Since getting this Mark 2 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol, I've noticed that the engine takes a very long time to warm up, particularly in cold weather, and also fluctuates a lot while driving. I suspect that the thermostat is stuck open, meaning that coolant is always flowing through the radiator and causing the car to take longer to get to temperature. In this video I set out to change the thermostat o...

Does the DPF needs to be fully cleaned also ?
@@victorhugo-hf5pz This is a petrol engine so doesn't have a DPF
Do the front tweeters still work ?
@@c.s185channel9 Yes, mine are both still working
Had mk1 1.6 petrol about 9 years and made 100k km with it, after that i had mk2.5 1.6 petrol 2 years and did 40k km and now i have mk2 1.6 ti-vct with 270k km and runs like new
I replaced my thermostat because it was stuck open. After replacement it's better but the temp wouldn't go to 90. It's 3mm before 90°mark, little bit before stock. What's to check ?
I think that's pretty normal. Mine sits at the same point.
@RobGMyMX5 what happens in your car when you turn heating on max and blower on 4 ? Does engine temperature drop significantly?
@@MartinTeerly No. On mine it gets up to temperature in about 10-15 minutes of driving, and then stays there solidly. Even with heating on at any speed. Before I changed my thermostat, it took much longer to get up to temperature, and it would fluctuate up and down depending on driving speed, external temperature, and heater settings.
Hey Rob does the bluetooth signal keep on in your car even though the radio is not turned on? I got a similar cable and it keeps on forever
So how do I set the base idle to match it to? Whenever I set it to 900rpm before plugging it in it goes up to 1500 when I bridge it, and when I adjust it down again they match perfectly at like 700 but I don’t want it to idle that low?
Thank you very much for apload this Video. I have the same Car ( same colour!) and want to change the Thermostat...Have a nice Day from Grecce 🇬🇷
I love my Focus 2007 gasoline 1.6, 150.000 km up to this moment, I absolutely have no reason to buy a new car. Just a regular minimal maintenance and that is it. Thank you Ford, perfect car! No rust, garage all the time.
Hi mate im about to buy the automatic mk2 for a first car 😄
powershift is not a good option mate, read about it before buying
@igordugonjic no its the 4 speed auto 🙂
@@igordugonjic im still debating after today as ive seen the kia seed auto 1.6
iv tweaked this car up to 150hp beast
Another You Tuber has used electrical contact cleaner. He said that throttle body cleaner is designed for cleaning metal and the Focus has plastic..... Any thoughts from anybody on this?
I had the mk2 1,6 100hp focus and ended up selling it mainly becuse of the excessive fuel consumption and poor performance. Also the combination of heavy weight and firm suspension wasnt pleasant at all.
Interesting, I get pretty good consumption on mine, normally about 39mpg - I think that's quite reasonable for the age
nice job!

Where is the thermostat location on the 1.6 Z6 motor
Did you disconnect the car battery before you did the work? I have the same issue but only one speaker working thanks
@@kimmcneil5710 I didn't initially, but I noticed that I was getting some sparks when I accidentally touched the speaker wires to the body, so I then disconnected the battery to avoid damaging the amp
Good way to check if the thermostat works is to boil some water in a kettle snd put the thermostat in it, in a cup of course.
I had to do mine. When i drove on the motorway temp would drop to the quarter mark. Luckily it was stuck open and not shut. Wish i saw rhis video before i done mine because i had to go under rhe car to get the bottom bolts off.
Engine bay is spotless .
Thanks. I need to do this on mine. Can anyone tell me is there a gasket or just that plastic thing he showed us in the video?
Great video i didn't have a clue how to do it and where it was thank you so much.
Focus Mk2 looks were as dull as ditchwater. 2.5 was better but neither matched the MK1 which, in my view, still looks great. I had one for a few years and loved it, even with the ‘plastic fantastic’ interior.
@@agaafear Each to their own I guess 😊 The mk2 was definitely more conservative, but personally I prefer it now. But there's no doubt the mk1 was a masterful design. And they're both fantastic cars overall.

I own a 2010 Ford Focus MK2, and I’m experiencing issues with the speakers. Currently, only the rear driver-side speaker and the front right tweeter are working. I’ve checked the wiring, and everything seems to be intact. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?
This was the same issue I had. Never managed to get to the bottom of exactly why they stopped working. The speakers look fine, but just don't make any sound. My hypothesis is that the coils go bad inside the speakers due to moisture over the years. Swapping them out with new drivers like in my video has worked perfectly.
You are awesome. Thanks!
The clutch does bite high mines a duel mass flywheel and I had it done last November and it’s still bites high

I’ve got a 2007 57 plate 20l petrol ghia had it 12 years brilliant car and quite quick done 104 000 love the car
I own a 1.4 2007 and a 1.6 zetec estate and are great cars.Have to keep an eye on sills for corrosion and use a suitable treatment.Regular oil changes are the secret to keeping them going.
Well, I have 2 sitting in my driveway, a '96 Chico 1.3 and a '07 Chico 1.4, and I wouldn't trade them for anything else. Both cars are still going strong (my '96 has over 400 000 km's on the odometer), maintenance is cheap and fairly easy and most repairs can be done over a weekend and with a few cold beers. Any modern equivalent car simply lacks the Citi Golf's character and charm, and - sadly - nothing that VW builds nowadays is anywhere near as reliable.
Long may they last!
Im having a rough cold start idle too. Seems very common on the 1.6 petrol engine
Yes I think so. Mine is the opposite actually - smooth idle on first start but lumpy when up to temp. But I've stopped trying to find the cause now and have just accepted it's a quirk of the car. It runs perfectly other than that.
Really good video, just bought a 2018 mk1 petrol and intend to do own servicing. Do you have a link for the service reset dongle, i understand there are a lot of fake ones that wont work.
Glad the video was helpful 😊 Yes, you're correct, you need an OBD2 reader with a specific chip in it. Specifically, you will need an ELM327 Bluetooth reader V1.5, with the PIC18F25k80 chip. I made a how-to guide for resetting the service light, which has all the details you'll need: docs.google.com/document/d/1y9iLTUiTzP9no0Kjtzj1AflVg2NsCkzXug2KOzTQGn8
Please can you mention what tools and size used to remove the screws
Sorry for the slow reply. I'm afraid I didn't note the exact size, but it was a standard size torx head - if you have a set of screwdrivers with the usual torx sizes, one of them should fit right
Never lose your great English accent
I’m not a huge fan of the pre-facelift’s interior, as the blue makes it feel a bit Citroën or Fiat-like to me, but I think the facelift had a great interior to go with its stunning looks. I drive a 2011 1.6 TDCi a few weeks ago and was amazed at how rapid it was compared to a Golf 1.6 TDI. However, that particular car let itself down as being the Sport model, it had the fancy enhanced radio, the wiring on which was buggered so that every time it cut out, the engine lights momentarily came on. And the sat nav moved on its own, so it was telling me what to do when I get off the motorway just as I was getting on it. It was still a hell of a lot more fun than the Mk3 1.6 petrol I drove a few weeks later. That was just gutless and boring.
Still need to try a TDCi, but the low down torque from a common rail diesel definitely makes it pretty nippy in urban environments
Thanks you very much. However my 2 door bolts were 8 not 10 XD
Huh, that's very random!
We're did you get the trim level spec pictures
I downloaded a copy of the brochure. You can find it pretty easily with a google search
if you have ramps or jack the car up high enough to get under it...hug the bell housing, get long angled needle nose pliers & it's a lot easier than trying this from the top
@@lasvegascrisis good tip, thanks
my idles too low and sometimes cuts out on idle or coasting as you said, i’ll give this a go!
Hi Rob I don’t suppose you know where to find the EGR valve on that model of focus?
Hey! Not a job I've done myself - there is no EGR on the1.6 petrol, only the diesel engines. But you should be able to find it at the back of the engine, it's fairly accessible but you need a special Clic-R clip release tool for the clamp on the pipework to the left of the valve.
I've got an MX5 too and looking for a cheap daily which is still fun. You might have solved my problem!
Yeah the MX5 has spoiled me - since I got it almost every other car is disappointing to drive! But surprisingly this Focus still manages to put a smile on my face, so I can definitely recommend it. The only thing to note is, as with any old car, things will need working on from time to time. But most jobs have been pretty easy so far. Fingers crossed!
Fab thank you! Just cleaned mine and stopped it cutting out 😊 Combined with 2CarPros video below to remove throttle. Both have excellent points to complete the job and prevent issues. ua-cam.com/video/20-Dyq3fmNA/v-deo.htmlsi=gD7lRqMmD6iX9Y9I
Just bought the st3 version of this pre facelift car, epic to drive!
Is the bass better or worse than stock speakers, the stock sony speakers are decent
@@FocusRS500 There is no difference at all in bass between the stock speakers and those aftermarket ones. They sound completely identical when listening
It looks like you got green LEDs for the HVAC and ashtray, but how about the dashboard itself? Since the MX5 has a natural green tint across the face so was that what it looks like with white LEDs coming through the green face or green LEDs going through the green face? Thanks for the great video detailing everything though, especially the exact bulb types. Those were always difficult to get a consensus online for. I'll be doing the same setup probably except maybe a white in the cupholder (replaces the ashtray) instead.
@@RetroQGaming I went with green LEDs for everything because I didn't want the slightly faded yellow-green tint that the filter behind the dashboard provides - I wanted a nice crisp green all round. The only downside is that the red parts of the clocks (e.g. rev limit) look grey in the green light.
It's diesel or petrol?
@@Salmanazam123 As mentioned in the thumbnail and in the video it's petrol
great video, will do my own research on the engine oil, i have heard and think you also did, that it’s ok to use the same oil for gearbox and diff? i’ve watched this in bed at 7am so probably missed it but what sockets/torx bits did you need for the whole thing? appreciate the video is years old so not expecting a reply but this vid is saved to my service playlist and will be referred to when i figure out how to get my mx5 jacked up! liked and subscribed
@@kach0937 Actually I made a bit of a mistake regarding the gearbox / diff oil. They use the same grade of oil, but the Redline MT90 is not the same as Redline 75w90. The MT90 is specifically designed for transmissions and has friction modifiers to help engage the synchros. If used in a diff this causes extra drag. So I actually changed the diff oil again later to Redline 75w90. Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact socket / bit sizes, but if you have a regular tool set with a range of sockets, and a set of Philips screwdrivers I think you'll be fine. I don't believe there are any torx screws on the MX5 from what I can remember.
@@RobGMyMX5 Amazing, thanks for the reply - I've figured out that a £50 socket kit from Halfords should have everything I need, I think I'm going to risk using the same 75W-90 GL4 oil in both the diff + gearbox
@@kach0937 Yeah any 75w90 oil will be fine in both, that is the manufacturer's specifications anyway.
