  • Dear All,
    After many months of lying dormant in a corner of the barn collecting dust, I have finally put aside the Porsche and started work on the Land Rover.
    The poor thing has sat neglected since the beginning of the year, and needs some work for the TUV. As you know the brake cylinder front right started leaking, and the washer jets are still blocked on one side. When does it end?
    Anyway, it is great to be back on it and to hear the old girl roar into life, albeit it had to ‘brake’ with the hand brake.
    Enjoy the video and let me know what you think about silicone brake fluid please.
    Regards Joël

    You can refurbish the brake shoes by heating them enough to boil away the oils. Old timers used to put them on top of a wood stove in winter. I've seen people also use an acetylene torch. Probably only works with riveted ones, as it would probably melt the glue on the ones that are bonded. Also brake cylinders are very easy to rebuild and the rebuild kits aren't expensive.

      Thanks for that, I’ll hold onto them. The cylinders are only defective as the seals which are glued to the pistons has given way. I am thinking of devising a repair mod. 👍

    Nice job as always. The old brakes looked yuk! One suggestion before fitting any new cylinders is to put a smear of red rubber grease on the cylinder piston and around the gater. The reason for this is in case you get water behind the rubber garter it can cease the cylinder in the barrel. I had that on one of my front cylinders and I had not been in water.

    I'm surprised at Delphi parts, they are usually pretty good. That said, I have had to replace my clutch slave cylinder twice in as many years, so maybe they aren't what they were? Anyway, keep up the good work. Always good to see your Series 3.

    I overhauled the entire braking system on my 88, about four years ago, used TRW cylinders, as I am super sceptical to Chong dong stuff, and have silicon fluid. The advantage with silicon is that it is not hydroscopic, and it lubricates seals nicely, so in theory, you never need to change fluid. It does however still gat condensation related water in, over many years, so good practice to change every tens years or so. I have used silicon in all my collection, whenever a braking system get overhauled entirely.

      Hi Gary, that’s is good feedback, thank you. I think I will do the same. Do you have a recommended brand?

    • @garypoulton7311
      @garypoulton7311 11 місяців тому

      I used TRW, I always pull new cylinders apart and look inside, just check for burrs and bits of metal, never used to, but there's so much rubbish out there. Surprised at LOF, they have a good reputation, and I assumed they sold only quality parts. Probably good enough for you to lightly hone and put new, OEM or Land Rover seals into your cylinders. I bought ,y TRWs from Paddock spares, they are good for export, deduct VAT and no customs charges, via DHL. Timers use UPS, and I have have some nasty surprises with customs clearance charges there. Good luck!

      Suddenly realised you probably meant brand of silicon brake fluid... I used to buy it from Automec, but I know To sport and Rimmers sell it, can ot remember the brand name, but it's a black plastic bottle, with a yellow ang green label.

    Were all the new cylinders badly made? Almost as frustrating as my current LR experience - Boo got back from the restoration, looking all shiny and great, second drive out and the gears did not feel right, and were jamming or grinding or not engaging and I crawled round the block home and its all locked up - gear lever, overdrive, hi-lo. The FWH are running free so its not 4wd transmission lockup, so maybe its the clutch. I'd be back at the resto garage but...they went bust about four weeks after I got the car back. When I get some enthusiasm I'll check there's still clutch fluid in the system and see what state its in. Much annoyed...

      @My911  11 місяців тому

      Barry, that’s is terrible. I’m sorry to hear that. It’s actually easy to bugger up the gear box. I had an issue with mine as I had misaligned the gear selector in reverse. Opened it up again and got it sorted. If they rebuilt the main shaft, they could have got the spacing wrong with the gears. But check simplest things first.

    Out of interest, who did you get the parts from? I've had some slightly disappointing parts send from LR Parts in Liverpool and wondering if I should avoid. Cheers

    • @My911
      @My911  9 місяців тому

      Hello Harry, join the club. It’s hard to find good parts, even if they are available. Mine came from LOF Clutches, but they simply send Delphi parts, which were crap. The drums seem to be high quality though and I think they are made by LOF. Still haven’t finished the job tho so can’t tell you how their fair. Good luck with yours. Regards Joël

    Good to see more S3 adventures!
    Sadly, the aftermarket parts supply for historic 4 and 2 wheeled vehicles seems to be more miss than hit.
    Its the wasted time and effort changing prematurely failed parts that annoys me, although degraded brake pipe on a single circuit system recently is a big safety issue.
    I cant see why parts should be so poor, other than because of costs and market forces ....... l would prefer it if parts were 'graded' so you could choose to pay for increased longevity.
    Moan over!

    Das Problem mit den "Neuteilen" gibt es schon länger, meist sind die aus den bekannten blauen Kartons aus GB.....
    Aber ob Girling, oder TRW bessere Qualität Liefert ?
    Ich habe derzeit dasselbe Problem mit einer Undichtheit der Bremsen..... Muß mich nächste Woche mal dran machen und schauen, was da Los ist.
    Zum Glück habe ich in der Nähe einen Landyteile Laden, da kann ich gleich die Teile Kontrollieren.
    Und sollte ich die Bremszylinder tauschen müssen, werde ich gleichzeitig Überholsets mitnehmen, die alten Überholen und ins Regal legen, für alle Fälle.

    • @My911
      @My911  11 місяців тому +1

      Gute Idee. Es wird nicht lange dauern bis du den set brauchst. Ich denke aller supplier liefern das gleich ‚Qualität’ wenn es um Bremszylinder geht. Die Originale Gerling Teile waren die Beste. Aber die Zeiten sind vorbei. Lg Joël

      Hi Harry, thanks for your messages. I appreciate the music may not be to everyone’s tastes, but having uploaded almost 200 videos over the past few years I always like to try something new. And recently I’ve been experimenting with music.
      It takes a huge amount of time and effort to film, edit and upload the videos and I really enjoy the helpful feedback I receive from my subscribers. So one-liners like your first message are a little hard for me to digest given the abruptness of the comment. Although I am sure you meant no harm by it. Perhaps something positive followed by some constructive criticism would be more uplifting. Sometimes I really have to force myself to go to the garage to work on the cars and film it all, so encouragement in the comments helps a lot. That said, I’ll bear your second comment in mind and make sure to get some quality ‚workshop sounds‘ in the next one. Regards, Joël
