    Great test Mate , hdj79 owner. You seem to run lower rpm than myself, 2800 at 100kph on 285/75. Any change to ratios?

    • @downunderprojects9322
      @downunderprojects9322 День тому

      No change to the gearbox ratios. It's stock standard. Maybe the little bit more air from the new airmar snorkle??? They reckon that these raised air intake with the ram style head only start working over 80kph?? Not sure? The bigger exhaust is definitely a game changer though. I love it! I have put the manta proper muffler on it since I made the vid. The hot dog was too loud for me and I reckon it goes even better now. Only drama I've had is that the exhaust pipe vibrates on the chasis where it comes out of the dump pipe. I've emailed Manta about it a few times and they've totally ignored me. Very slack customer service unfortunately.

      If your talking about the most forward bolt in the bowsprit then if I remember corectly it's just a ling bit of threaded rod with nuts, washers and backing plates on each end. You might just have to try and grab the rod with some vice grips to allow you to undo whichever nut won't undo.

    Wait until your fuel tank starts leaking and you have to cut everything up, including the tank to get it out. FYI the bottom of the tank sits just about in the bottom of the bilge and always in bilge water (not the best idea.)

    Leaks are a problem which never go completely away but can be brought under some control. You must be very persistent though. The worst problem I've had to face, was a badly leaking diesel tank. This required lifting the plywood sole in the galley and cutting the hull liner beneath it. Then cutting the 90 gallon aluminum tank into sections in order to lift them through the main companion way. A truly terrible project to be sure. I found the bottom of the old tank nearly touching the bottom of the bilge and sitting in bilge water (I wanted to shoot the marine architect). I hope you won't ever have to face such a mess (but you probably will).

    What were your EGT's running? The thing I noticed is how much cooler the truck seemed to run with the larger exhaust. Watch the temp gauge. I have a 95 Troopy with a 1HZ.

    • @downunderprojects9322
      @downunderprojects9322 9 місяців тому

      Yeah I've heard that. I didn't have an egt sensor on the original exhaust. I've got the sensor now on the 3 inch but haven't hooked it all up yet. Also got a water temp gauge fitted when I installed my low coolant alarm but it's not hooked up yet either. Just need to power up my JRP 14 in one gauge but I've been slack. Original Troopy water temp gauges are notoriously inaccurate and can easily fluctuate by 20+ deg! So I haven't noticed much difference. Thanks for your feedback.

    • @rmcnabb
      @rmcnabb 9 місяців тому

      @@downunderprojects9322 Right, what I meant to say is that your truck seemed to run cooler with the larger exhaust, which I saw by watching your coolant temp gauge on your dash on the video. I said that badly. I have a stock exhaust and I know if I pushed my 1HZ like that the EGT would be over 1000 in no time.

    Seeing that Calcium build-up is just another readon why I tell boat owners to look at installing either a 3-way valve onto their thru hull seawater intake so the raw water can be closed off and the engine can then be run out of a 20 litre bucket of freshwster mixed with sum dishwashing liquid. Or a simple connection can be placed into the seawater strainer so a garden hose can be attatched to the strainer to flush the engine with. Saves time and a lot of money for a tiny outlay. Plus the added bonus of having the 3-way valve is that if God forbid the boat starts taking on water and the bilge pumps cant keep up or they fail you open the valve and with a suitable hose attatched you use the engine as a bilgepump. Plus I cant get over that the engines tube-stack has such a dead/unused portion in the middle.

    Just bought a Downeaster 38 and everything i have researched, learned indicates that you should replace not just the bolts but the chainplates themselves as while they may look ok to the naked eye likely suffer from weakening internal corrosion ..the Stainless steel of that era was not of as high quality as currently available.

      Good point John and it is something I plan to do once I get to Tassie but I want to swap them out for external plates. Luckily for us the DE38 ketch rig is over engineered and pretty small compared to boats built these days. I question your ideas about stainless made in America in the 70's compared to the crap that comes out of China these days which is all I'd be able to get in Australia. There are some great boat builders in Tassie and lots of great small scale manufacturers so I'll let you know what I end up going with. Who knows they may even be bronze!. It sure would look cool.
