Приєднався 2 вер 2006
Steve Pendlebury. is an Engineer who repairs vintage stuff despite only having one working arm due to a stroke. He knows a lot and can teach others a few tricks of the trade due to having gained years in the business including working for the BBC Transmitter Department before it was sold off! There are things that he does differently as a result though.....

This is a small 8 Transistor Radio made in Japan for the American Msrket. These sets are either easy to fix or absolute mind benders.... Many of these small pocket sets are. On top of that people like to twiddle inside them.....

I was given this - so I had to get it working! The Little Meastro name went on many sets so watch out. And the circuit I got was wrong. Just wish there was more on MW and LW. This is an American design that was adapted for the English Market.

NOTE: I will be in Ohio when you read this! Tte Repairs will continue in a Month's Time! Sometimes a set can be a problem because you have stared at it too long and started making errors as a result. Andy at Vintage Electronics Repair got to this stage and we have all done it even me! So it came here and in the end I sorted it. I do wonder how many of these non-VHF sets will be of use in years ...

The Beginning of this vanished into the ether and was not seen again - but the rest survived. This had a short circuit on the Battery Terninals so it was not working and would have flattened batteries very fast! A few other faults here and an upgrade to take modern batteries. This was also sold as a Riga 103.
Unitra ZK140 - Sort of a Grundig

Переглядів 3164 місяці тому
The Telefunken 76 and similar tape recorders are great when they work but something like a belt change can be a hassle! Maybe the next one I do will be quicker but this one took time. Someone had tried to use it as a 2 head mancine by using the erase head as a playback head.... Tried being the word that counts!

Robuk that had been courierd rather badly!
Do these models have a problem with the volume controls failing? I have a 200 model where the volume causes a lot of distorted noise when operating and have just bought a 400 that is listed as having a volume control problem. I am hoping that some contact cleaner will fix the problem
@@8mm2digital I would change a few capacitors first - three is one on the ECL82 which needs to be swapped as a matter of course - it stops DC from the Triode section getting onto the grid of the output pentode. Usually it is on the Anode of the Triode section of the valve. Change this first …..
The valve may be an ECL86…..
@@Steveuk405 Thank you for your reply. I tried the contact cleaner on the audio volume controller on the 200 machine and it fixed the problem and there is no distortion or noise as it rotates now. When the four track arrives I will have someone take a look at it and carry out your suggestions. Many thanks. Andrew
Was there ever a part 2. I’ve got a similar problem with a DN-C635 - also for a radio station 😮.
@@renowden2010 I don’t think there was but I know the problem well. There is a small loading belt underneath the CS tray - open the thing halfway by cutting the mains and you will see it. Just change that belt ….
@@Steveuk405 thanks. I have done that, greased the runners & gear and now it works perfectly.
Wow! Hpw mych are these worth?
It varies - depends on a lot of factors - colour of case … but here in there are few stations on AM…..
@@Steveuk405 I see, I'm pretty sure I found the exact one or very similar, same colour too in my pop's storage. Looks like all the components are intact too
Need to start work on my friends Robuk Steve, it's the same machine.

These seem to be getting collectible…..
those knobs break very easily, i have a pilot mains/battery attache portable that uses them as well
Plastic getting old ?
@@Steveuk405 likely, but i think it was a fairly brittle type from new, anyway
hehe, those awful hunts caps, as someone on the net called them " 'orrid 'unts " ...they'd probably last better if the casing didnt crack...
@@andygozzo72 I call them something I can’t put on here ….
@@Steveuk405 hehe, i have actually come across some good ones, even a few 'new old stock' ones, but once they've cracked, if they're in high voltage situations, they need replacing, and even uncracked low value ones, a few nF seem to go even lower, or open!
hmm ,yes, i'm one of the ones that say never plug old stuff straight in, without some form of current limiter,... with some of the things i've come across, very good idea i didnt... as you've seen the ac only models of these still have live chassis, the transformer only feeds the heaters, some series heater, some versions parallel, they and bush did similar, you have to watch out for that! i also have a fairly uncommon, even 'rare' version, just pre war, that has a blue rexine covered case, with carrying handle
Views are varied on this…. But I have not had anything blow up yet ! I will tend to look at the set first - and the state of the mains lead.
@@Steveuk405 yep thats the main thing, you dont know what state the wiring is like, maybe rotted, extra lengths twisted on, even valves in wrong sockets which could be disastrous, i've seen radios for sale at auctions that have had the valve sockets filled witj PL36 line output valves, just so they can say 'all valves present' ...
i have one of those, plus the 2 knob version ;-) , plus the just post war wood case model, and a late 50s/early 60s model with the U x8x valves, and an uncommon, maybe 'rare' rexine covered wood case model with carry handle, just pre war, acdc type with 'line cord dropper'
I have one of those too…. Nice sets !
@@Steveuk405 the rexine one?
hi steve great video and repair sir.
Glad you enjoyed it. Wish there was more on MW and LW ....!
Hi Steve, nice little radio.
By the way, thank you for searching for the EKCO A172 manual. Much appreciated 😊
Always learning something new. Thank's Steve 😊
Hi Steve and welcome back.
How are things Harvey ? Good tape recorder or two on the go ?
Hi Steve, I have enough to be getting on with at the moment, lol.
focus .. focus ..
I will…..
i've had instability problems if you just cut the screen on the AF11x things,, the small can AF12x type are 'supposedly' less likely to tin whisker but i have had one do it, so far....the OC170 and 171 are VHF capable types, used in early sw and fm capable transistor sets before the AF114, 115 and 116 were made ..i have a few ASZ20s which are 'similar' but specified for 'fast switching', they may not be linear enough for radio use
The problem I had was that it is relatively easy to make but not as easy to make them oscillate …..
Fine Work Steve Sent Andy New Russian GT322B Transistors But Dont Know If He Got Them To Work in The Set They Worked in My RP25 And RP18 Sets Regards mike.
They often amplify - they did in this - but did not seem to Oscillate right ….
Hiya mate glad you got it sorted it didn’t work when I got it that was why I changed the AF117’s and that IF core was like that when I tried to adjust it it did the same thing as it as it did on you but I got it back up but but I think the piece of elastic had rotted catch up with you later my friend
I know - I put a bit of cotton in……,
Russian Radios were so well built.Thinking of my Late Fathers old Rigonda Radio Gram.
They were superbly built those. I had one recently in for repair ….. !
Nice radio Steve, Russian women are nice too, lol.
I would not know that and is there something I don’t know ….
Lol.
😊, i think i sold you this one!😉
Yes you did ! What are the problems with the other sets you mentioned ?

Yes - Rare make ….
I haven't opened mine yet, the buttons on the left and right (the end buttons) are stuck down. I'm wondering if they are unused buttons?
Yes they are ! For show…..

I have the same set in a period cabinet with doors, the chassis is an A3348 circa 1947/8.
That sounds nice ….
That is a beautiful radio. Look heavy.
It is heavy but very well made ….
Working first power up. No modern set would do that in 70 or so years time. Just lost yet another medium wave transmitter in my area the Radio 4 London rely on 720 khz.
In the state this was in it still worked ! Stuff made now would be in Landfill in 10 years. So a tip - put some of today’s stuff away and wait for them to want it in 20 years!
hi ya steve my gran had one of these ( i think remembering ) on top of a large cabinate but didn't work 1978😄

Hello sir, Let me tell you have to have a great Radio repair channel. Cut out half of the bla bla bla bull shit!. People really don't want to listen to you rattle on and on about this and that ! It was very much appreciated while you did this great job with a single hand. Really great job !!!.
Every video I've watched on UA-cam seems to not give an explanation of how to remove the chassis frame the cabinet. I undone all the screws on that look like they should release it, and it still feels tightly stuck. Any help appreciated
In most sets it is 4 screws underheath the chassis and 2 on the imside. In this care it is the knobs as wel; but in others the set comes out apart from the speaker ... American sets the whole set comes out . But thanks for the heads up on thst.
