  • Want to know where to position your FoilDrive motor on your mast? In this video I summarise the main reasons for choosing the 'e-foil' & the 'assist' motor positions, and which would be best for the type of foiling that you do.

Great video! I went through this "exercise" when wondering which FD to buy (FD, PC,..). As a total beginner I need to be able to move the motor up the mast as I (hopefully) progress my skill-level. At the end of the day my goal is to have a motor assist at the top of the mast for winging in low wind conditions and a safety net. Starting out though it will be at the bottom until I know how to foil. Therefore PC was not an option for me but would have been a no-brainer if the motor position was adjustable.
I think FD should develop their own mast where the "thin/end" part can be slid off. Depending on where the motor is positioned you will have different lengths that you can slide onto the the mast so that the cable is inside and the hydrodynamics still intact. Existing owners could upgrade to this version. I'm not an engineer but I would have gone done this route.

They tried very hard to do this but at this stage it’s just not possible. You just have to take my word that it’s a lot harder than you’d think. I’m sure they will keep trying and hopefully one day it’ll be possible

Hi Dominic, Thanks for the great video and information. Curious what your thoughts would be on catching boat wakes with the motor in the eFoil position on the integrated PC mast. Would it work okay? I don’t live near an ocean or anywhere I can downwind. So primary use would be eFoil, but I’d like to try wake foiling on passing by boat wakes. I wing foil where there is wind on the lakes here in middle of Canada and on winter vacations and just looking to get my wife and I more foil time for more practice. I weigh 70kg and she is less and likely to use our slingshot g900 wing and apple tree board with the mast. Thanks!

Hey when motor 15-20sm from board prop catching air , and impossible to ride , in rough water , how you deal with this ?
    Thanks !

Thanks so much for this video! So, if I want to learn to wingfoil, it seems you suggest one uses the 25 cm option. Can you confirm? Much appreciated!

Hi Dominic, thanx for your informative vids. I have a couple of questions I hope you can help with please. I'm at the beginning stage of learning to foil (as a surfer of 50+yrs) and have come across the FoilDrive scenario. Have been holding off buying foil gear until I feel a bit proficient behind the boat, and getting towed into waves.. can control up on foil ok, but waves not yet! When I buy gear it will probly be AXIS, so my questions are: 19 or 16mm mast? does the AXIS range fit both mast sizes? I am looking to prone surf.. but does using a FoilDrive mean I should go higher volume to keep the battery out of the water? I weigh 62kg and am pretty fit, so I want to be able to gear up in practical minimal sizing if possible, what front wing / stab / fuse would you suggest? I'm looking at getting a custom foilboard at 4'8" x 20.5 x 2.6 @37L. Thanx mate, hope you can help🙏

Seems like the next product evolution needs to be a combo Project Cedrus mast that can handle at least two motor positions,……or something even simpler like a PC mast/cable only option that can purchased by someone who already has PC FD+ and wants to add a second motor position without having to purchase a complete rig. Then you really have the best of both worlds😊. That should be easy for FD to do, but it also makes you wonder why they haven’t already offered PC mast/cable only option at the moment…..

As i understand it they have tried to make the Cedrus mast 'double ended', but from the engineering perspective it's just not possible - there's only so much space inside the mast, and more importantly it would mean having plugs that are exposed to salt water. Trust me, it's not as easy as you think - they tried really hard to find a way of doing it that wouldn't be compromised in day to day use. I think it's a similar reason why they don't offer a mast/cable option - plugs wear over time and will not be watertight.

@@dominichoskyns9091 yeah, I figure a single mast with multiple housed cables and motor ports is a tough engineering challenge. I still think a dedicated mast/cable only option is very doable with a well engineered waterproof connector to transferable motor assembly and battery. Still challenging, but much more doable. (Spent my career in engineering and had a startup company making end-of-line x-ray inspection tools for semiconductor fabs, so I definitely appreciate the challenges!). Either way, very informative video😀
