  • Great Wheel Spindle Mounts: Anatomy & Physiology 101
This turned into Video Day, so I decided to drag out some Great Wheel spindle mounts and review them. I also cover male & female upright mounts & spindle types, plus give some tips ranging from making your own washers to spinning direct drive on an accelerator. This topic of great wheel spindle mounts is one that I am CONSTANTLY addressing in support, so I am glad to have finally been spurred into doing this.
From left to right on the first picture here:
    - Mother-of-All and maidens (or sisters) -- direct drive; use leather strips or cornhusks; can be mounted through the holes (as I show) or tied on if there are no holes; this one requires a post or a male upright; uses a direct drive spindle
    - Bat's Head -- direct drive; same bearings as MOA ^^^ but make them a bit bigger in the loops to keep the spindle from dragging in the concavity of the Bat's Head; this one requires a female mount; uses a direct drive spindle
    - Barrel? -- I am unsure if this is real: I think it came with a wheel! Anyway, same as Bat's Head for mounts; this one requires a post or a male upright; uses a direct drive spindle
    - accelerator -- accelerated and/or direct drive (I explain how); effectively doubles the spindle speed in accelerator mode; this one requires a female upright; uses an accelerator spindle.
THIS IS NOT A "MINOR"S HEAD" UNLESS IT WAS MADE BY AMOS MINOR!!! There were lots and lots of accelerator makers in the 1800s. :)
