Daq Hurghvo' nargh ("Out of Darkness") — CHRISTMAS CAROL in KLINGON
"Escape is such a thankful Word / I often in the Night
Consider it unto myself / No spectacle in sight
Escape - it is the Basket / In which the Heart is caught
When down some awful Battlement / The rest of Life is dropt-
'Tis not to sight the savior- / It is to be the saved-
And that is why I lay my Head
Upon this trusty Word-"
- Emily Dickinson (c. 1875)

"Je la momento, do, de la venko de Homo super Naturo, ni trovas la tutan homaron konkerita de iuj unuopaj homoj, kaj tiuj homoj konkeritaj de tio en ili mem, kio estas pure 'natura' - de siaj malraciaj impulsoj. Scattered are we who would build ever upward in pursuit of Heaven's light, among the chaos of words, signs and tongues. But it matters not: for tonight, we are all one great family circle. [EO] Disvastiĝintaj ni estas, kiuj konstruus ĉiam supren ĉasante Ĉielan lumon, inter la ĥaoso de vortoj, signoj kaj lingvoj. Sed tio ne gravas: ĉar hodiaŭnokte, ni ĉiuj estas unu granda rondo familia. [TP] mi...

A late autumn chill has begun to spread over the valley, from the grand Wasatch mountains in the east to the Great Salt Lake in the west. A love letter to the Lojban community, and a desperate prayer to save it from a slow and painful demise. In Lojban culture, to “xekce” (/'xɛk.ʃɛ/) is to derail an otherwise friendly conversation by starting a debate over someone else's grammar, style, or nonstandard usage. Shortened from “xekcedipasopa” (“XKCD-191”), the term was originally coined in reference to an early installment of the pop...

    what font are you using that includes ascenders and descenders?

    • @NoiseAndBells
      @NoiseAndBells Місяць тому

      Though few and far between, some default fonts have their Deseret script in the revised style with ascenders and descenders. (A vast improvement, if you ask me!) The font used in the video is Geneva, which contains a modern and somewhat unconventional sans serif Deseret; Baskerville has a decent set of ascender/descender Deseret glyphs with serifs as well, though I don't much care for the lowercase 𐑀 just being 𐐿 with overdot. Other than that, I believe there are a few custom fonts people have devised over the years, which you should be able to find with a web search. Good luck and 𐑊𐐫𐑍 𐑊𐐮𐑂 𐑄 𐑊𐐩𐐿!

    0:34 One thing I love about this line and the next is that "ma sewi" can be translated as heaven, but also as "sky". Therefore, the line can be used to mean both a promised but currently inaccessible relief ("Don't worry, when you die you'll go to heaven and get the best pie ever"), but also in a more malicious way that any kind of relief is impossible ("There's some pie up in the sky, if you can reach it it's gonna be the best pie ever"). This double meaning is only possible thanks to the unique way toki pona words are made.

      @@janmusi "frakha" and "jekhta" are conjugated in the first person singular present tense, which in this case entails merely dropping the final t from the infinitive. "sofosori" is a typo: it should read "sorfosori", from "sorfosor", meaning Earth.

    more dissecting time! vi lo srasu mi vreta ca ku vi: location; here lo srasu: the grass mi: me vreta: lie, like sleeping ca: right now?? ku: some terminator thing idk

      Right on! {ku} is a terminator for determiners (selma'o LE) as well as prepositions (selma'o PU and BAI). Lojban tenses (PU) are grammatically prepositions; here, the terminator {ku} allows the present tense {ca} to be displaced from its verb and placed at the end of the clause as an adverbial construction. {ca ku} can therefore be rendered as an adverbial phrase in English, such as "currently" or "right now".

    And to think that with its many guttural consonants, Klingon bears some similarities in overall sound to Hebrew or Arabic. The former is quite fitting for the season as well.

    having almost no knowledge of lojban, but a very bad understanding of it, i tried to decompose the first line: do mi sombo lo fusra je festi you (x1) | me (x2) | plants (gismu) | the rot/decay and (metaphor) waste (x3) | sombo is described as: (x1) sows/plants (x2) [crop/plants] at/in (x3) . so _do_ is the planter _mi_ gets planted _lo fusra_ and _je festi_ are where they get planted

    • @NoiseAndBells
      @NoiseAndBells 4 місяці тому

      Very close! {lo fusra je festi} is a single argument made from two predicates -- {fusra} "decay" and {festi} "waste" -- connected by the logical "and" operator, {je}. So, {lo fusra je festi} is "something which is both decay AND waste".
