      That is very expensive, I do hope you are able to reach your financial goal and make it to the Camino. If and when you get here you can live quite cheaply on the Camino by staying in municipal albergues (€10) and eating food from the supermarket - this is what lots of people do.

    I think the demand is so great now that doing it “on the fly” may not be a good idea, especially now that individual pilgrims are competing with efficient pre planned, pre booked tour companies. Thoughts?

    • @Caminohacks
      @Caminohacks 18 днів тому

      I think you can still do large parts of the Frances ‘on the fly’. But, there are sections when it would be advisable to book, especially during busy periods. The general consensus is if you want to be safe and not worry about a bed race, book from st Jean until Pamplona, after that it opens up and there are lots mor options. You can also stay ‘off stage’, avoid the crowds and discover some lesser known towns and albergues. The last 100kms you may well want to book ahead a day or two. Busy periods are May, June, end of sept into October on the Camino Frances. I found the Portuguese Camino very busy during august and there were often not enough beds to go round in some towns for people who hadn’t booked

    "The Camino" more and more seems like a trendy little suburban lifestyle experience like going to Disney World. You adopt all the trappings of " The Camino Experience" pretend it has some life-changing effect on you....then you go do it again. You collect more Caminos. Very strange. I'm not joining the crowd, saying "Buon Camino!" to every passerby like some cult member. The rest of you can go take a hike.

    • @Caminohacks
      @Caminohacks 28 днів тому

      What makes you say people pretend it has some life changing effect? Do you know what it means to these people, have you asked or are you making this judgement from afar? Buen Camino is simple and friendly way of wishing others a good way. Nothing cult like, but if it’s not for you then fine. People often ‘collect more caminos’ because they get so much from walking a Camino route, being in nature, the sense of community and freedom to walk and stay in lots of different types of communal accommodation. A 1-week camino route on one of the more popular routes can seem slightly more commercial than a more remote route, but who are we to judge the effect it has in people? People walking these shorter routes are often then inspired to go walk lesser know routes.

    I hate walking poles. They are pointless. I have never seen them used correctly. Mostly they are carried and get in the way. In August I start my twelfth Camino from St Jean. My pack is 25ltr plus 5. With all my gear in it the weight is 3.6kgs. I use Altra Olympus trail runners with toe socks and thin Bridgedale merino wool mix over. I never get blisters and never get sweaty feet. I am 75 years old and have given myself 34 days to comfortably walk the 800 kms of the Frances.

    • @Caminohacks
      @Caminohacks Місяць тому

      I agree that there can be a lot of people on the trail that don’t seem to know how to use them, but when used properly they can be a life saver. Great for going up hills and a life saver coming down hills, especially after Cruz de fero. 12 Camino’s! Wow, that’s amazing going. 3.6kgs is super lightweight, nice work getting it down such a low weight. Good to hear the double sock method works for you, my feet don’t get on with it in the heat, so I stick single socks. You’re an inspiration, I hope your forthcoming Camino is a good one. Buen Camino!

    • @harrykey2448

      I will soon be setting off on my 12th Camino from SJPDP. I have literally never seen anyone using poles correctly. I have seen blistered hands and people complaining of repetitive strain injuries caused by using poles incorrectly. I use Altra Olympus trailrunners. They breathe so well that even using double socks my feet never get hot. As for the descent after the Cruz de Ferro...at 75 years of age I never have a problem. Wind rain snow and sunshine. Poles just get in the way and slow people down.

    • @Caminohacks
      @Caminohacks 29 днів тому

      Well, you've not seen me use my poles! 😂. Sounds like the people you've seen using them could've done with watching a UA-cam video tutorial, ouch. I've heard Altras have a lot of toe room. Great you've found a combination that works for you on all your Caminos. Glad to hear you get no problems with the decent down from Cruz De Ferro. Buen Camino for your 12th Camino!

      I did both a couple of days ahead, but that was in august. I just walked this route in the beginning of May. It was a bit cooler and a lot wetter when I walked it though. A couple of notes, wait till sunrise (or at least till it starts to get light out) before you leave Armenteria. The trail leaving there was one of the best walks of the Camino. Regarding the boat ride, the time they leave is determined by the tides. The day I went the first boat was not until 11am.

      I totally understand your dilemma, you want to mark your birthday milestone with a special trip but being away that long from the wife and responsibilities at home is a big ask. I think adding on Finisterre and Muxia would add so much to your experience. You have the buzz and busyness of the Frances, then the more contemplative Finisterre and Muxia route. You’d be there and back in two weeks which could be done with a return flight to Santiago.

      That's great to hear you've reduced the weight of your pack by 1g! Well done. It's your choice, but I would say you do not need to take the water filter, if you're ever in doubt and don't trust the water source, simply buy a large bottle of water from a shop. If money is tight, go to a supermarket and the water is super cheap there.

    this is an excellent episode, Dan! I love the long , in-depth format, it really allows the viewer to immerse in your camino. I dig the voiceover mixed with ambient sounds. it really ties the whole thing together nicely. That monster arrow! 😂 The Snore-overs 😳 And Portuguese pastries? Let’s just say, Spain could learn a thing or three from Portugal. It seems they have much to learn from their neighbors when it comes to the art of flaky, buttery perfection. I’ll need to walk this Camino *just for that* 👀 The Church of Croissant: do they accept new pilgrims, those of us who worship at the altar of fatty carbohydrates? If so, I shall don my backpack and make haste to this hallowed (imaginary?) establishment - I’m ready to partake in their flaky, golden sacraments. here’s a Camino lifehack: pack some hot sauce (Tabasco, or ideally something more interesting), and even a humdrum tortilla turns into something mildly interesting. 🧠 keep ‘em coming!

    • @Caminohacks
      @Caminohacks 2 місяці тому

      Thank you, buddy. Means a lot coming from the master of Camino voice overs. There were parts where I simply didn’t have anything to say, so rather than try to find some random fact I left it blank and natural - part deliberate, part what the hell. Ha ha, so much snoring. To be fair, the last one was out of this world! I actually got up and gave the offenders bed a nudge it was so bad. 💤 The Portuguese breakfast game is A++. Ha ha, if you walk it you may come back heavier than when you started, the food is so good. I think they’ll welcome you with open arms, my friend! It’s on the Litoral route, day one from Porto, I’ll give them a call and tell them to fire up the ovens, because a hungry pilgrim is on route. Great idea, although my favourite hot sauce comes in a glass bottle, adding extra weight. Maybe I leave the toothpaste at home and use hot sauce instead.😂 Thanks again, I’m looking forward to watching your next adventures.

    You have a lot of shoes. Is that normal? I imagine pilgrims might smell a lot of sweat. I hope they change with every bath. That doesn't seem like a lot of underwear, but I am not an expert, nor have I ever done this. I am here to learn. Thank you.

    • @Caminohacks
      @Caminohacks 3 місяці тому

      Hi, thanks for watching the video. I have shoes for winter/spring hikes (gore-tex) and shoes for the summer months (lighter and breathable). I only ever take one pair to walk in. People can get very smelly after a long walk in the heat, but all of the accommodation has showers, which you use once you've gotten into the accommodation. You only really need two outfits if you're walking in the warmer months, so two pairs of underwear are fine. You walk in one, then after you shower you pop on your clean pair. It does mean you have to wash them each day though - which is better than a bag full of heavy, dirty clothese. The aim is to try and pack light. It can take a bit of practice, but can become very freeing needing less. I'm here to help if you need anymore advice. I think it's great you're learning about the Camino, it can be a truly life changing trip.
