Porsche 911 (996) Restoration - Power Steering Modification & Engine Work Begins - Part 59
Dear All,
After many weeks of waiting, the new PAS parts are finally done. So I set off after work on a Friday afternoon to pick them up and fit them to the car.
Also, after even more months of sitting under a blanket, I start work on the engine. Which is really exciting stuff and something I have been worrying about, but looking forward to.
On a personal note, I mentioned to you last week that I have changed jobs and am embarking on a new life in Vienna for a year, then on to the US. So far, I have moved into a copletely empty (but lovely) apartmen in Vienna with my son, and we will start to fill it with furniture very soon. The first piece of furniture was a WiFi router which was shortly followed by some inflatable beds. :)
I hope you enjoy the video.
J.

Porsche 911 (996) Restoration - Caliper Refurbishment #3 - Part 58

Dear All, In this video I continue working on all four calipers of the car. I gave the calipers with the snapped bleeder valves to a shop which didn't do a great job, but I am working with it. I also discovered the issue behind the non-working headlight washers. Which is great. They have never worked in my ownership and finding the issue is a relief. It is so simple!! I hope you enjoy the video...

Dear All, Well, its been a while since I last uploaded a video. Things are very busy here, and as I have mentioned to many of you, I am planning a big move. I have decided to leave my current job in Germany and move to pastures new - which is very exciting indeed. I will update you on this in a separate video, but for now here is a little update on the 911. Much love from Dresden, Joël

So in this video I tackle a job which has been waiting on the shelf for many, many months. The crusty calipers. Years of salt water has made them very nasty indeed, and I hope I can save them. Nice video! I just got my 996 and there is the slightest coolant drip only like 4x drips 4-6 hrs after driving (think during the day or night after work). The PPI said the hose is loose and at a bad angle (not flush). I am afraid to just push it home and re tighten as I am sure the hose has "learned" its position. I need to do a new serpentine belt and a few other maintenance items so I think I will be going with this main rear water hose kit! I REALLY like the quick fitting hose kit. If you are still active, I wonder how this part stood the test of time, how long did it work for you for? Any issues? Thanks,

Hi, thanks for your message. I am indeed still active and am uploading a full 4 year restoration of the 996 on the same channel. So make sure you have a look. You will learn loads of the jobs you have a head of you 😅 Congratulations on getting the 996. They are truely great cars indeed. Very well engineered and thought out. Let me know if you need any further advice. I am travelling a lot these days but happy to help where I can. Regarding the hose repair, I have had no issues at all with it. Been as good as gold and it’s a worthy upgrade. Your issue is probably due to a stretched hose and they will all need replacing eventually. My other car is a 1970’s Land Rover and it drips fluids all the time. In reality your drip is nothing to worry about at all. It’s just this image of perfection we have is difficult to shake. As long as the hose is not porous or damaged, it will be fine. Have fun driving your car and make sure any jobs you do don’t turn into a full restoration. Otherwise you will never drive it! Let’s me know what spec/age/colour it is. Kind regards, Joël

They make repair kits that you can tap with a pipe thread and then insert a tube nut that the bleeder then fits into. I’ve done it on bmw brakes. Some high end calipers use that setup by design.

You want references from those doing the work prior to handing over the parts. And ask questions that cannot be answered by a simple yes or no. I.e 'out of how many aluminium brake calipers have you successfully retrieved broken bleed valves?'.' Ask questions how they will go about when hitting a snag and how they prevent certain mistakes that will leave you with a useless part and a bill. It's not a guarantee that you will find a professional but you will quickly identify the bull crappers

Left handed drill set is your friend!!! The other option is to get a proper machine shop to drill and tap oversize and helicoil it. OR machine oversize, press in a new piece of ally and then drill and tap a whole new thread and seat.

I wonder if there's a larger thread available for bleed nipples? You could then tap them out larger but it's the seat down inside that's the really important bit, if that's been scuffed with a drill I think you're on a hiding to nothing. Other option is a Time-Sert thread repair.

Funny, I'm currently gathering parts for a fairly full brake job on my 996 but will wait until the weather sours as I've had too much fun actually driving the car this summer. Currently, just gathering parts: new discs (SHW) all round, ceramic pads, sensors and am just debating whether I should get replacement sets of those brake dampeners before I start the job. Just done the exact thing today with my calipers and they look identical to yours. The top part of the thread gets corroded because of the steel bracket that's fixed to the caliper ( dissimilar metals) but there should be enough good thread to get hold of the brake pipe nut and pul it in tight. I did replace the seals with Bigg Red ones, £22 for all in both calipers , they get good reviews so we'll see.

Replace the auxiliary spring (made of polyurethane) inside the gaiter of the front struts when you replace the latter. The one you showed is perished and they play an important role in the overall spring/damper/ARB calibration. Much more than the term 'bump stop' would lead you to believe. Replace them in pairs.

Corrosion starts at the weld between the hollow piston and the solid upper part with the thread and hex as the weld is never as solid a base for the subsequent chrome plating as the material right next to it. (In case you wanted to know 😊) The grease is a good idea against rust (dont know how well the polyurethane aux. spring takes it, though). On the 997 the front piston rods rust a lot faster and are a known MOT/TUV fail. 9x6 better quality in that respect. Good job on the refurbishment, love the dedication to also get the details right.

If the anodizing has become spotty at the face, you could paint, I guess but with the compression against the pad/anti-squeal plate when braking it will be short lived. Replacing the pistons would give you peace of mind for the next 20y.

Joel the rubber goes hard with age the car is 20 plus years old.. with the work you have done on the car to preserve it.. it’s a shame on a performance car not to change a lot of the suspension and brake parts…. A piston kit is pennies.. much like the suspension.. new bearings & top mounts etc are really a must really.. making it shining with paint doesn’t help the driving experience.. just my take.. it’s all subjective I guess.. 🤙🏼

Hey Joel, your videos on this have been flipping excellent! Thank you for all the detail! I had a problem that required the removal of the rack on my C4S and those VOSS fittings were jammed in my rack also. I ended up cutting both lines at the hard line up stream of the flex sections thinking I could get new sections made up and we could just join them in. Which we can. I also managed to get VOSS to send me some fittings .... turns out they are making them again! However!.... I'm struggling with two things .... fitting the new VOSS fittings onto the hard lines just like you have found tricky, and what to do about that flow restriction valve thing. PS what you might not want to hear is that you can get these lines from Porsche direct now... they have them in stock in the UK. They are £482 inc VAT each still though. My car is not as disassembled as yours though so I am trying to avoid taking it all apart just to replace those lines ... as well as the cost!

    • @My911
      @My911 3 місяці тому

Hi, thanks for your email. I know where you are at. To fit the OEM VOSS fittings you need two things. A lip around the end of the pipe, and a crimping tool for the VOSS fitting. Both of which is not easy. I ended up developing a new VOSS style fitting at a machine shop and built a compression fitting into the end of it. Regards Joël

Hi, thanks for your message. I bought a pair of plates but decided not to fit them. It would have meant separating the good hub which ruins the bearing. I’m sure I’ll fit them at some point. For some reason the C2 stone guards do not have a gap in the fixing ring to pass over the hub shaft. Unlike the C4S which does. I feel it’s a bit of a design fault.

Probably too late but I just did the calliper seals on my Turbo , you have a choice in the UK of Brembo , Big Red or Frentech. I went Brembo (2x price but I'm not messing about with brakes) . I used some red rubber grease to assemble them. I did then fit OEM Textar pads and now wish I had gone with Yellow Stuff like you. Also fitted some SS braided hoses.

Nice work, Joël. If it’s sub zero in the garage, I’m guessing you might be a month or two behind in real time? You must be consulting quite a few of your videos in reverse for the reassembly process. Seems also like you're well organized on labelling and bagging nuts and bolts too. When I diagnosed a failed fuel pump a few months ago, I took the opportunity to pump out almost all the fuel and what few pieces of contamination I could find in the tank before installing a new pump and fuel sender unit but, must say, it seemed like a piece of cake compared to reinstalling the tank itself. Looks like you’re finally reaping rewards after all that extensive work on the power steering lines too. That’s gotta feel satisfying.

Hi Marcus, yes I’m definitely behind on YT. It’s a lot of work making videos and finding the time is not easy. It is rewarding putting it all back together, but the frustration of the job is a strong contender 😅. But for me, this is part of Porsche ownership, it’s not all about the driving. That said, once it’s done, I’ll definitely use it more. I’ve done such little mileage in it since my ownership and it’s been over 7 years with me now. 😬
