EP 83 - Gender Ideologies - with Helen Pluckrose
Helen Pluckrose is a political and cultural writer and commentator, addressing current affairs from a liberal humanist perspective. Her particular focus is current Critical Social Justice (woke) scholarship and activism. Helen took part in the Grievance Studies Affair (along with Peter Bogossian and James Lindsay) which submitted shoddy, ridiculous and ideologically biased papers to academic journals known for publishing Critical Social Justice scholarship. In 2020, she co-authored Cynical Theories with James Lindsay, which traced the evolution of postmodern thought into Critical Social Justice scholarship. In that same year, she co-founded Counterweight, an organization for helping individuals push back at authoritarian Critical Social Justice policies and training programs at their place of work, university or child's school. Helen continues to work with individuals and organizations to resist ideological capture. Helen really just wants you to value evidence-based epistemology and consistently liberal principles.

I don't think it's necessarily masterbating. I think we have different interpretations of the word "arousal". I suspect I have AGP, but for me, the arousal is absolutely more in the mind. I feel a great pleasure, confidence, etc. It's on several levels: imagining myself walking around as a woman, interacting as a woman, etc. It's not just physical fluid release.

Hi there, autoandrophilic woman. I havent even had name for that until recently. I will completely agree with Ray: it emerges very early. My first memory dates back to meing 4 or 5. It cannot be sexual at this age of course. It evolvrs throughout whole life gaining sexual drive at puberty. And even in adulthood it can be purely mental. Or even "spiritual" like when you have a sudden feeling that you look around with...with a male gaze. I dont know how to explain it profoundly...a daunting experience. And COSY at the same. As if you are more whole. And not alone...

I wish more people would talk about this. I know there's hefty discussions about AGP but AAP always seems so overlooked. It gives a scientific explanation for the way I feel, and it should be less stigmatized to have a conversation about it. I would like to give my perspective of this issue as a nonbinary person with AHE. I feel like some females are only attracted to highly feminized males, but since straight men being GNC is not normalized, they gravitate towards either a) the current state of the lesbian space or b) the gay men's community To add another layer onto why that attraction to males may turn itself inward, it is possible that these same females may be averse to heterosexual relationship dynamics. And only want to express their attraction to men when they feel it's an equal playing field. I also think it's possible for those with AAP/AHE to feel dysphoric as gender dysphoria could be caused by internalized misogyny, trauma or perhaps even a genetic predisposition to it. Personally, I've always been averse to heterosexual relationship dynamics, regardless of if I was the man or woman in that scenario. Being a man gives me just as much ick as being a woman does and even if I did transition I would only be interested in transmen, so I wouldn't really call it AAP for me and more of AHE, though some women may prefer the former over the latter.

I think changing terminology is kind of silly. But this idea of eara sure of women by words, something that is said . Makes it sound like women have no other things in their path. In the corporate world. In the US and many other western countries we have a decent amount of women governors, senators ECT. But still on average you know a women can put the same amount of work as a man and will not achieve the pay and seniority benefits as men.

When is big Aaron and little Aaron going to invite me on their show? 60 years old biological intersex from Tennessee mis-gendered by physician transitioned to male 30 years ago, no regrets. Raised in Deep South. Southern baptist school mocked and taunted by Christian kids, excluded and shamed by their christian parents and whipped by christian teachers for masculine behavior I could not change. Finally took the name they called me the most and made it my legal name. No surgery on kids ever, and that would include healthy intersex babies, toddlers, children and teens. Tennessee still gives green light for doctors to surgically mutilate intersex children while in 2023 Tennessee just made biological intersex birth certificates illegal to alter from gender declared at birth for the public welfare. No child needs surgery whether trans or biological intersex. They require a lot of support whether trans or intersex. That child will get to choose your nursing home one day so be real sure you aren't forcing that child into "your" belief system. It is no picnic or glamor movie to be a trans person or biological intersex. We lose our families, places to work or live, society hates us despite what Hollywood and UA-cam promote. Violence and death by violence is a common occurrence so naturally no parent should celebrate if their kid is truly gender dysphoric. My christian parents treated it like a phase "We were told to raise you like a female. The doctor said you would learn to behave like one so try harder." Been a 56 year long phase in my case. The Christine Jorgenson's, Aleshia Brevard's and those under Magnus Hirshfield before Dr. Benjamin were real people who struggled in a very harsh unforgiving world. The Nazi Reich destroyed Hirschfields work but Dr. Benjamin took the torch as did Dr. Stanely Biber and other brave surgeons despite the fear of hospital privileges revoked unable to earn a living as a doctor. Big and little Aaron still refuse to have me, or James Green or Susan Stryker on their show. A narrow lens funded by anti trans hate. New research of those who underwent early gender programs in the United States is underway but the overwhelming majority state no regrets. Truly gender dysphoric Elders, guinea pigs with more adversity than a couple of little whelps can comprehend.

I got a little frustrated with this interview. Aaron Terrell would babble on & on, not making any cogent point, & Helen would be quiet & patiently listen to what seemed like an endless series of words while, at least twice, Aaron Kimberly made a really great point & Helen interrupted him within SECONDS! He got one sentence out, if that, before she jumped in & he immediately stopped talking. I really wanted to hear more from Aaron Kimberly about the interesting points he made!

Hi everyone in the comments, I'm the guest in the video and would like to add a side note to this interview. If you're someone who has GD - there are people who understand you out there based on personal experiences, and see you as someone who is fully human beyond all labels. Don't rush in or out of anything- take it at your own pace. Please don't let anyone try to push you down or around for trying to comprehend the depth of your humanity- its a process, and it isn't easy- often it involves watching videos like these and drawing your own conclusions. It's trial and error: you will make mistakes and good decisions, there will be people on your journey who will bully you- and that bullying can actually be disguised as compassion, or may be outwardly be causticly presented. There will be people who will question you out of love in some of your decisions- recognizing the difference can be challenging. Western doctors and strangers are going to try to act like they have all the answers to the complexity of your personhood, and present solutions to problems that sometimes aren't problems at all. It's worth listening to different opinions and taking all of them with a grain of salt. In this video, I don't have all the answers, but I do have some objective concepts to lean on, and then some concepts that are subjective and evolving. One persons story is not everyones story in a particular demographic, and stories evolve. Please, take everything on the internet, and off of it, with a grain of salt. The best you can do is talk to people in person, ask them questions, hear their stories, share your own even if it is evolving, and veer away from the shame you have about being human. Thanks for reading and I hope this video was insightful in some way.

Everyone has an agenda to push , everyone has the truth to tell. The reality is everyone has an opinion, everyone has a different story to tell, and everyone will try to put that experience into a little box they can relate to. If this person feels that labelling her self as agp helps her to deal with it fine good for her. But let's not assume everyone else is in the same situation. I originally thought I was agp, but realised there are way too many flaws in the theory, that being modtctrans are actually agp. But going by what they said, a true agp may transition, but they soon transition back ( mtf anyway) if an agp transitions and stays that way and is happier in that life, well doesn't that mean they were trans all along?? And no , teans people do not get erections when they put on a dress, for a trans person there is nothing sexual at all in presenting as female. I certainly don't believe the so called trans ideology as well as being for everyone. I don't believe I am a woman born in the wrong body . I am a man who much rather be estrogen dominat than be controlled by testosterone. I demonstrate many female traits, but have no mad desire to wear dresses and high heels in public with outrageous make up. But what woman does, most women are out and about with trackie dacs and a t shirt on with no make up. Everyone just needs to chill and let people lead their own life without inforcing their version of the truth on them.

Great listening to Sasha and yourselves. Around 1:18:30, you touch on the "brain in the wrong body" hypothesis. Gender seems to short circuit this. Aaron K seems open to the possibility if future evidence supports this idea. But even in theory, I don't think that any scientific evidence could ever support or disprove such a claim. The idea of a "brain in the wrong body" is fundamentally metaphysical and falls outside a scientific approach to evidence. This isn’t to say that science is the only source of knowledge, but typically, we only label a biological aspect of ourselves as 'wrong' when the medical field classifies it as pathological, even if we do find neural correlates. I’m not suggesting that we can not learn from research, or any underlying phenomenon is merely a social construct, but rather, interpreting any brain data as evidence of a brain being in the wrong body is purely a matter of interpretation and falls outside the realm of science. Such a statement only holds water if you adopt a dualistic view of mind/brain and body. If you don't, like in scientific contexts, there’s no meaningful experiment that could demonstrate whether a brain is ‘matched’ with its body. Any brain just *is* its body.

Another excellent discussion. I am a British (PoC ex-religious gay) lawyer that now lives in the US, and on the point about resolving/acknowledging a genuine conflict of rights, I have been wondering what makes the US discourse so polarized and toxic, especially comapred the UK. Of course there a so many cultural/social/historical factors, and the UK has its own toxicity, but I have become more persuaded that this difference has been due to the failure of a particularly American/Dworkinian (Ronald not Andrea) approach to rights. In the US "Rights are Trumps", and Dworkin who coined this believed that in law and morality, everyone is an objectivist i.e. there can only be "one right answer" regarding the content of rights and judgments of law, and while what that answer is thought to be may be misinterpreted at any given point in history, it is the role of the judge to collate all legal, moral, social knowledge to figure out what *the* right answer is regarding a right's content/definition. In Dworkin's view rights never clash, perceived conflicts are simply due to 'misinterpretations', and when understood properly, rights necessarily all fit together in a harmonious whole. Such a stance transforms judges into quasi-divine figures, arbiters with ultimate wisdom on rights. This necessitates ideological purity, when combined with America's almost sacred regard for its Constitution and the supremacy of its judiciary, elevates legal disputes to existential battles where one side must unequivocally prevail. It becomes impossible to even conceptualise the possibility that rights may conflict, and when a conflict arises one must trump/'win' out over the other. Rights adjudication is not based on factual realities, concrete disputes, and balancing interests, but rather in expounding abstract ideals of what the content of a right contains - aka rights 'categoricalism'. So in a case for instance where it is Gay vs Religious folk (e.g. gay cakemaker or wedding planner cases) the stakes are so high/toxic/ideological for one class as a whole to win over the other to define the right in your favour, and for the other to lose and be excluded. The model of rights in the UK is very different, and is based in 'proportionality', Unlike categoricalism, proportionality honestly accepts and acknowledges from the outset that all rights inevitably conflict, and focusses on resolving the specific dispute in front of it. What a judge must then do is look at the very specific facts of any individual dispute to see (in that exact context/instance) if an infringement of one right is justified by the other. So in gay v religion cases, the court hyper-focusses on the exact facts of the dispute to balance the adjudication of the infringements, without having to define in an abstract/theoretical/ideal sense what the right *is* for *all* future cases. It does not seek to form an abstract ideal formulation/ranking or describe the fundamental nature of a certain freedom, indeed it accepts that a purely legal conception could never do that (that's not to say there isn't lofty rhetoric in the supreme court). The factual analysis/judgment of the specific dispute does not require prejudging the same outcome if the same conflict of rights arises, but under different facts. The judgment is written as an honest explanation of what facts led to the judge to balance the rights coming out one way or another. Whereas in categoricalism, the facts of the case, reality, (even medical/scientific reality) are irrelevant/secondary to explaining the ideal legal conception of rights - this leads to a lot of purely ideological 'impact' cases devoid of factual content/disputes. And in the US with judicial supremacy, cases to strike down laws on their face, without having to argue based on proving actual harms. See the 303 Creative case - where a christian brought a case to the US SC about making a gay wedding website, where there was no gay couple and the dispute was purely theoretical, but the court decided in the abstract that cakemaking is necessarily 'expressive speech' and is guaranteed protection by freedom of religion, as opposed to conducting a factual analysis (there were no 'facts') of whether in that specific dispute, denying a service was due to discrimination. In a similar Northern Ireland case (Ashers Baking Company), a christian cake maker was allowed to deny making a cake with gay writing/icing requested by straight activists; but in basing the judgment in the specific facts, the court left open the possibility of finding discrimination in the future if refusing to bake a certain cake was because a customer is gay. Proportionality is the opposite of a "winner takes all"/trumps approach to rights, and keeps individual parties engaged with the process with a possibility of winning in the future. It also reduces the stakes of litigants/advocates by negating the need to win via imposing their ideal of what perfect rights ideology entails, which requires capturing institutions and judiciaries for it to be effected, and to trump an opposing vision. Th UK approach also focusses energy in political accountability when combined with the fact there is no written constitution to get hung up on (due to textualist fundamentalism) and ultimately Parliament is sovereign over the judiciary. What this results in is an understanding that what a right entails is also largely a political question, requiring engagement of society as a whole to navigate, and where the entire complexity can be taken into account (including social/ethical/scientific/medical experience) without having to always be reduced to the ideological/individualistic/legalistic/adversarial approach of litigation. (This is also difficult in the US given the gridlocked nature of Congress, and formalistic approach to separation of powers; which precludes judicial review of healthcare, and where rights can only be vindicated through the Supreme Court). I'm not saying that the US should be like the UK, the differences make sense given the religious culture of the US since it's inception/puritans and the central role it plays. Now where Canada fits into this a bit more complex, nominally there is parliamentary sovereignty and proportionality, yet judges in Canada do play an outsized role in determining ethical/political disputes, retaining elements of the Dworkinian view, and with rights ideology being directly transplanted from Blue-State America (without any similar conservative counterweight). There seems to be a kind of legal/political-cognitive dissonance where it retains the symbolic complexity of the British mode of unwritten/political constitutionalism, but with the rights/textual fundamentalism/formalism of American constitutional legal rights thinking. That was a biiiit longer than I expected lol. If anyone does read this essay, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Woahhhh this been deep diving gender for months and only really got into autogynephilia this last week watching Blanchard's, Bailey's and Lawrence's interview on Wider Lense. Since wacthing Sacha and Stella I have come almost convinced that if I had been a child in our time I might have put in the medical transition pipeline and I consider myself super "lucky"" Younger i always picture myself as a girl, thinking being female seemed much better, playing female roles while I played with my brother, etc. As a teen I reasearched sexuality and tought girls seemed to have it better. I am definitly heterosexual and never had any "auto-sexual" experiences but I think i might be realising that my rromantic relations with women might be a way to project myself in their place.... Anyhow, I have alwasy said that the determining factor that made me want to be a man was the fact that I was attracted by feminine women who are attracted by masculine men and it is only thair oponion that really matters about what gender I pass for. So when people say that the AGP classification is offensive because it makes sex the main factor in disphoria and gender identity instead of an inner more "profound" identity but I think that's really a naive take on the question. Obviously it's about sex !

I consulted gender care professions and they just acted like I was transphobic (I'm a bleeding heart liberal so I was shocked). I felt like screaming or crying as I knew there was something else going on with my son and the gender care told me to put my son on puberty blockers after our first session!! My heart breaks for anyone with these struggles especially when they feel so alone. But I implore (beg) gender care activists to realize the complexity of our psyches and rethink their aggressive and often detrimental approach. My son is still struggling with his identity, but he has said that he knows he's not a girl and never will be and that that would probably just stress him out more. We are working on his wholeness and feeling it's okay to feel feminine and emotional. I am so grateful for your bravery in sharing your story.

even if the patient is an adult why are surgeries and hormones a form of mental health treatment? we don’t give liposuction to anorexics. currently therapists and doctors are encouraging people’s delusions and slowly poisoning them with synthetic hormones, sometimes even leaving permanent physical damage because trans surgeries are high risk. transition should be the very last resort for anyone including adults. nobody says that a nose job or breast implants for a woman is a mental health treatment even though she obviously has body dysmorphia. also doctors should be direct with clients and tell them it’s impossible to change sex and you can only imitate the outer appearance of the other sex. socialization, biological structure, experiences, etc. will be different. also the reason you can’t ask questions during therapy is because the client might stop taking hormones and then the pharmaceutical industry will lose out on profit

I LOVE how you said there aren't any definable personality traits for gender dysphoria. I am naturally EXTREMELY feminine, yet I experience gender dysphoria as a natal female. I hate myself for that a lot, in part because it is so misunderstood and generalized in society that "trans men are masculine" and "trans women are feminine" but... thats DEFINITELY a really false generalization. I am glad that generalization seems to be fading.

Still waiting for Big Aaron or Little Aaron to contact me to hear from someone with no regrets unless Big and little Aaron are supportive of hateful trans ideology adult anti trans laws in the United States? Oh wait, like Jordan Peterson they are Canadian and don't have to live in the American Deep South. I am pretty sure the autogyne is a made up word not accepted within the medical community but a lot of Trump followers play that game with anti vax, conspiracy theories and believing their own pretend made up world. Anyway, contact me. You know my info and have ignored it.

Mastectomy for cancer can involve lymph node disection which can cause problems with BP taking. You don't want to compress an arm that has poor lymphatic flow from lymph node removal.

You are so naive, Helen, "Terfs" do no care how individuals live their lives, but are protecting women and kids UNDER THE LAW. So, LANGUAGE is important in LAW! Your "live and let live" model is ridiculous. Genspect has been captured, and is now a Trans advocacy institution. You are conservative in your anti-women, anti-feminist stance, and we all know why some women, like you, do this. You want male approval. You are ambitious.

By now, Helen, you should have leaned the correct pronunciation of "Lyotard." To be honest, your focus on postmodernity is outdated, so you the missed the boat. All these debates happened in the 90's.
