Solving a Leathercraft Project Problem
Welcome to my leathercraft channel where I cover my leathercraft adventures, projects and special commissions. In this video I go over the process of designing and building a custom leather messenger bag for a friend that celebrates his birthday and his passion for a classic 1962 Corvette Stingray Convertible that he owns. The projected used several different tools including a walking foot sewing machine, cylinder arm sewing machine, rivet setters and hardware that I purchased from Tandy Leather. There was a problem with my original design of the front flap, because it became too thick and would not take a stitch well given the softness of the pull up leather. After exploring several bad choices, I decided to redesign the front flap of the leather messenger bag. The final bag is a two tone pull up chrome tanned leather horizontal messenger bag with a front flap design containing the Corvette hood ornament and the front panel has a vintage Corvette patch attached. This messenger bag is inspired in design in part by the United States Postal Mail bags that were used post World War Two.
Many of my projects are more on the creative side of leathercrafting where I explore using chainstitch embroidery, using different bag designs and using upcycled materials. Sometimes my creativity can create other challenges that require problem solving skills. Each project requires different materials, designs, and artistic elements which demands new solutions to the problems these materials create. Not all sewing machines are the same and certain leathercraft projects require a walking foot sewing machine or some other type of industrial sewing machine.
Solving a Leathercraft Project Problem is very normal. It would be nice if everything worked out as expected, however it is important to be able to adjust the use of materials and tools to the requirements of each unique project and not develop a form of project tunnel vision.
