Imperial German Bayonets
Приєднався 9 чер 2016
While there are many good youtube channels about historic guns, channels about bayonets are hard to find. I want to change that with Imperial German Bayonets.
Here I want to talk about prussian and german bayonets, sword and some historic firearms from 1809 - 1918. All the weapons on my channel are from my collection and they are well over 100 years old. You wont find any polished and shiny bayonets here like you would in some identification books. My blades have real patina and some are not in the best shape anymore but all of them are interesting and worth taking a closer look.
I hope you have as much fun viewing the content as I had creating it.
With kind regards
Vincent

I have what i believe is a s98/05 sawback 1915 could you please help me with more information on it. I can send pictures. Thanks
Couldn't identify one until this morning, thanks so much, 👍
hi in my blucher there are marks that I don't know (5.LH.2) (LR.37). what does it mean?
Hi, your markings reads as follows: "L.R.37" - "Landwehr-Regiment Nr. 37" or in english "37nd landwehr-regiment". "5. L.H. 2." - 5. Landwehr-Husaren-Regiment, 2 Eskadron" or in english "5th landwehr-hussar-regiment, 2nd squadron". Before 1852 the prussian Landwehr was organised in combined regiment, combining both infantry and cavalry, the "Landwehr-Regimenter". This is were your first unit marking comes from. In 1852 the prussian landwehr got reorganised. Now every line cavalry regiment got their own landwehr cavalry regiment counterpart. In your case the sabre was carried by a soldier of the 5th landwehr hussars.
Hi, do you know anything about the 71/84 with the muzzle ring removed?
Hello Vincent, firstly can I thank you for an excellent informative video and your perfect english! Secondly, I would like your help on two items in my collection. One is a cavalry sabre, which is like the M1811 you show, with markings R.P.17.2 (cursive R) on hilt and scabbard, the other is a SG1884/98 II marked 3.M.G.B.460 18 (B is partially stamped so could be R, maybe even K as top and bottom missing) on the crossguard. Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks. But what is the difference between 98 bayonet Old vs New pattern? How was fixed bending problem? By different steel or geometry?
They changed the constrution of the grip. It was not the blade that was bending but the grip, the tang if you want to use knife terminology. The inner grip construction was beefed up a lot resulting in way more metal inside the grip, thats why they started using two wood pices with the "neuer Art" handle instead of the older one pice handle from the "alter Art". that is the best way to spot the diffrnce between the old and new pattern bayonet 98.
@@imperialgermanbayonets9244 thanks) when i was child and played with old pattern, grip was bending, and i thought it was made softer to prevent blade from bending!
Hi
I was able to identify the Imperial German markings on my M1879 Reichsrevolver as the Uhlan Regiment thanks to your fantastic video.
I believe I have one of these, but I’m not sure. On one of the sides of the blade, it has an image of a crown with Erfurt written under it. On the spine, there is another crown with 14 written beneath it, and beneath the 14 there is what I believe is the letters RG. Regardless, a relative of mine brought it back from the war (We aren’t positive if it’s from our German family, or our family that already lived in America at the time. A story lost to time, tragically.) it’s one of my favorite historical possessions.
Great video
From Ireland great video
Very cool, sadly not many pay attention to obscure swords anymore. Any chance you could do an Austro-Hungarian list?
Habe einz,esist 1861 und S.B. gestempelt Seebattalion? & ander Scheide am Hangehaken M. W. D. Mariene Werft Divison ?. ?
Hi, yes, S B. is Seebataillon. Are you sure that the "M" from M.W.D. is not "II."? "II.W.D." would be 2nd Werft-Division.
Großartige Arbeit!
Thanks for the information! I have a Prussian-captured French Chassepot bayonet with a unit marking stamped onto the guard, it reads: 88.L.II.4.233. What do you think the Roman numeral “II” stood for?
I've been looking all over for one of these bayonets. No idea why these bayonets are so hard to come by at a decent price, especially in comparison to similar bayonets like the Chassepot
I have one of these with the proof marks and a manufacturer mark but no property mark. Is it a never issued one?
i always wondered why the fear of the sawback bayonet, the saw really makes it a worse weapon because it limits penetration when thrusting
BS, a wound made with sawback will never heal or it will take very long time, that’s the reason.
The one that I prefer is the M1889 because it has a very good hand guard and a stiff pipe back blade. This is exclent for the thrust and cut. It is a heavy blade but nimble in the hand. I love it.
I have one with a saw back and v notched demilitarized lock for police use because of the Versailles Treaty
do you know if the dress bayonets are ok to mount on a rifle and fire? the grip fittings appears to be non metallic
I have the WKC knights helm marking on mine . My uncle brought it back from WW2 . I would like to remove some of the rusty area's between the handles . Any sugestion's ?
A few years back I acquired a couple of sawbacks cut down fòr Turkey ,I belive ,a waist of lovely German blades ,Sarco waz selling them ,but I do love sawbacks....Jim
I lòve saw backs ,I have five 98/05 s, at this time ,what I looking for is a 98/02 ,now .Also I have six other sawbacks, Swiss, firemans, etc. LOVE SAWBACKS....
Hi Vincent, thank you for all your videos to date! I have a Bavarian Kar71 marked with 2.R.C. Would be great to find out what the C denotes. I'm also looking at a hirschfanger bayonet marked with G.S.E, so would that be Guard Schutzen Ersatz? Much appreciated!
Hi, you are right with the Hirschfanger. Regarding the unit marking from your K71 i dint know a solution from the top of my head. You can send me a picture. This alwys helps when it comes to unit markings. imperialgermanbayonets@gmail.com Cheers, Vincent

Any idea where to get a scabbard? Mine is missing.
Thanks Vincent, most helpful but as you say, lots of variants...I have a sword marked 2.J.R.P.1.75 with 175 stamped on the inside of the scabbard. It had a previous mark peened out. Otto Mertens Solingen dated 97. Any help appreciated. Seems to be Kav. Style? David
Hi David, your sword belonged to the "2nd Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde, 1st squadron, weapon no. 75." The 1 75 is a short variant of the unit marking "1st squadron, weapon no. 75.". The Jäger zu Pferde (or mounted jaegers) were a type of light cavalry in the late prussian army. In total 14 regiments were raised between 1901 and 1913. Diffrent to other cavalry units they were designed from the start up as scouts and messengers. They wore an intersting mix of uniforms. Some parts of cuirassiers, some dragoon pieces and so on. A cool topic to research. Cheers, Vincent.
@imperialgermanbayonets9244 Thank you Vincent, that is fantastic information. Would you be able to suggest a first contact point in Germany to turn that 75 into the man this belonged to? Is it likely to be possible?
@@DaveKelly-s6y Sadly not. If those papers had survived WW1 they have most likley been destroyed by the fire storms of WW2. So many documents have been lost between 1918 and 1945, it is more or less impossible to match the "75" to a specific soldier.
@imperialgermanbayonets9244 Thanks Vincent, that's too bad, it would have been nice to get it back home.
Hello Vincent. My 1871 is marked 30.L.I.1.223. I believe the L is Landwehr but can you help with the rest please?
This is a great video. I was able to classify a new pattern 1912 marking with this video. Thank you.

I have a sawback and model 71 mauser cal. 11mm tha it slides on too nicely and the metal scabbard has the imperial cross and maker is jh becker
Helle. I have a german bayonet with some markings on it. Is there ant way for you to tell me what they mean? Its stamped RLM.
Hi. I am guessing its a S84/98 n.A. or S98/05 n.A. bayonet? RLM is a post 1918 unit marking and reads as "R eichs L uftfahrt M inisterium" so the ministry of aviation from the nazi era. This bayonet was used during the nazi era by some unit under the command of the ministry of aviation. Cheers, Vincent.
@@imperialgermanbayonets9244 Thank you. The bayonet is one of those butcher blandes. I can see a «w» and the nummer 15 on the top of the blade. I dont know how to post pictures here…
didn’t saw toothed blades get banned by the geneva convention somtime during the war or something ?
Thank you very informative keep up the good work
I just acquired one. No saw back. It’s not marked on the blade, but it looks like somebody engraved: B. 11. (B or R), E1. 961. On the cross guard. Steel sheath. The scoring on the new modification is noticeable. The ears are very small, looks worn or filed down.
Hi, "B.11.R.E. 961" reads as "Bavarian 11th infantry-regiment, Ersatz-bataillon, weapon no. 961".
Argentine Mauser 09 is beautiful bayonet and Brazilian Mauser 08 is also nice bayonet is manufactured at Solingen and it is used during ceremonial bayonet during Brazilian military 🪖 Academy graduation
Hello, great to find the channel. I just got one that looks very similar, handle seems to be exactly the same, but it has a quilion that curves towards the blade, and from the makes marks, I am thinking Kaiser Wilhelm I era. I just uploaded a video of it, if you would take a look and help me learn more about it, I would be very grateful!
Hello friend, I am Cuban and apparently I have a German m98/05 bayonet. I would like to send you a photo so you can tell me if it is real.
Sure. Go ahead. imperialgermanbayonets@gmail.com
Hey man, love your videos! I watch them a lot since I started collecting prussian swords and sabers. I have a question about an M1852 saber I just picked up. It has this regiment number: 11.A.F.4.H.48. Do you know what the ‘H’ stands for in this sequence? There is also an older marking readable: L.2.55. 2 other ones are completely illegible. Thanks and keep making videos! Looking forward to seeing more in depth videos about swords and sabers in particular ;)
Hi, the "H" in the first unit marking stands for "Haubitzen" or in english "howitzer". Therefore "11.A.F.4.H.48." stands for "footartillery-regiment no. 11, munition-column no. 4 (for howitzers), weapon no. 48.". Your second unit marking "L.2.55." reads as "2. Lehr-Kompanie der Fußartillerie-Schießschule, Waffe Nr. 55" or in english "2nd training-company of the artillery school, weapon no. 55". A rare unit marking to find! Cheers, Vincent.
@@imperialgermanbayonets9244 Thanks! I was wondering what it meant. I’m slowly adding to the collection. Newest addition is a KD89 of the 7th Husaren. Looking forward to more of your very informative videos!
Good morning. Thanks for this very informative video. I have a new pattern sabre from 1911 with a damaged P guard that I'm considering altering. I was wondering if the P guard is high carbon or mild steel? Also...If I remove the P section of the guard...will the hilt section remain tight? Or does the P bar spring load the handle keeping everything tight? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!
How about I.M.I.3.98?
Are these post Imperial knot rules? For WWI and before, isn't it only the bayonet knots that vary by batallion/company? IE, a Prussian officer would have the same sword knot no matter which unit (ie, the long strap beign black and white striped, the slide being black and white weave, the crown and tassel being white and the inside of the tassel black?)
Hi. I guess the answer to your question depends on how you want to translate the word "sword knot". In my video i only talked about the trooper variants of the "Troddel" (foot soldiers) and "Faustriemen" (mounted soldiers) and translated "troddel" to bayonet knot and "Faustriemen" to sword knot. Those had the specific colour code as described in the video from 1818 until 1918. The portepee, the special sword knot for officers you are talking about, is not the topic of my video. But it i should have made it more clear that i was not talking about the officers variants but only the trooper/enlisted rank variants. I hope this answers your question. Cheers, Vincent.
Love ur content.i have a WW2 German Wehrmacht belt buckle with leather tab and it's unit marked the mark is. 3./K.R/17.I any help is appreciated!
Hi. I am no expert on post 1918 unit marking but "3/K.R.17.1." should translate to "3rd squadron, cavalry regiment no. 17, belt buckle no. 1".
@@imperialgermanbayonets9244 thanks bro keep up the hard work

Yes
