    Aidan, great 496 videos. I’m going to take my two marine 486s apart next week and this is a refresher course. We build alike …… cleanliness & organization are essential to a good outcome. I like the way you painted the block. My Mercury engines will be black. Yes, I had a Pontiac long ago with that color engine. My Olds had a gold engine. Your attention to detail is amazing ….. same here. The three coats of primer within an hour was good to know. Then the color. Thanks again for great videos. Hey stop saying: “This is just the way I do it”. LOL Those us who think like you already get it. My engines have some rust issues. Any tips on getting rid of the rust? Thanks

    • @Aidansbuilds
      @Aidansbuilds 8 днів тому

      Hey Richard I appreciate your comment and hope your 486 project is coming along well! Depending on the rust you mentioned, if it is in the cylinders then they may need a bore! If it is the exterior of the block then personally I'd just clean it to the best of my abilitiy and get a primer that has some sort of rust inhibitor in it! Thanks for watching!

    The large chamfer is to clear the fillet of the connecting rod journal of the crankshaft. A narrow bearing is required. 2 spiral locks are usually used per side....4 total for one piston.

    I watched all the videos. I did not hear you talk about the machining on the block. What do you recommend for a 800hp build. And my second question is do I need a crankshaft and rods to see if the rods will hit the block?. Because I heard it takes some machining for clearance.

    • @Aidansbuilds
      @Aidansbuilds 3 місяці тому

      I did not talk much about the machining because I had a shop do it, but all it had done to it is get bored .60 over. Depending on your crank/rod combination you may end up with block interference, luckily I did not. This is something you will have to assemble to find out, some people grind the block and some people grind the rods. As far as what I would recommend for 800hp, there may be blueprints online with people who have achieved that, you will probably want higher compression pistons and an actual performance cam. Goodluck with the build!

    Pure craftsmanship. One thing I do when I am not using a ring expander to install the rings is that I take the trailing end of the ring as I spiral it on the piston and I put my fingernail under the sharp edge and slide it down over the piston to the correct groove and then pull my nail out. This prevents the end of the ring from scratching AND helps the ring slide over the top ring groove if it isn't the top ring.

    I would really have liked to know where the block failed on this motor. With some reading on the exhaust corrosion / mid section dry corrosion 2002 to 2008. models ,I wonder if this is a factor. Probably pressure testing the heads would be best so as to rule these out first?

    • @Aidansbuilds
      @Aidansbuilds 5 місяців тому

      Heads on the F series Yamaha outboards are pretty good, but we come across A LOT of cracked heads with the SHO's. The F series you are correct about the exhaust corrosion. Corrosion in general is a big issue for outboards, so you have to watch where they come from! I've seen blocks practically corroded to nothing left on the inside through the water passages.

    I can't sleep at night knowing a flat tappet cam is in my 496. I would love using one but unfortunately with the oil that's available today it's a roll of the dice if it'll last. And considering my rotating assembly alone cost 3k I'm not taking any chances.

    • @Aidansbuilds
      @Aidansbuilds 5 місяців тому

      I understand your viewpoint and a lot of people share your opinion too. Personally, I think it is okay but the break in procedure is crucial! I think with the proper additives today's oil is sufficient enough for flat tappet cams. The small block (283) in the car that I'm building this engine for runs a flat tappet. Years later, all good still!

    Hi, since I'm not so familiar with chevy engines and haven't done the stroking yet, I have some questions and hope to get some tips from you, since I want to build my engine from scratch. First of all, congratulations on the great job and the cool videos To my question, is the 496 based on the 454 engine? I read somewhere that the 454 is available as a 4 bold main, does the 4bold automatically have a 2pice seal. Is the one piece seal worse or are there problems with the one piece ? Which camshaft would you choose if you have both a good idle and sufficient vacuum for the brake booster, the power from 650-700 RPM idle to the end of the revs really pushes the car forward, but also does not lose too much power in the upper revs ?

    Aidan, when I am installing any piston, I first install the ARP Bolts on the bottom of each rod and a 2-foot section of Vacuum hose for each Bolt. It's just my way of no scratches on the crank.

    My machinist says big block Chevy valve guides are extremely difficult to get right and he quit doing them 20 years ago. I remember hearing the guides are cast into the head off center and some of them go through water jacket. Anyway with the cost and time of machining it makes heads like AFR enforcer assembled for $863 seem like a good deal to me.

    Great video Aidan really enjoyable to watch. It's very apparent that you have found the right guy to learn from he comes across as a very smart and humble guy with a good sense of humor and that makes for a great workday. My son and I have two older bass boats with two strokes and are able to do about 95% of our own work and really enjoy working together on them. The only stuff that is a problem is anything that needs to plug into a DDT to diagnose. We have talked about getting our own after market stuff to do that . Keep up the great content and you would probably also find a large following with the larger HP two stroke crowd as well if you are doing any because there are so many out there and people want to keep them going. We are considering repowering the one boat with a new 250 sho and I would be interested to hear what you guys have seen problem wise with this series of motors.

    • @Aidansbuilds
      @Aidansbuilds Рік тому

      Thanks Chris, I'm glad you enjoyed it! You can get the diagnostics off of ebay for a decent price, I would recommend it since you guys do a lot of your own work. We do two stroke stuff still but not as much, it seems like there is more of a market for four strokes. As far as the SHO's, we actually do a lot of them. The biggest issue we come across in the engines is water in the oil usually from a cracked head. They are good motors otherwise, I actually have a video doing a power swap two stroke to four with an SHO. Hoping to get back into the content soon. If you want more info on those engines feel free to send me a message on my instagram @aidansbuilds. Thanks for watching!
