Driving America's Highest Paved Road
Our first 14er!! Welcome back to the channel y'all! On today's episode we drive America's highest paved road and hike to the top of Mt Blue Sky (formerly Mt Evans).
Mt Blue Sky is located about 60 minutes outside of Denver Colorado and the scenic byway leads to a short trail that allows visitors to hike easily to the summit of a 14,000 foot peak.
This scenic byway requires a timed reservation permit if you want to park and hike on any of the area trails. These can be snagged about 30 days out and allow access to various parts of the area. For $15 we secured a permit to visit the summit area and lake areas. We took full advantage and spent the entire day exploring.
Now I know I know we didn't really "earn" that summit like we wanted too but I think this is an AMAZING way for anyone regardless of age or ability to experience the absolute magic of a 14,000 foot peak and this allowed our dream come true with no risk to Feeny's health. This may not be how I imagined conquering our first 14er but it was just as magical and the most amazing experience.
I hope you enjoyed coming along on our trip to Mt Blue Sky Scenic Byway.
We love and appreciate your subscription, likes, and kind comments. They mean the world to us!

Hello MIchele, from Ouray, Colorado. Thank you for this awesome video! St Elmo has always been a favorite of mine to visit! As a matter of fact, that Leadville/Buena Vista/Salida Upper Arkansas River Valley area is probably my second most visited part of Colorado, for me (or maybe tied for second as I do frequent the Crested Butte area a lot too). I tend to go over there in the late winter time frame as the eastern side of the valley is open from snow earlier (Buena Vista is touted as the Banana Belt of Colorado). I was in St Elmo this last December. Me and my dog, Remy, passed on through and snowshoed up Hancock Pass over to Pitkin, and then back.
Did you find the source of the smell yet?
@@michaelh2797 yeah sad story though…..the reason the marmot was so stubborn was it was a mom and there were babies I couldn’t see in the area where the crank shaft and skid plates connect. Broke my little heart but there was no way I could have known. The Subaru mechanic sure did get a surprise. He said it wasn’t his first which amazes me and saddens me 😭
@@MicheleShanklin yep, it is sad. My mom took her car to get an oil change once, and they found a kitten in the engine compartment.

Hi Michele. I think Colorado should use your videos for Colorado tourism ads and vlogs. Very well done and you cover the spots that are not on every other you tube video. Love these hidden gems you are finding. Thanks as always for the great content and your wonderful quirky personality. 😎. I was literally cracking up on your road review comment. I have a Subi too and it would drive me nuts too. lol
@@rossm7071 well that is just the kindest comment!! Thank you so much!! I don’t understand who does these road reviews 🤣 Passenger car friendly my you know what 🤣 Probably a Prius owner. Those things are everywhere!
@@MicheleShanklin That is hilarious. If you think the roads are bad there, you should see some of the desert roads. I wanted to buy land in Taos NM area but the area was unreachable unless you had a cyber truck or jeep. Ha. I don’t want to hurt my poor Subaru. Definitely eyeing a tear drop camper and your videos give me inspiration
Nice video. St Elmo is pretty cool and definitely worth the trip.
@@Denverdaytrippers thank you! Yeah it was a really great day!
That is quite the story about the Marmot. 3 days OMG. The worst that has happened to me and it happens every time I travel around the USA boon-docking is that I pick up mice every couple of weeks. As soon as I see mouse droppings I bait several mouse traps with peanut butter and they are usually caught by the next morning.
I now refer to it as Marmot Gate 2024 🤣 Honestly I’d rather the marmot in the car than the mice but that’s because I’m irrationally afraid of mice 🤣
@@MicheleShanklin They were not getting inside the cab of my F-150 where I was sleeping where I removed both the passenger front and rear seat and installed a 7 foot platform bed with 6" mattress. They were getting in the bed of the truck where I had my fridge, microwave, induction cooktop, and other gear. My camping in national forest, BLM, and campgrounds would have stopped if they were getting inside the cab. 🐭
I want that beautiful face in every view! ❤still loving the pup! Great video once again! Can’t wait till the next!
This one brings back memories. In the late 70’s, my dad and I drove to St. Elmo, and on up to Romney, Hancock, and over Tincup pass. I still have a picture on my wall of that building by the road. I was amazed it looked like it was suspended on the side of the hill, and it’s still there! I can’t wait to get back to CO in Sep.
That’s so cool! I’ve seen photos where the top portion of the mill was still intact and it literally looks suspended in air. I can’t imagine seeing that in person. They did some crazy feats back in the day. September is an amazing time in Colorado!! I hope you have a great trip!
It was fun seeing you let loose a little! Love you and the puppy's interactions. I am worried about you a little, you may get a little too popular when you are letting loose, lol!
Hahaha never a worry! I’ll still love and appreciate my OGs regardless!! It’s hard sometimes to capture them because dogs can’t reenact something so if I miss it….well I miss it. I got lucky this time to catch some of his crazy.
That's amazing! Reminds me of the Arizona towns like Tombstone. Thanks for sharing the adventure!
Yea! So much like Tombstone! Thanks for coming along!
Feens cracks me up with his rockhounding 😂😂😂
Good lord this kid! I worry for his teeth man but he will find a rock no matter what. Even on leash I’ll look down sometimes and ones just in his mouth 🤦🏻♀️
I was wondering why you didn't add solar, or have you found the 100 ah battery is sufficient between charges?
I can get about 5-7 days depending on outside temp out of my house battery. For me being solo I found I really enjoyed hip camps because I felt connected to people still. Those generally have power which for full time work on the road it is also just more convenient. I do have some solar panels so can recharge that way if needed but yeah it’s not sophisticated lol
Hi Michele and Feens! Looks yummy.....and in an awesome spot! Safe travels!

@@jlscielo thank you so much!! So glad it helped! I’m not great at these talking videos so it means a lot it helped!
believe it or not, a smaller trailer is much harder to back up than a larger trailer, they tend to react to your steering much faster than a bigger rig, much easier to jack knife
Actually I do believe that thanks to my dad. He taught me how to tow and back up and he tows a 30 footer. I was having problems and he said “let me try” so he could give me better advice and it took him a minute to figure mine out. The key is constant movement for mine. If you stop you’re screwed 🤣
Intense lol

@@jonathonholland9022 awww thank you so much!! More hikes and adventures to come!!
Question about internet. We have enjoyed small camper life in our tiny towable but internet connection is essential for work. I need video for work. We have been using AT&T phone lines. I know lots of people are using Star Link. But it feels like a large investment for maybe six months of on the road nomad life.
@@shirleymatthews6692 I use my TMobile Home Internet Router as the main source and have AT&T and TMobile hotspots if needed. I host a large amount of video calls and rarely have challenges. It does depend on what coast you are on. TMobile IMO is the best for west coast. Most cities have full 5G.
Thanks! Helpful. Tiny Towable life is so much fun but it’s not free so figuring how to make a living while doing it makes it possible.
