Nothing fancy. Just a guy out there working on his property and playing with tractors. The things on here may or may not be done the best way but I do what works for me and learn new things by making mistakes.

Great job…God bless!
@@d.jackson7023 thanks!
961 is 40 Belt hp. The Row Crops lost power thru the funky drop box style outboard final drive like Allis had. The 861 utility had 50 Belt HP but more drawbar hp. Your 4000 looks to be an export from the headlights in the grille but it doesn't have the full fenders from Europe. I'm guessing likely Canada if it's English on the dash and hood placards. Your 4500 has a front mounted hydraulic pump and lots of internal differences behind the clutch especially with shuttle shift. I understood the rear housings carry wider axle bearings to handle the weight of a backhoe. Rear housings look similar externally but lacked some machining internally or in the case of axle bearings would be cut deeper. These tractirs were built tough. I was fairly young when these tractors were new, but they were all over our neighborhood. Several of each; everthing from 3000 to 8000, even a traded back red to blue 6000. My Father as well as myself were raised on Fords and a JD here and there. I have a 981 Diesel for Parades. Lots of people rolled their eyes at Ford but the 65 and up tractors were tough tough machines. Always thought the 7000 utility was dynamite in a small package.
I like it. But I did find the Jensen mb 300 a step up on speed power and bucket quality look at it closely before you choose I bought Jensen
Where did you find the steering handle extensions?
Nice rig! Looks like an English tractor by the headlight placement
@@3sparewashers-lg3gf thanks man. It's got an 8 lug axle, the English model has 6 lug axles.
@@NaterTater01 Good catch, didn't even notice! Must be somebody swapped a grille in or something then.
Andrew Camarata has a mini just like that. He likes his.
nice tractors
Thanks!
Something else you can do is what i have added to my digget em15. I add a 7 gallon external gas tank. On the ht10b i had i took back black cover off to change oil. And extended exhaust pipe. You could make back panel hinged. Will need to cut around counter weight. Then it be easier to get into
A nice video, thanks. My Hightop HT10 has the same body and very similar counterweight. Your video give me confidence to go ahead and take mine off so I can do some more mods. Thanks! @diggerdavesea
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!

Just TOO SLOW and too WEAK...I don't have the patience for that machine.
Get into the Air conditioning, take a cold shower, and drink lots, and lots of liquids!!! Great video!!!
That may have British pipe thread hose fittings being made in China,Yes very close to American pipe thread but not compatible. Wish these would come stock with wobble stivcks as it is easier to learn woble then multi stick.
I built a little backhoe using similar valves and my valve body is vertical, so the two joysticks stick up.. Unfortunately this makes the plumbing more complicated but I think it is the intended configuation
You're right! Vertical is the intended positioning
any links for the wobblesticks

nice i honestly was looking those from vevor
You should have hinged the back panel so you can get to the engine without having to disassemble everything.
Great idea! There's so much you can do with these little machines.
@NaterTater01 you can't hinge the rear panel on H12s because of the counter weight overlap. that works on some of the other machine designs. particularly the ones that don't have counter weights like DLK 12 machines and similar copies of that one. there is also a significan't design difference. some machines like DLK have an internal frame that support the seat so the side and rear panels are not structural. the H12 doesn't have this extra internal frame that takes up space. the rear and side panels are structural so they can't be hinged.
@@NaterTater01 check response to the original replier to save you some time :)
@@derekdal5185 I must respectfully agree and disagree. These machines cannot be hinged on one side but the can have toggle latches installed on both sides. That little trick moving the counterweight back was pretty cool. While it is sad that you must loosen all the bolts for the topside pieces next to the seats it is still easier to do that, loosen the latches on the sides and remove the back piece than to have to almost crawl into the engine compartment on your head to undo the 6 bolts holding the back piece on.
@@richardbrookins5406 I guess you're not disagreeing at all. "these units can't be hinged", true and you agree. maybe better communication is in order or just don't open with disagree and offer a different viable suggestion.
I love these little machines and that is a cool frame brace, nice work. I put on a hyd filter and cooler and I plan to put a magnetic oil plug on one side with drain extension on the other side. that is mainly due to the mess and that the engines don't have filters. I'm using air convection with a positive pressure engine bay. the cooler pulls cool air over the cooler and into the engine bay at the right bottom and I've put two fans pulling in on the left side. these blow over the pump and engine to increase heat dissipation and then all the air exits with the hot exhaust out the rear so the exhaust doesn't get sucked into the engine bay
That's awesome. I still wanna add a hydro cooler and filter, and the longer oil drain hose at some point.
@@NaterTater01 its a fun project to mod and get some useful work out of around the farm.. I forgot, I also added thumb quick connects using ISO-A 3/8. to make it easier to have a thumb and tilt bucket. I can feel the hyd cooler pulling cool air and cooling the fluid but I had to weld a custom mounting frame for it, good project. its hard finding the hyd connections, FYI they are metric DIN light - measure thread diameter for mm size. have fun!
Those spark plugs usually gap at 0.24,000 to 0.30,000 of A inch.
Thanks. I had no idea, I usually don't gap them.
Nice intro. I enjoyed the private conversation. 😆
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video brother
Thanks buddy!
Maybe a vacuum cleaner/ Wet dry, to stop the air breathing of the asbestos from the bell housing?
Didn't think about a shop vac. This backhoe doesn't have a clutch, so I'm not sure where the asbestos would come from. Everything I cleaned out of the bell housing was dried oil and dirt.
Another great video brother! Good thing you had eye protection on..
Thanks bud! Eye protection for sure!

For sealing those rust holes in the hyd. Tank, I would use "the right stuff" made by permatex. It comes in a caulking gun tube at Napa for $26. I saw a UA-cam video of a guy that used it to seal a huge hole in the side of an engine block of a boat. He said those engines only get up to 400 degrees.
I would buy or build a side tray or rack because it sure makes it easier and not so much bending over all day 😊
That's a great idea! Especially on those bigger logs.
Get it!
Another great video brother
Thanks bud
A stump that big wouldn't budge with two Mac's hooked to it !!
Looks great! I find that when rolling on paint, doing a second coat with a good and wet roller soon after the first works much better. My personal choice though is an airless sprayer. But, the rollers waste less paint and are easy to clean up (disposable tray and cover, throw em both on oil based), and you can get good results that way too. Cutting it very, very slightly with naphtha can help too. Just a hair though, it should be close to the viscosity of a somewhat thin motor oil. That said, I’m no painter, and I don’t have many skills in that wheelhouse :)
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind!
better off buying the nor trac machine, already has a bigger motor only has 2 sticks more like operating a regular back -hoe , better machine and right now there the same price as the HF unit !
Nor Trac is $3500 right now on the Northern Tool website. Harbor Freight is at $3000 on their website right now.
I patiently listened all the way to end, expecting you would operate it for us. Then we could see the speed, digging capability, moving itself along the ground, swing, reach, etc. Without that this video is a C- Additionally telling us how much they cost now would be a good thing, and where they have changed for good or bad.
Nice review! Gotta put it to work tho - review videos without any action are no fun
Absolutely no fun. Check out my other videos!
Excellent. A review thats actually a review, not the usual UA-cam "I took it out of the box it's great". I remember coupons you could actually use, those where the days
Yeah, I miss those days. When they first started they sold full size metal lathes. I remember the display they had for sale, super cheap and I passed it up.
I think the biggest defect is the multi peice pins in the boom. It will start getting sloppy and you will think something is flat wore out but it is just a pin came appart
Thanks for the vidja

Nice! Can you share this part # I think northern has 2 of them. What is the length?

How does that ripper work?
It works awesome. I had to do a slight modification to the trencher to get it to fit. I have a video on getting it fitted and using it. I'll put them in a playlist later on.
I use mine as a tractor attachment and love it
That's how I usually move it around the property
Guy in Australia digs opals with this... He runs hydraulic hoses down into the mine. no noise no heat. Grubs the room in an hour.
That's awesome!
Thanks for the info I want to get one to dig out some stumps - renting an excavator isn’t an option because where i live you need an operator license to rent. I have a couple of 20" stumps but most are under 16" Slow is fine since it will still be faster than a shovel and a come-along
Yeah, absolutely. It should work fine for that. If you go to curl the bucket and it stops from the pressure, just move out a little from the stump so you don't break anything.
Well done Nate! Cold outside here so I'm sitting inside watching you work.😁
Awesome, we had a colder week last week here!
Wish i had one. But if i did, Id merge it with a lawnmower so i can drive it around! Like, cut a lawnmower inhalf and weld/bolt things together :)
You read my mind. Lol
@@NaterTater01 next video :D?
@@woodzyfox4735 after I finish my backhoe.
just got one about 2 weeks ago . mine needed about 2 gallons of 32 hydraulic fluid . oil was good . only use ethanol free gas . and keep it out of the weather ! rain water leaking past the wing nut into the carburetor is a known problem that is EASILY AVOIDED with a little care .
Thanks for the info!
I know people who silicone it really good and they keep it in side barn No reason to take a chance 😊😊😊 The paint fades fast if left outside
My thought is this is fine in sandy soil or good black dirt, but where I live it simply wouldn't dig, I used to have a tarramite and it just really wouldn't do the job, not enough weight.
Yeah, where my dad lives it's got pretty tough clay, but once you break through the first 2 feet it's not bad.
Had mine about as long. First thing I did was replace the motor with a bigger one with an electric start. Bearings wore out on the boom, over than that I've had no issues.
That's awesome, I thought about adding a starter and battery to mine. It's really quite amazing that the original Robin engine still runs with no problems after all these years, never took the carb off once yet!
Nice video! If you had to choose between this and an old industrial backhoe, what would your choice be?
Thanks! Definitely the backhoe depending on size and price. If I don't have a truck big enough to haul it with then I might go with the trencher. I want to add some hydraulic motors to it later on so it's easier to move around. That will come after I finish the backhoe I'm working on.
Own this but rent an excavator when it's absolutely necessary. Heavy equipment maintenance is a pain in the butt.
I own a 1970 Case 580CK backhoe. I have $7500 into it already. It has been broke down in my yard since 2013. It leaks 10 gal. Transmission fluid out of the flywheel housing each night. Cheapest hyd. Oil at runnings is $55 for a 5 gal. Bucket. The engine and transmission are 1 solid piece and the loader is part of the frame. I do not have any equipment big enough to split the tractor on my lawn. Something to think about. For water lines in my area they have to be buried 8ft deep, because of frost. A person should really have something that digs 9 ft. They do have 3pt. Tractor backhoes that dig 9ft, but they are also very heavy and leak hyd. Fluid from every cylinder. Backhoe attachment for a skid steer does not dig very deep. I still don't know what is most feasible. Probably use the harbor freight for small jobs and rent a mini excavator 12,000lbs. For water line repairs. My buddy paid $300-$600 to rent one for the day.
Nice wood splitter
Thanks man
Brother you could have probably made a wood splitter out of your little backhoe / Ripper
I thought about that but I'd have to add more controls. I may one day.
