I am an amateur clock maker and machinist with big ideas. My workshop is home built and full of vintage metalwork machinery and tooling.
My hobby is clock restoration and I am videoing my work on UA-cam, so I hope that you can join me on the journey. There will be occasional inputs from Archie, my quality controller (!) and some beautiful views at the end of each video showing the local Edinburgh area in which I am so lucky to live.
If you enjoy what you see, or have any questions, please leave me a comment and subscribe to my channel.

Why Did It STOP Ticking?
A grandfather clock that I had serviced 2 years ago stopped ticking, why?
It should have been good to go for another 2 to 3 years before it needed a service, so I was puzzled to why it now stops after a few seconds!
So I took the movement back to the workshop to investigate further.

Hello
Hey
@@katiemcalister2800 thank you James, hopefully see you soon! David
Nice car
Clock has to be in beat but that doesn't mean the seat board has to be level. Sometimes they are miles out.
that's very true @broadpete, I've yet to see a level house floor or mantle! For this one the clock was level and it sounded in beat so I knew the problem was elsewhere.
Wow! There's a much over-used and abused word, that I vowed never to use unless it's fully justified, but David, this is truly awesome. Good to see such an amazing product from Stanley Tech.
Thanks Paul, and much the same about yourself, renovating a house in France. Thanks for subscribing. Cheers David
Amazing David - what a journey
Thank you, David. That was so refreshing relaxing and soothing and interesting.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
Hi there, First off, thanks so much for your video! It’s awesome to see that people are still keeping these ticking along (pun intended). I recently rescued a grandfather clock off the side of the road-honestly, it’s like we were meant to find each other. I think it’s the same movement as in your video, but here’s where the plot thickens: I’m missing the pendulum crutch, the pendulum itself, *the* weight, and (because why not?) the small gear that moves the countwheel. Could you help me out with a few details? Specifically, the measurements of the pendulum and crutch, how the pendulum sits on the hook, and the diameter of that small gear. Oh, and one last thing-how heavy is the weight? You know, like... the weight of the weight? 😄 Thanks so much for your help!
Hello there Really busy work wise at the moment but I will see what I can do in the next few weeks when I can get more time. Thanks for watching!
Looking forward to the next video, watching from the States.
thank you 😊
Not a good clock for a beginner to learn on.
Very true, thanks for your comment.
Hi David I recently inherited a William Smith long case clock and the movement seems to be similar to what you show in the video. I am wondering if the movement you showed here had a half hour strike? Because I thought I remember mine to have had one at my gradparents place, however, there is none and I can not find any hint on it in the movement.
This particular movement did not have the 1/2 hour strike. I loved that clock but unfortunately it wasn't mine!
@@davidhaggarty thank you, I think mine does not either. And I have heard that there were rarely clocks from the ~1750s that did have one. I think everything is working now fine.
That's good to hear. Thanks for getting in touch, I should have another video coming out shortly.😊
A very handsome dog, too.
Thank you. He thinks so too!
Hi David! I've just found your channel trying to find some info about my very similar clock! It seems that we've got exactly the same mercury pendulum and the bell! Unfortunately, mine is around 60s delayed/day and I'd like to ask how to adjust it?
The speed of the clock is governed by the pendulum length. To speed the clock up you shorten the length. On the pendulum Mercury weight will be a thumbscrew to turn and shorten the length. Just a small fraction of a turn required to see the effect. Have fun!
I just bought a mercury pendulum clock with the candelabras at a local antique shop here in France. I have bought many clocks from him over the years but this mercury one fascinated me. Is your machine for putting the springs back homemade or can you buy them. I have another clock that someone poured a gallon of oil into the springs and I need to clean them.
Hello Peter. Yes the mercury pendulum clocks are fascinating and mine keeps excellent time. I made my own mainspring machine out of metal, based on a Joe Collins design which is easy and safe to use. I would certainly recommend making one, the plans are available free on-line (check out the NAWCC forums).
@@davidhaggarty cheers thanks for the info. I spent a happy afternoon cleaning the case and candle holders. I will need some marble polish as it's lost the shine it would have had from new. Of course there were paint splashes on it as well. The main mechanism is out and I'll get around to servicing it soon..
Well done David how much did the machines come in use lovely job

Great video I need to get one of those magnetizer / demagnetizer blocks. Suggestion - to stop the catgut or cable from unwinding from the barrel I use the blue painters tape ( 3M ) it holds well and never leaves any residue. I look forward to seeing more of your videos
That's a great suggestion regarding the 3M tape, and I will put that to the test next time! Thanks for your kind comments and I hope to get the next video out soon.
Thanks for your kind comment and welcome. I am working on another video which will be out very soon.
Hello David, I came across your channel by chance, and frankly I find it very interesting. I really like how you explain things. A cordial greeting from Spain.
Thanks for your kind comment and welcome. I am working on the next video which will be out soon. Thanks for watching
Hi David. I miss seeing you here with very helpful videos. Is everything okay ?
Thanks Bill, I'm ok and have spent the last few months restoring an old car! But I am back in the workshop now working on another clock video. Hopefully it will be out soon.
Dear David , I would like to give you a suggestion regarding your contents here on UA-cam. I noticed that you are very busy with your (to do list) besides repairing watches . How about combining other things that you do and upload here ? Per example your work with the beehive or repairing your car . I understand when you are inside your shop repairing your clocks you just set up your camera and you don’t have to deal with it anymore and the other activities you will need to be caring it everywhere and adjusting as well. Unless you prefer to keep your channel only for clock and watch repairs. I follow someone in England who was only focusing in one hobby of his and then he decided to record everything he does around the house and car repair . His number of followers was surprising. He has many similarities that you have such as A very calm voice , a clear pronunciation of words, a kind and shy way to communicate with your viewers, you don’t use any sound background in your videos , you appear to be passionate with what you do. Overall you are very talented like being the composer , the conductor and the orchestra ALL IN ONE . if you have the time to record what you do other then repairing clocks and watch I believe you will be even more successful. Use what you have : your personality and good looks . Combine both and shine high . Wishing you the best and great health .
@@BILLBRAZIL100Hello Bill, as you probably know I still do a full time job and so my time in the workshop is limited. When I video the clocks the job takes twice as long whilst I wrestle with cameras, and then the editing afterwards takes several hours to produce a video of a minimum standard that I'm happy with The other projects would take much longer. So hopefully when I retire I may be able to expand my horizons, I have got lots of projects lined up which I'd love to video! .Thanks for watching Bill, and take care.
1750's clock. Looks like the hadwen im finishing of. I'm have trouble with the hour hand. Which is unadjustable at the moment and I need help
Hi John, sorry I'm at work at the moment but I'll answer you later. Is your problem with not being able to remove the hour hand, or is the hour wheel not turning?
Great Video David!
Glad you enjoyed it
I saw more lathe spinning than moon dial turning. Yawn
Thanks for wasting my time with the dogs pics to extend the length of your videos. Also, watching you explain the moon dial as it turned was another good waste of my time. Thank goodness for 2x speed and fast-forwarding.
Hee hee,, the dog is more popular than me but I guess I have to live with that! Thanks anyways for watching, hopefully the next video will be more to your liking.
Cool
Would of liked to have heard it chime.
A good comment, as it was my first clock video there's always ways to improve and hopefully you'll hear the chimes on my later clock videos. Thanks for watching.
I think you just meshed a modern gear with a cycloidal gear.
Next time I will grind a cutter to exactly replicate the tooth profile - lessons were learnt! Thanks for watching
Great video David, thank you. Oh, and greeting from Bridgton Maine USA
Glad you enjoyed it
I enjoy your videos very much, please keep up the great work you do. I have a thirty hour chain driven clock and it was made by Peter Keetley, Tuxford. It has a swans neck pediment and the case is oak. The dial is brass with brass spandrels and it has a rocking ship in the lunette also it has a date wheel. I have solved a number of problems with it which is very gratifying. I have not been able to find anything about Peter Keetley searching online. Take care David and keep up the great work! Greg
Sounds like a lovely clock, I'd like to see a picture of it if you have time. Like you, I can't find any history on the clockmaker.
Hi David, what is your email, I will send pictures of the hood and the dial. Later on tomorrow I will send some full length pictures.@@davidhaggarty

Thankyou
Very interesting vid. I learned a lot about how the moon dial works and how different clocks have different mechanisms. Great vid, TYFP!
Thanks for your kind comments
I will travel for some knowledge
Hi I have two misbehaving 30hr movements any chance you could teach me
Hello Colin I'm not sure what your experience level is but first I suggest you subscribe to the UA-cam channel How to repair pendulum clocks. Matthew.Reid is a great teacher and his videos will tell you what you need to start as a beginner. He wrote a great book too. youtube.com/@howtorepairpendulumclocks?si=gB0vwGaxrKEJV8Te Let me know how you get on!
Next time remember to stop the clock when removing the hands😂
that's a good tip, thanks! 👍
Thank you for this. I have 2 moon phase grandfather clocks and neither date nor moon phase discs are working and looking down the side of the movement, it would appear that I have the same problem as you. I think it must be a common problem. Thanks for sharing. I don’t have the capability of making a gear so I guess no moon and no dates from now on. Out of interest, the face blank is exactly the same as mine although the decoration is different. So I imagine there was a forum somewhere churning these out and the clockmaker then did the decoration and the numbers et cetera.
Hello James, thanks for the kind comments. Apparently the mechanism did cause problems and it was often removed. Mine works fine at the moment but I could believe that dirt and grime could build up and stop it and to remove the wheels was a cheaper solution than cleaning the clock .
Thanks for these nice video so impressive. I have bought a nice grandfather clock recently, do you think i could show it to you, may be come one day to have some indications and expertise from you to restore it ? Christophe
I would be interested to look at some photos, including the escapement. I'm sure you will have many years enjoying your clock.
Hello David, thanks for your answer, I have prepared some photos but i do not know how to send them in my answer. I am beginner in communication in youtube. Also, for information i am french living in montreuil sur mer
@@christophehollande1829 you can send photos to my email address .emaildavidforinfo@gmail.com
Dear David, i tried to send you thé photos by mail but not sûre you reçeived them. Could you confirm ? Thanks à lot christophe
Dear Christophe, Yes I did get your photos, it's a lovely looking clock and with careful cleaning it should hopefully work once again. I have not worked on a mechanism like this so my advice is to try and get it to work and strike before you strip it down.so understand how it's meant to operate. Video it in action. Then take plenty of pictures at each stage of dismantling as this will be invaluable to you during reassembly I will be very interested to see how you get on. Good luck and enjoy the experience. If you're not sure, purchase another cheap mantle clock and take it apart for practice. You will get the feel for putting a clock back together and how careful you need to be, this will help your confidence when working on your grandfather clock. I would like to see the case photos if you have time. Kind regards David

If it was my clock i'd replace the springs and be done with it. Build a "Trorquinator" lol. Read Repairs channel @readrepairs, has just posted a video 2 days ago pondering the same dilemma of finding the correct torque/tension for a clock movement.
