Nice job with the butyl tape tool helper. That trick has helped me out a few times. I'm an ex Kiwi boat builder with a 1975 DE 38 in Hawaii undergoing a major refit with many jobs started and very few finished. Eventually I hope to take her the long way home after 25 years away. Good to see a someone else still enjoys a good chip sandwich but I'm surprised there isn't a beer open,,,,,,

G'day Steve, There was a sneaky Reschs tucked away out of camera shot. Well if you've got to refit a boat I think Hawaii would be the place to do it! All the best with it mate. Perhaps one day we'll cross paths.
      Dave.

Great job Gilly. A tricky job, nice to see all the new bolts in place. Nice work with the butyl mastic tape stuff too. 😃👍

Just bought a Downeaster 38 and everything i have researched, learned indicates that you should replace not just the bolts but the chainplates themselves as while they may look ok to the naked eye likely suffer from weakening internal corrosion ..the Stainless steel of that era was not of as high quality as currently available.

Good point John and it is something I plan to do once I get to Tassie but I want to swap them out for external plates. Luckily for us the DE38 ketch rig is over engineered and pretty small compared to boats built these days. I question your ideas about stainless made in America in the 70's compared to the crap that comes out of China these days which is all I'd be able to get in Australia.
There are some great boat builders in Tassie and lots of great small scale manufacturers so I'll let you know what I end up going with. Who knows they may even be bronze!. It sure would look cool.
      Thanks for your comment.

@@downunderprojects9322 this is one of the many sources I get my information on inferior grades of stainless steel from the 1970's ( start watch from about 6 mins in )ua-cam.com/video/VHX3K8o4MvM/v-deo.html fyi - I do not trust anything made in china , alas most everything it seems is these days ! all crap !

@@downunderprojects9322 I too want to go to external chain plates and bronze too ! there is a guy on here somewhere who just did so himself fabricating his own external bronze chain plates ! look forward to following you as you move forward , Thank you !😀 I am even considering redundant chain plates in case of failure in heavy seas -- - there are too many horror stories of demasting ! also see where all the big windows need pulled check for rot in frame and replaced with much more seaworthy windows for heel over in heavy seas , I am planning a worldwide voyage in my DE 38 ( will be launching my own UA-cam channel within next 6 months most likely called "Expedition Calypso Wind" - to carry on the journey of Steve Irwin , Jacque Cousteau & Anthony Bourdain ! ) . Smooth Sailing !
