a long session using the FD integrated efoil mast for surf and downwind riding. Like you mentioned in the video review, some riding conditions are well suited for this set-up. Could I reach out through the FD owner's group forum & ask you couple FD specific integrated mast questions. As the FD Euro ambassador I didn't want to ask about specific integrated mast brand ?'s, which could imply you favour one brand over another of those offered by FD. Thank you!
Hi, if I am 73kg and looking to flat water pump and do and do some small wake, wake thieving and maybe a bit behind a boat (2-4th wave) would I be better on the 1310 or the 1150 if I have the 75m aluminum mast? I would prefer the longer distance pumping of the 1310, but worried the agility trade off my not be worth the volume at my weight?
This is such a terrific video Dom, thanks for posting! You always discuss the pros/cons on whatever you're reviewing, it's great. Along with all the discussion on the integrated mast, you also get into some good stuff about honing downwind technique towards end of the video. What I wondered, was whether or not Paul & staff at FD have built/tested a HM carbon mast with motor pod in efoil position? Those masts have even less drag b/c shorter cord, & probably would offset the lower motor pod drag even more so,
I just got the axis integrated mast with the pod in the efoil position. I love it for flat water and downwinding! I weigh 85-87 kg so I went with the PNG 1310. I was already used to the sudden bow up movement because I had a 5-4 lift efoil with a folding prop. I´m getting 40 minutes (8-9 km) with a battery because I usually do 2 km upwind/downwind. I´m sure I´ll get much more time and distance when I drive further upwind and just come downwind the whole way. I used to have a pod with the 20cm cord, and it was very inefficient, noisy, and difficult with choppy water. I would eventually like to get a smaller foil so any thoughts as to where to go from a PNG 1310 (HPS 1050? PNG 1150? PNG 1010)?
Hi where would you put a v1 battery box on the 5ft board? Thank you
I am waiting for an all contained foil drive pod. Aonething to just clamp to the mast and be done. Maybe with lighter and better batteries.
Thanks for your effort!
Hello, what kind of wood and which thickness do you use for your platform?
Thanks for the video! Which foil set up did you use for the flatwater action in the end?
I've been winging the skinny 40 stab. So perfect when I'm powered on the wing. I'm looking for more stability, or maybe ease of use, to pump and ride smaller swell. Any thoughts on going with the skinny 55 up the stability and maybe make it easier for me to ride and pump the foils?
At 68 years of age and 81 kgs I'm having a hard time deciding on which board to get for my foil drive riding! I'm thinking more between the 60 or 50 liter but I may be wrong! No winging but a lot of surfing and some downwinding. Any thoughts about would be appreciated a lot!!
Hey when motor 15-20sm from board prop catching air , and impossible to ride , in rough water , how you deal with this ? Thanks !
Hi @dominichoskyns9091! Will there be a noticeable difference in turning ability between Skinny 365 and Progressive 350? They are very close in span and area.
I had the short red (non advanced) and practiced dock starting for a month, I believe I had my dockstart dialled in but always dropped out after 10-20meters of pumping. No idea what I was doing wrong and I was getting kind of frustrated. Then I watched your video and ordered the short red ADVANCED. The first day out with the new fuse I was doing laps around the float!!!
Ah yeh, and I'm on a 1310 with a 460v2 pump stab and a 75cm mast
I come from downwinding on a full weight efoil so this is sweet for me.
I would think that there is less wear and tear from having the pod in the water rather than slapping in and out of the water.
What's the advantage of the taller people on pumping to generate more speed compared to shorter guys? On pumping technique, will taller will benefit due to longer legs/limbs and leverage?
Very interesting and factual. Thanks a lot. What’s the Facebook Group you’re posting to?
Hi Dominic, I weigh around 68kg and was wondering if you would suggest the 1201 o 1401 for me in order to open up new opportunities (Downwinding, Distance/Dockpumping, Winging, Foildriving in flatwater), considering that I have the ART 1099 and PNG1130 in my Quiver? Also: Does the 19mm Alu Mast (up to 82cm) support the wingspan of either wing? 🙋🏻♂️
Would help to know what size fuselage and stabilizer you used
Can't wait til' the full review. You were having so much fun on that Spitfire!
Great video, you covered all the bases. Just curious, Ive been foil driving (Gen 1) with my SUP and wanted to transition to a prone board, what board model and size are you using in this video?
Has anyone attached a gen 1 fol drive system to this board?
Best explanation of why not try foil drive. I mostly wing but would love to ride the wave on calm days. Larry
They just want a great quiver. What do u think of a 100l Armstrong FG (cause that’s what I want for winging)?
The flash shark at 2:00 was hilarious 😅
Thanks for this video. You answered my question will I be able to learn basic foiling techniques with the drive in the e-foil position.
Can you share the foil drive you used in this video?
Nice,thanks
Looks like way to much hard work lol
So high on the mast🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hey Dominic, what is the thickness of the 50 litre ?
Hi Dominic great helpful content mate. Has this got the 2 or 3 prop setup in this ? 🙏🏻
2. This was before the 3 prop was available
Super helpful - thank you. Where were you positioning the drive trigger? I couldn’t tell from the video.
I attach the paddle mount to the boom (or handle) just in front of my front hand and push the trigger with my thumbs
@@dominichoskyns9091 ahh - got it. are you able to post a picture of how you mounted it?
I'd like to see more discussion about the ability to pump different wings. It's really hard to know if the problem is skill or having the right equipment. Although I'm old (68), I'm a decent wakeboarder and have become very comfortable riding the foil. But the pumping escapes me. I can pump away from the boat for 10-15 secs and then nothing. About 1 1/2 ago I bought the Slingshot FPUMP package assuming that it would be ideal for pumping. The Quantum 100 is huge and sluggish. I didn't see it as being pumping foil. Fortunately, it enabled me to drop the rope and ride continuously, which was my immediate goal at the time. This is me on the foil. ua-cam.com/video/wUhyuTcTZzo/v-deo.htmlsi=rLHzXe5jWuW6nGQL
I’m afraid I have no experience with slingshot so I don’t know what their foils are like for pumping. From that video it looks likeyou are moving the board (and foil) up and down in the water too much (a porpoising action). Focus on keeping the board more parallel to the water with each pump. You have to have a bit of down/up movement, but not that much or you kill your speed.
Thanks for the video. I am looking for a board to use for a long time. I am a 95 kilo beginner with a lot of surfing experience. My set up now. Foil drive Axis png 1310 49 liter 4.10 board ( old used … to small) Would you recommend 60 or 70 liter. I would like to use it for wing to.
70ltr
When you say you use the 50l for pretty much all wing foiling conditions, is this with or without a FD? I'm the same weight as you and hesitating between 50 or 60l as an all-round wing and FD board. Currently using a 55l and 65l board to cover light and strong winds.
If you’re talking about winging with AND without FD, I would definitely choose the 60
Hi Dominic! How do you guide the cable when putting the box forward or side under the chest? Thanks mate!
I use the board cable guides (as supplied by foil drive) along the rail to the back of the board and then go underneath at the back to the mast
@@dominichoskyns9091 thanks! So, I would need a longer cable. Do you know if FoilDrive sells longer cables for the assist gen1?
@@juanjogonzalez8084 2m is the longest
Dominic, please help me. PNG 1150 vs. a Spitfire 1100? Which one should I buy? My conditions are similar to that seen in your video or maybe even flatter.
For a beginner the PNG1150 is best. If you are a reasonable intermediate level and value performance over ease of use then the SF1100 is best
Mr Hoskyns, what is ur setup there?
Axis x foil drive prone DW board 5’ x 19” x 50ltrs, 800 ultra pro mast, spitfire 1180, advance ultrashort fuse, skinny 50, foil drive assist Max
Hey Dom. . . great explanation about the 'accelerator' effects of eAssist. I'm curious. . . what size battery you using there? Do you know it's configuration? 10S3p?
11s 3p
Hey Dominic, it takes you quite a while for you to get the films out. I know you are working hard but you are in a class of your own. Can you post a video shoot of you on some big waves... that would be great to see as you make it look so simple.
Thanks for the kind words. Setting up Foil Drive Europe has taken a lot of my time, and now I’m into event season so there’s not much time to spare, but I’m definitely planning on doing more videos in the future 🤙 Paul has just filmed a video of him using FD in waves while he was miked up so he could talk through FD technique. It’s not been released yet but keep a look out for it as it’s really good to hear his commentary as he foil surfs 👌
Hey Dominic! I'm probably going to relocate in Saudi Arabia and I'm looking at the closest places to go foil surfing, Oman looks to be at the top of the list. Could you recommend some beaches that could be easy to get to them for a weekend visit? Ideally close to the main airport....
Azaibah is where kite beach is. I’m not saying that’s the best spot in Oman for foiling but it’s the only easy place to get to from the airport. I used to live 10km from the airport and my usual 4km and 8km DW run was on that stretch of beach. Kite beach was halfway between my house and the airport. Conditions aren’t amazing but I was on the water nearly every day. Be prepared for some light wind days. Aseelah is an amazing spot but it’s 3.5 hours drive from the airport and only works May to July
@@dominichoskyns9091 thanks for the info!! I’m only interested in prone/foil drive, no wing for me…. Is Azaibah still a good option?
really great video, after a lot of research on the internet this is a really good explanation unlike other vague stuff. I have a go pro 9 and I mainly do windsurfing, tell me if it is possible to get good footage with the Sail video systems rod on the harness with that setup? Thank you!
I always use it with the GoPro Max 360 but with a normal GoPro I’m not sure how much you will get in frame. You may need a longer pole to get you and all your wind surfing gear in the frame.
What generation foil drive are you using in this video? Is it the oldest cheapest one? Or is it the assist version?
Which foil and stab you had on this ride?
Spitfire 1100 Can’t remember the stab, it could either be the p300 or the skinny 45. Definitely one of those two as that’s all I took with me on that trip
Dominic As I use F.one foils would I need to shim the mast for it to work with the right angle? On my custom wing board I need to shim the mast however as this is not winging... Thanks
It’s unlikely you’ll need a shim. I can’t guarantee it as I haven’t used f-one foils with these boards, but many brands have been used and none that I know of needed a shim
@@dominichoskyns9091 Thanks for the reply. Do you know by any chance if that board's tracks are at 0 degrees? Keep on the good work!
@@antonioduarte9535 not sure, sorry. I’ll ask Adrian
Nice Dom. Where are you these days?
The Foil Drive Europe office is in the Netherlands but I’m on the road travelling around Europe a lot this summer, doing my best to share Foil Drive with as many people as possible 🤙
They look great. Any idea on weights?
The 50ltr is 4.25kg and the 70ltr is around 5kg.
