Our UA-cam channel is a way to journal our knowledge and the growth of our gardens. Putting yourself out there for the possibility of judgement, can be very scary, however, having the courage to be vulnerable is the only way we can grow as people and gardeners.
Our property is 3.5 acres, with 3,000 sq feet designated to gardening space and over 5,000 sq feet being used to create a food forest and mini orchard.
A new flock of chickens will be joining us in the early spring to help us move closer to being more self sufficient!

That's picked cabbage, not sauerkraut. Sauerkraut is fermented and makes it's on lactic acid (not vinegar)
No way you're mortgage Lifters is correct. They should be large pink, red with green seed jell cavities. They are absolutely delicious. I've had these every year for over a decade, and everyone that had tried one loved it.
Hi friend I would appreciate it if you can help me to get some of the seeds of the onions. I really don't know where I buy some I live in Florida and I can't find it here can you please tell me. where I live.
Hello! I was given mine as a gift a few years ago. Keep an eye open for someone selling them on facebook marketplace in May/June. You might also look at etsy for a reliable seller.
You had a very nice harvest this year. really good video thanks for sharing these Sherry.
@@OurCabinInThewoods thank you my friend
Put bottom on top 😂
Very comprehensive video on how to dehydrate eggs! I've seen temps from 125 to 145 recommended....I think I'll use your 135...nice and in the middle. We don't have chickens so I am going to be checking for sales and get to dehydrating as soon as possible! Thanks so much for a great tutorial! God Bless!
Thank you! You definitely need to get chickens so that you always have eggs on hand to preserve!
LMAO. "My onions didn't grow when I planted them on the east side of my asparagus plants because they blocked the sun. So I planted my onions on the west side of my asparagus...that didn't work either so I started bending my asparagus plants down".
😅🤣😂
Such lovelies ladies
There is no point asking if they are hardy. If they can survive a Canadian winter they must be tough!
You must be a Canadian who has experienced our weather and survived winter 😁
@@GardeningintheNorth No, I am from the UK but a workmate of my Dad emigrated to Canada thirty years ago and the depth of snow on his winter pictures was unbelievable. I instantly stopped complaining about snow in this country.
@@richardwaring8613 🤣😅😂
Ty nice from new zealand
You're welcome! I hope you enjoyed the video.
Can you substitute any other vinegar for malt vinegar ex balsamic or ACV TIA
Hello! Yes, you could totally try another vinegar. Let me know which one you like best!
@ Thank you so much!
Thats a lot of squash off one trellis. About how many pounds of squash did you get off that (4'?) trellis this growing season?
The arch trellis is 4ft wide and the arch is about 12ft of growing space. I ended up planting 3 plants on either side because I had a few extra. I didn't weigh them this year.... I wish I had. The last time I grew these, it was well over 100 pounds per trellis.
Trobicino/ zuchino rampicante is usually eaten green like a zucchini. I would probably leave it on like you do for storage, but that's not the norm. Some report the mature ones store a year (unprocessed) at room temperature
Definitely leave them on! The squash is more like a Butternut squash and keeps longer. I made so much soup for the freezer. Yum!
Oh my goodness, Sherry!!!! It's like an August harvest!!! You're swimming in peppers lol. Everything is BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you 🙂 I brought in the rest of the squash, rosemary, and mint. I have to get to the lemon grass. I've been putting it off because it makes me itchy. Our Canadian weather is so weird... one day, I'm in a winter hat, and today, I'm outside playing pickleball in shorts and tomorrow I will pull out the snow pants 🤣
@GardeningintheNorth lol the weather is a little wonky!! It's giving 17degrees here tmr, with a low of 2 degrees tmr night! Chance of snow!
Just float the eggs I a large bowl if they float there bad if they sink there good
@@AngelaBragwell Yes, this works great. We do this before washing and selling.
What a beautiful fall harvest!!! Your garden is beautiful!
Thank you 🙂
Awesome harvest especially in late October. Our garden was very good to us this year also. We, hubby lol planted 450 garlic a few weeks ago. We will have lots of scapes in the spring early summer. Always a pleasure to watch your videos.❤😊
Thank you! That's a lot of garlic! Start thinking about how you will use it.
🤗🇦🇷💪🏻🙌🏻💚
Hi by using a hot water bath, does that kill off the probiotics in sauerkraut ????
Hello! Yes, as does using the sauerkraut in any meals where you are now cooking with it in recipes. Fermentation alone will provide you with more beneficial benefits.
Do you cut the green tops off before winter? I planted mine as soon as i got them. The are huge, first year growing. No bulbets yet. Seller said ill see thwm next year. I can cover then with bedding h mulch to protect them before winter gets here.
Hello! No, I do not cut the green tops off. I never have. I just walk away at the end of the season. This year, because the bed they are in is new, I am going to add leaves to the bed. Leaves are free and add so many great nutrients to the soil.
@@GardeningintheNorth Thank you for your reply. I have added leaves to the area they are planted in. I can't wait to get bulbettes and plant them in a new spot that doesn't take up prime garden space.
can you use caraway seeds in this one?
Hello, I think it depends on the flavour you like. If you do, you should add caraway seeds to sauerkraut before fermentation so the seeds can release and impart more flavor throughout the sauerkraut as it ferments.
thank you for helping me @@GardeningintheNorth
This was a good video. I see you are using a vita mix. I have 2 different blender containers, one for dry blending. Is that what you are using for the dehydrated eggs? I too have a vita mix which is why I'm asking. Thank you for being clear.😊
Hello! Yes, it's a vita mix. I love it. I only have one container, but now that I think about it, I only use my vita mix for dry ingredients. Specifically, my herbs and spices.
My chicks have been roosting for a week and they are only 3 weeks old
That's awesome! Sometimes you get smartie pants. This summer we bought ready to lay hens. They were 20-24 weeks old and we struggled to get them to roost... dummies were not even going inside the coop. My hubby was going out and every night to put them to bed... took over a week, lol
The bulblets on top of the plant actually are incredibly tough and I have kept them in an open basket dry , without soil, outside in the winter, for many months. When planted they grew well. I'm not sure who told you they need to be planted freshly picked or they won't live, but this is completely incorrect. I would compare their toughness to comfrey roots or bearded iris corms.
Thank you for sharing your experience with storing them and planting them. They definitely are tough. Prior to making that video, I tried to store those, and they didn't do well for planting. They are definitely one of my favorites!
yours look very healthy. the one i had outdoors that survived (i planted more but they all went 404, other than the ones I have indoors which died for a bit without ever having flowered and seem to have become undead (same as their adoptive «potato onion» siblings which I grew from seed, again indoors)... figure that one out. and all without adding any sort of fertilizer) got overtaken by my lawn, grew a relatively slender flower stem, and threw off such tiny bulbils, which I took inside not really knowing what to do, about a month ago i think. should i pot them up indoors and wait for the weather to improve (it is now autumn here in Prince George, BC and we've had a couple of frosts)? (if only this would be struck out: how do you treat your soil? I suppose compost, perhaps a low dose of a fertilizer? none of that I do because I'm awkward, but by golly I should start.) you said you do nothing, and I believe you. mulching even? i supose that counts? I might end up making a quick video on the topic in Esperanto (my second language (that's stuck, anyway) and latest special interest after flunking gardening).
Hello! I honestly do not baby these or follow any of the normal rules for gardening. I recently planted the little bulbs knowing that they wouldn't have a lot of time to grow and mature, BUT I got fresh green onions, so it's a win! I do use wood chips in my garden, but haven't added any to the new garden. I've never started them inside. Keep trying!
This is so different from the fermenting process I've done before canning. How is the taste compare to fermenting prior?
Hello! In my opinion, fermenting prior has more flavour. But with our big move last year, I haven't done either for well over 2 years 😭
Allium × proliferum
These are Egyptian walking onions. Can be used as a green onion or the bulb can be used.
@@GardeningintheNorth Thank You very much👍,greeting for You 🍀💚
Thank You ! God Bless 😎🙂
You’re welcome! 🙏
. Could you use them in a salsa
Yes! You definitely could use the bulbs for salsa. They have a stronger taste so keep this in mind.
I was told to soak seeds overnight first.
I've never tried that before with these, but I'm sure it would help!
My 8 year old loves helping me with my food mill too. 😊
I love it
Do you think balsamic vinegar would taste good as a brine for these?
Hello! Yes, it would. Keep in mind that it can be stronger than the apple or white vinegar
Cute!
Do they Walk like an Egyptian? 🤣
@@JoRoBoYo yes 🤣😅
I really loved your video. I wish I had known about this process when I had my chickens. am a carnivore and love eggs. We may be going through a food shortage (I hope not) so I want to be prepared.
Thank you so much 🙂
I also hope not, but it's better to be prepared!
Looking good Sherry
Do you use the dehydrated lemons in your tea? Enquiring minds want to know 😂 What else do you use them for Sherry?
Yes! I also make and sell at Christmas time, Simmer Pot Bags that I use them in. 😀
Great info
Ok cool
OMG i just found this cool.
Thank you my friend
New to processing tomatoes. I knew about lemon juice but what about salt?
Hello! I don't add any spices until I use the sauce. Then I can add what I want for taste.
@@GardeningintheNorth thank you!
I have above ground beds because I am disabled and if I get down on the ground I can’t get up on my own with these bum legs , I am wanting these type of onions so I don’t have to buy starts as my income has dropped drastically. Thank you so much for this information
These would be perfect for you! They will do great in a raised bed and constantly give you onions you can use!
Is this the Calendula that you use for your tea?
Yes! All harvested from my garden. So many uses!
@@GardeningintheNorth that's awesome Sherry! Love it! ❤️
You were roasting peppers and onions what did you do with them did you add them to the sauce
Hello! Yes, everything was added. So yummy 😋
How do you know if the eggs you dehydrated go bad?
Hello, Watch out for discoloration. Once powdered eggs go bad, they will darken. You will notice that it is turning brownish once it is past its shelf life. The texture will also change. When it is in good condition, it is soft and powdery, similar to flour. However, if it goes bad, it will have clumps. The powder will turn sticky and inconsistent. An unpleasant smell is another indication that the powdered egg is no longer in a good condition. If it smells sour or off, discard it immediately. I hope this helps 🙂
@@GardeningintheNorththank you
Can you store your powder eggs in bags for a food saver
@@Diane-k8k I’ve never done this, but I don’t see why not. Would you store them in the freezer afterwards? Maybe do each bag with a dozen eggs to be used all at once, after opening.
I’ve never heard anybody putting them in the refrigerator after they open them. They just resealed them.
When is the right time to plant them? I’m in Kentucky 6b
Anytime! I've planted them all season.
Great video but you did not get into storage. I assume they have to be kept in refrigerator, but for how many days or weeks?
Hello! There is much debate on this. I have made these for years and keep them sealed in my pantry. I make roughly 1/2 dozen jars, and we are usually out by March. I have never had any of my jars go bad.
@@GardeningintheNorth Thank-you for quick reply. I'm in Zone 5b central Nova Scotia :-) Yes I was researching on this for 4 hours - and is a lot of recent controversy on the safety of storing homemade sundried or dehydrated tomatoes. (we don't add Sulphites or silicone dioxide). Even Purposeful Pantry only commits to a few days in fridge! Oregon Cottage has done sun dried for MANY YEARS no problems - and was put off by the new found warnings, so she did great research. She learned years ago from a old pro to dip each piece in red wine vinegar to add to acidity before putting in oil, and only add DRY herbs (like you) not fresh like we do dill pickles. I'm going to try the red wine vinegar dipping then store in fridge, and then use the used vinegar to make my pickled beets and onions 🙂
@@simplyfinancials that sounds very interesting. Maybe use a bowl and strainer to do a bunch at a time. I also dry mine out pretty good, I wonder if that also has something to with being safe. I think in the end, it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I think I saw someone put theirs in the freezer, but I would hate for them to crack. 🤔
Have you done a part 2 yet? I'm interested in growing the walking onions in my box garden 😁
Hello! I now grow these amazing onions in my raised beds and they are doing great! Checkout my garden Tours at my new property 🙂
@@GardeningintheNorth your awesome thank you!
I know you mentioned cayenne pepper earlier in the season! Lucky chickens! When do you start feeding the cayenne to them?
Hello! We can start mixing the powdered cayenne into their treat mixture anytime. We will start adding it to their feed dispenser in December, every few weeks 🙂
