Great story
Another great video.
My boy Yaniv! Another great video and astonishing story.
Hi, Mike. Glad see some Yaniv fans!
Extremely interesting story Keston and a well deserved outcome for all the time and effort put into it.
Appreciate it, Cap. Yeah. That was a lot of effort on Yaniv's part and very cool backstory.

Yet another incredible story! Thanks for bringing this to light. A great lesson to collectors to keep your eyes open too. Very low chance for this to happen but hey, you never know what you’re going to find.
Thanks, M.O.N. For sure. Yaniv certainly has the roaming eyes :-)

Great story.
Thank you, VV. You probably have more first comments than anyone :-)
News Flash! Modern comics will never be worth a million dollars. There are too many copies in circulation.
Thanks Jetscreamer for the comment. For sure. In my opinion, comic collectors do not pay enough attention to rarity. The most valuable books are often 1,000 times rarer (or more) than more modern ones. I created a video on the topic and would love your opinion. ua-cam.com/video/1clG9JnoYOY/v-deo.html
Your channel is so informative. So glad i found this. A lot of novice collectors should be watching this.
Thanks, Jerry. I was lucky enough to have a great mentor early in my collecting days who suggested pursuing the old, rare, and sought after books. IMHO, too many new collectors get snowed by dealers selling "rare" books that are actually common as dirt.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 you have accumulated a lot of wealth in the mind and it shows in your collection too. You are so generous in spending time educating people about this. Thanks a lot. I knew a lot about what you've posted in the videos but I went through some early aches and pains in the early 2000s, fortunately an old blue label for giant size x-men 9.2 never cost over 1000 so paying 900 back then for that was a rip off. I managed to hang on from 2010 till now. :)) The key is buying old, key appearance, and high grade. Most importantly is buying something you like and not worrying about it going to zero. I paid $1200 for incredible hulk 181 8.5 white in 2011. I was asking myself why I'm paying for this. Because I loved the comic. $1200 was insane money for hulk 181 8.5 white at the time.
Nice video, i did exactly that in around 2011-2013, loaded up a bunch of graded superman and batman below #30. I grabbed a few batman $18 with hitler, mussolini and hirohito on the cover. Also a bunch of iconic joker covers #11, 23, 49. A decade ago everyone was chasing the MCU while batman movies were trash and nonexistent after the dark knight. Now decent grade batman comics are through the roof.
Thanks, Jerry. Nice strategy. Yeah, I was loading up on mostly golden age classic covers around the same time! Suspense 3, for example, had not seen much love between 2005 through 2015. It was mostly flat during that period from what I can tell.
@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 nice job. I also grabbed 3 high grades FF48. Lots of sleepers during that time. They hype was xmen and spiderman. I think new mutants 98 was one of the craziest during that time. Hard to get any good golden age books now. No supply, high demand. Over 70 watchers on ebay for those types of auctions
Very informative and much appreciated video. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words, Ismael!
Hi Keston, just wanted to let you know yours is my favorite comic book collecting UA-cam channel. Great content.
Thanks, ETRX. That means a lot to me :-)
Some notes about Crime SuspenStories 22 - According to an interview Bill Gaines did in 1985 (published in Comic Book Marketplace issue 80), the average sales per issue of CSS must have been somewhere around 350k to 400k. I say this because Gaines states that (prior to MAD taking off) the three horror titles led EC sales, with 400k to 450k per issue. He goes on to say that the science-fiction titles initially sold 300k per issue but then declined. He wraps up by saying that CSS and Shock SuspenStories sold better than anything except horror. Hence my guesstimate of 350k to 400k. And keep in mind that Gaines is apparently talking about sales figures, not print runs - which would be higher. It’s also worth pointing out a couple of other things… Collectors of pre-code horror comics often have a strong bias against slabbing their comics, because they wish to read the stories and savor the interior art. So CGC census figures probably underrepresent PCH comics overall - though maybe not CSS 22, which is an outlier in the sense that it’s the most expensive EC comic that’s fairly easy to find for sale in high grade. Based on my perusal of ads in RBCC fanzines from the mid-70s, at that time, CSS 22 was no more costly than CSS 21 or 23, so I assume that the stiff uptick in collector interest is a pretty recent thing. The conclusion I draw is that forward-thinking collectors and investors could have stockpiled CSS 22 for quite awhile without burdening their budget.
Great post Tom. Good logic there. My thought is that the number of surviving copies of CSS 22 is likely similar to showcase 4 that came out just a few years later in ‘56. Show has just over 600 slabbed and perhaps 1,000 exist today. I’d put css 22 at near or slightly below that number.
Another superb presentation and insightful episode!!!
Thank you, Jerry! Much appreciated.
the x factor is that the kids now days dont read the comics and they dont have the desire to. they dont care or have any vested interest in the characters. they might watch the movies or shows on disney plus but they wont pay the prices of the books that dealers and collectors selling off their collections want. right now its guys selling to each other around the same age gap or the previous gen to the next gen. they have tried gimmicks like using game codes in some books and putting comic characters in some of the video games to get kids/teens interested but it doesnt seem to be working. plus book manipulation is being done to "UP" the grade and hopefully the value of the book. they do things like use chemicals to remove or lighten pen marks. they use light to make the whites of the book stand out more. its not yet classified as restoration but it actually is. any type of manufacturing/manipulation (ing) the condition of a book is restoration. some kids might grow up and remember their dad collecting comics and have memories with that but the other kids that grew up with them are more than likely not going to have that type of memory and wont care about owning a book of new mutant 98 because they watched deadpool in the theater. for comics to survive the prices are going to have to fall way down and people that jumped on the hype are going to have to take a big loss for things to balance out. demand for something is only as good as someone wanting something and actually paying a price for it. if nobody wants a book you have that you say is worth 1 million dollars, its worth nothing.
HI, Tony. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis. I admit that I glossed over future demand for comic books. It's likely worth its own video. With high likelihood, if appeal for a character fails to cross generations (like western stars) then the related comic books will fall. And, I agree that the younger generations (millenial and younger) aren't showing as much interest in comic books as Gen X and older. However, the big comic book characters are still very popular to them, albeit not through comic book consumption but rather through movies, tv shows, video games, etc. The unknown question is when these younger generations get older, and they have money, will they then seek the physical comic books? That's a big and important question. I have my theories :-)
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 there will be that kid that grows up that just has art in his veins and is amazed someone took pen to paper and made something. but the tech kids wont pay the prices that people want for the books. other factors like housing are also coming into play as im sure the people that had been hit by the hurricane dont give one thought to comic books or the characters. holders of the books would like to think the prices will increase but it is unlikely. ive talked to me young family members and none of them are the slightest bit interested in comics and i asked about their friends and the same answer was none of them are interested either. my theory is superheroes will be around but not at the prices people think. plus we have to look at who is propping up the book sales. boomers and gen x and some millenials. once we die off, we wont care how the books are doing.
Thanks, Tony. I appreciate the insight. We'll see what happens. I do think an interesting sub-question is what books will outperform others. For example, I don't see Action 1 or Amazing Fantasy 15 plunging in value. My guess is that the legitimate cream will continue to rise...but the dregs will drop hard.
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 superheroes wont completely die off but like i said, the industry is propped up by boomers/gen x/ and millenials. if i had to put money on it id say something like sonic or sponge bob or something nobody would expect would be the book that rises to the top. like for example i have a tmnt 1 first print. but that book doesnt even get mentioned. not that it bothers me its just a book for a niche market. like only turtle fans want that book. im a turtles fan. but are the kids growing up now going to want it when they become adults? will the turtles even be around when they become adults? ill be dead so i wont care. and the danger zone is the fact that books are getting to the point where the movie and tv industry is dictating what the comics do. comics thrived as a from of their own media and entertainment. now it seems they are reliant on movies and tv to stay relevant. a video game called marvel rivals seems to be popular among the younger crowd, but i dont think that is going to translate to them wanting to own a copy of the first appearance of wolverine. but one day we might find out.
@@tonyhiland-js4dt Thank you, Tony. We'll see. I do think that the TMNT1 is one book that will do o.k. from the more modern era. One of the reasons is low supply. The number of copies is more similar to an early '60s book than most bronze or copper age keys. As you said, we will see.
✌🤘👍 ⚡
Thanks, Geoffrey!
Wow
Great Show! Informative as usual. Looking forward to the next.
Appreciate it, Knives! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Cover price has gone up since covid! What do you mean their price is crashing??? You don't even mention variant covers. Those are gimmicks, what do you mean they don't do gimmicks any more???
Hi Skully. I am not sure what you mean that cover price had gone up since the Covid bubble? Can you provide some more detail? I agree with you that the variant covers of today are certainly gimmicky.
Thanks Keston! Hope to see you at Heroes in 2025! Happy New Year!
Hi Bry! Thanks so much. Happy new year to you. I hope that I can attend heroes too!
Keston, I appreciate the effort you put into making your high quality videos (which is not easy). I enjoy the kind of content you put out because it is very different than many (if not most) comic content providers. I wish you the best in 2025 and I look forward to more interesting videos.
Hi, Tim. Thanks so much. That means a lot. Yeah, these educational videos take a lot of time but I do enjoy making them. I hope you have a great 2025 as well, my friend!
Anyone old enough to remember the Spider-man cartoons on TV? "Spider-man, Spider-man. Does whatever a spider can. Spins a web, any size. Catches thieves, just like flies. Look out! Here comes the Spider-man". Spider sense is tingling when I remember that jingle.
Hi, Horder. Awesome to hear from you. I was too little to experience those shows when they came out but I appreciate the old school shows! Thanks for commenting!
I remember the Spider-Man cartoon! Great memories!
I remember begging Mom for 1 more minute, just 1 more minute.... lol It would come on at the end of the weekly Cub Scout's meeting. A pal, whose home we were in, and I, would be trying to watch it, me hoping the other parents or kids would distract my Mom long enough for it to reach the end before it was time to go. Didn't miss that show!
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 ua-cam.com/video/4jniW--BVyM/v-deo.html
Thanks, Horder. I enjoyed seeing that. Old school, indeed!
I heard a quote from Ed Bolian that describes my collecting goals perfectly. "I want to look like I won the lottery 10 years ago." I love bad condition rare books because a lot of collectors dont like them. Especially if they're raw and/or have a little damage.
Haha. That's a great quote, Brian. Like you, I'm a rarity freak! Happy New Year!
Millenials/Boomers Gen X cannot always tent pole the market- one day they'll literally die out and stay niche like stamp collecting, comic collectors will stay alive they're will still be viewed as valued but not nesserily deemed as demand in the past for popular charters- to grow! Unless well known/Iconic! we need to look at the *long* term future of comics. Gen Alpha would technically be the the next generation in Collectibles, most have no interest in collecting anything physically- maybe the odd exception like sneakers and video games- vinyls- then there is the fact that they don't generally give! af! along with young Gen Z's for the latter.^ Most are interested in instant gratification & they're phones- solely! In the rare exception they might have picked up the interest in Collectibles through older or charterful parents or self derived to like old! stuff! I think comics that are household names will still hold strong & get stronger re nm98 ih181 Spidey in general. But not alot of other characters they're appreciation in market values will lose pop culture interest- & will stay stagnant without constant movies/being incorporated into Gaming like fortnite that stay culturally relevant.
Hi, FCC! Thanks for the thoughtful post. I agree that we have to think generationally, especially if we are looking out to 2050 and beyond. I agree with you that the major keys and characters will likely be o.k., especially the older books. For example, it's hard to imagine Spider-man losing cultural relevancy in 2050. That said, I agree that unless Gen Z gets involved in collectibles in a big way, that the more peripheral characters will fall into obscurity. And, any books that have high numbers of surviving copies likely won't have the collector base to support high prices.
Prediction: Little by little, demand will grow for Golden Age comic books with striking covers that do not depict well-known characters. Furthermore, some specific comics will start to attract attention from the fine-art world. By 2075 there will be some big-dollar Golden Age books that are largely unknown today. (My current candidate for future stardom is Captain Aero issue 22 with that cool Art Deco-flavored cover by L..B. Cole.)
Hi, Tom. Shoot. Just sent a long reply and It was deleted. In short, I think that silver- and golden age books will be fine in 2075. They will benefit from two or three rounds of movies by then. The big characters will continue to be big. I don't think more modern books will fair as well except for the obvious ones like hulk 181, asm 129, tmnt1, and asm 300. Golden age covers -- you know that's my sweet spot :-)...and I hope you are right. Happy New Year, my friend!!
Aaargh, your reply eaten by UA-cam! Been there, done that, bought the T shirt and cursed the Internet. Yes, I agree that the really well-established characters and truly iconic covers will continue to command interest. As you’ve ably demonstrated, the roster of biggest-dollar books has not changed much since the early ‘70s. I’m seeing a lot of room for change in the list of, oh, maybe the 500th through 101st most expensive books.
Great video as always! Never miss one:)
Thanks for the kind words, Drew!! Happy New Year!
Awesome stuff, Keston! Happy new year to you and your family!!
Thank you, Derek! Happy New Year to you, my friend!
Finally, someone other than me who me who thinks a huge factor was covid and stimulus checks. You have no idea how many people I have said that to including people who work in comic shops and they just stair at me like I have two heads.
Glad I could corroborate your story! Haha. Yeah, it’s pretty clear that comic books - like many other collectibles - skyrocketed during the pandemic. Thanks for the comment!
Great topic. Thanks for the info. Happy New Year, Keston
Thanks, Chris. Happy New Year to you!
Great video! Happy New Year!🎉
Thank you, VV. Happy New Years to you!
Great post Keston loved this one. Even the point of showing not all grades are priced the same like that .5 Superman #1. That Superman #1 .5 on the left looks like chop suey and the right side I would pay a big premium also on that one when the cover looks like a 6-7.0 it looks gorgeous despite the back missing. The one on Hakes .5 this year went for 88k I believe? If that other .5 that you showed was up for auction I wouldn’t bet against it going for double the Hakes copy. Due to it looking incredible. Happy New Year all the best to 2025 Keston
Thanks for the great commentary, Kryptonite! Happy New Year to you, my friend!
Question Keston. If a .5 brittle pages went for 88k would you think the .5 gorgeous cover copy should get 150k-200k due to the cover being a saying 6-7.0…
Very interesting video Keston, yes rusty staples and faded covers have both always been a BIG NO NO for me, I can live with brittle pages if the book justifies it due to its rareness etc. thanks for sharing the vid Keston
Thanks Cap. You are the advanced collector I’m speaking of :-). I sold a ‘Tec 1 from my collection bc of slightly brittle pages. That was dumb in retrospect. That book in any condition is worth keeping!
Do you mind me asking if your wealth for these comics self derived? Or did some how fall into it & or come from an afluent family in order to afford your mega keys.@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842
Excellent video Keston.
Much thanks, Omega!!
Hi Keaton
Hi, Raleigh!
Just got my 1st comic 3 days ago not here yet now I'm here
Congrats! I hope it’s the start of a wonderful journey!
@ thank you it’s very fun the numbers of the comics are stuff I don’t get but we’re getting there lol
Detective Comics #13 stands as one of the unsung gems of Platinum and Golden Age comic book collecting. A rare masterpiece, it blends elements of crime, noir, horror, suspense, and hope into a singular, unforgettable work.
Thank you, Perihistoria! I agree, of course :-)
I would like to add. All things are relative! If you are buying $150 books, you are still moving forward and will have plenty to trade eith when the time arrives! Dont be discouraged if you cant afford a $10k+ book. Your books are still just as valid. *Excellent content.
Great comment. Much appreciated. Certainly many fine books to be had for under $1,000.
Her Aunt would have Gone Away. LOL
Hi, Hugo. That meddling Aunt!
I always liked Flessel’s omission of the vertical line on his E for his signature on his signed covers. Nice video Keston and great to see Tom - who seems to have “Jon Gruden” type energy for golden age comics! #8,13,18 are my favorite Pre Bat Flessel cover Tecs and are the only ones I have ever owned - with the 18 the lone one I kept. Early Flessel Sandman covers are stupendous 😊 I have a 46 which doesn’t come around public as often for some reason.
Hi Ben - Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I was pretty caffeinated for the shoot, ha ha. It was an honor and I sure look forward to speaking with you and Keston in the New Year!
Thanks, Ben. Me too re the sweet Flessel sig. I'm looking forward to you meeting Tom.
