Great tips. I was just at Lowes buying these lights. For those people looking for them, the GE String A Long "constant" on lights are in a WHITE box and costs just a couple dollars more than the green box GE String A Long lights that go out when a single bulb fails. I've been using C9 but noticed several burned fronds when I opened up this past spring. I'll give these mini incandescents a try.
As always great info I prefer the C-9 since they give off more heat and I can control the temps in my palm boxes by simply screwing and unscrewing the bulbs♥️🤗🌴🇺🇸🇺🇸 Many Blessings 🇺🇸🌴🌴🌴🌴 Jose'
Thanks TN for taking the time to educate on the Palms can't grow here but they do! Subject. I am in Kirtland, Ohio just south of Lake Erie by about 14 miles. I am getting ready to bring out the styrafoam boxes and C9 lights next week which i took off as vacation.....i have 5 big Trachys and one large Sago Palm i planted in the ground from a pot this summer. I am yet to create the styrafoam box for the Sago.....do you have any advice on the Sago protection? I have not seen anything on the internet about inground sago protection in northern climates. I am in zone 6A off the shore of lake Erie. I'll shoot a video and post it to my youtube channel where i so far have only one video, but it is a start. I'll send you the link once its done so you can see what Kirtland Vic does with his Trachys.
Just guessing you could box it just like a palm. I am not sure what temps they take and I haven't had one. Looking forward to the vid and thanks for watching
With the Christmas lights, when it rains and water gets on them, don't they blow? Your Sabal Louisiana behind you looks great, I guess that is a Louisiana? This is a really interesting vid, thanks for talking about this.
@@tntropics thank you, maybe you can show how you tape your plugs and how you prevent water from getting in and blowing a circuit. I am just wondering about that.
@@tntropics Perfect, thanks a lot. I have Christmas lights blow a circuit because I don't do a good enough job keeping the water off the connections, where the lights attach to one another. You taped up those very well.
Another major myth! All my lights are 800watts and electricity here is 0.08108 cents per kWh. Running them 4 hours per day = $7.90/month. In reality for palm heating neeeds they just need to be run in cold under 20F or less which equals a few days or maybe $10 the whole season for 10 large palms.
how heavy of frost blanket since they range from 1/2oz to 4 oz? Also, do you leave the blankets and lights on through out the winter? Live in San Antonio Tx area and we have wide fluctuations of temperatures through out the winter months.....

Great video! I prefer the regular Christmas lights, easy to get and use. Though it seems the stores around me are switching to nearly only LED.
You can still find them for now
Thanks for sharing! This will be my first winter in zone 6B with my windmill Palm and sabal minor.

Yes I would agree C7/C9 are best solution for box method palms.

They work in all weather. I tape open plugs and keep water off thermocube. Been doing this for years

People would be surprised how much warmth mini Christmas lights can add, unless you live in Saskatchawan where it wouldn't help much. 😂
Yea they heated fine in our last years cold the only time I had trouble was in the super windy cold the previous year
Bang goes the electricity bill! 😂😂

@tntropics lol we get shafted here in the UK if it's not Electric or fuel it's normally groceries or something else 😂😂
Are the Sting A Long lights wrapped on the trunk under the Frost blanket or on top of the Frost blanket?
Under the frost cloth to hold the heat. You can use any brand that is outdoor rated and 40watts per 100 strand

One more question - Are ZIP TIES bad to use when gathering petioles up ? Not to tight of course - Appreciate your help friend
I haven't tried them but I can't see them being too bad. It's possible they might bruise 2-3 the petioles where they sit tightest
Q:
burlap vs frost cloth ?
Thanks
* in my higher elevation, winter humidity dampens the frost cloth. I don't box.
You could tarp the top and leave double layer frost cloth on vertical sides. Water won't go thru the frost cloth second layer on straight sides.
