Thank you, brother! I believe it was Rick Akers who got me into this book. I had seen it before but hadn't really paid attention to it. It's definitely grown on me.
Exceptional value purchase! This is a great example of finding value that the market does not recognize as a whole, until knowledgeable collectors like yourself exploit such oppertunities . At some point in the not too distant future other OG collectors will find and see such hidden gems like this and start scooping them up. The fact that it cost you 3X the going rate, says the other collectors are already seeing what you are seeing.
Thanks VV. I appreciate the kind words. Even for the "high price" I paid, I do think the book is a good value. However, there's a fine line between thinking I have a discerning eye and hubris :-)
That’s a striking cover, and that copy is amazingly clean overall. The faint brown water stain just about fits the overall color palette, ha ha. I didn’t know anything about the Super Magician title so I went to a couple of online resources and viewed all the covers from this five-year series. I saw numerous covers that I thought were socko stuff, notably the very first issue, Vol. 1 No. 2, illustrated by a fellow named Charles Sultan. I did not check every art credit but did not see anything indicating Al Bare did other covers for the title. I will have to double-check that when I have some time. Also, in case you didn’t see ‘em previously, you might want to look up these three underwater covers - Vol. 1, No. 10; Vol. 2, No. 10; and the final issue of the title, Vol. 5, No. 8, a fascinating octopus-versus-unconcerned-man piece illustrated by Edd Cartier. As far as your purchase, I would say you have already recouped a decent chunk of your investment in “acquisition thrills” and “pride in ownership.” And because that copy presents so well, I expect you’d be able to get a very good price relative to the grade, were you to sell. The pedigree is icing on the cake.
Hi, Tom! Thanks for the terrific message! Yeah, Super Magician is pretty cool. I'm glad you dove into them. Across the board, the art is dynamic. Regarding Al Bare, you got me curious. I did little digging. It seems his primary contribution was to Shadow Comics. I'd seen many of the covers before but didn't realize it was Al Bare. You can go onto Heritage Auctions and type in Al Bare and see many of them. He's great! Thanks for the tip about the underwater covers. I like Vol 2, No 10 especially. Cool perspective. Thanks for the note about pride of ownership. Of course, I don't want to egregiously overpay for a book, but I prioritize procuring special books for my collection. This is one of those. A book I really like, amazing eye appeal, Mile high...under 2k...I'll take it every day :-)
I’ve been wondering about Super Magician as well, especially the cover with the hooded figure. There are other cool covers as well, and they are very affordable compared to many GA titles.
Very nice! I realize you’re likely to keep it in the current slab, but personally I’d definitely send it in to get that gold label. It would look great! Cheers!
Good taste. That is cool. The title is definitely under-loved. I'm a huge fan of underwater covers. Seven Seas 4, Exciting 60, and Startling 52 are some of my favorites.
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 and Famous Funnies 210 is a nice underwater cover. For some strange reason there's a ton of high grade copies on the census though.
Thank you, MB! It's not looking so good for the girl. Need about 230 likes to save her. Yeah, the Super Magician books definitely have presence. And, they are so much cheaper than most other books that have similarly good cover art.
Thank you, Waz. Yeah, that definitely went into my calculation. Sometimes water staining can really bring down eye appeal and rust the staple. Neither was the case with this book!
Congrats. Very nice! Yeah, Super Magician is not a well known series but the #2 and #5 stand out. #2 is subtle. You have to look at it for a while to understand it. #5 quickly catches the attention :-)
Ryan from automatic comics will say you paid too much cause the data doesn't support it. All jokes aside, Sometimes you have to throw out GPA and just keep bidding to get it, some books are so rare, you have too. WIsh the rest of the comic community would grasp this concept instead of holding GPA to such a end all, be all.
Haha. Thanks Kevn for the input. I'll be curious to see what Ryan thinks. In my mind, if I see an outstanding cover and the Mile High pedigree for under 2k...count me in, every time :-)
I would give you 300 likes if I could. Commenting on the price of your book... For me, FMV matters less for books that I plan on keeping forever. If I think I might try trading or selling the book later on, I won't pay FMV. It has to be under. If I think I'm keeping a particular copy until I'm dead, I don't really care what I pay for it.
Hi Taso, Good to hear from you. Thanks for your comment. I knew not everyone would think this was a great deal. I will say that golden age books have held up remarkably well during the downmarket. Regardless, $1,700 was big money for this book under current market conditions.
@@kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842 as long as you enjoy it, that’s all that matters. Glad you got a book you wanted and happy about the pedigree. All the best Keston!
I think you over paid. It is old and rare but those factors don't always make for a valuable book. The art is just ok. It has a dark cover and the colors don't really pop out much. The drawing of the girl is not that great in my opinion. I would only pay $500 for such a book...
Hi SPR, Thanks for commenting. Appreciate your take on the art. Yeah, the cover is definitely dark and lacks pop. It's one that grew on me as opposed to love at first sight. Hope you have a great day.

Beautiful book ✔️ Awesome cover ✔️ Mile High ✔️ Another great video by Keston ✔️
You all are too kind :-)
Another great video from someone who really loves the art form. 💙
Thank you, Sig Ma. I do really love a great cover!
Of course there’s a Suspense 3 reference in your video, Keston! Hahaha
Hi, Ben. This one came through. Between you and me, we've got Marvel 1, Suspense 3, Cap3, and All Select 1 covered :-)

I could be content with those books 😊
I think that is a very astute buy Keston, congratulations.
Thanks, Cap! I'm happy with it :-)

Heh, heh. Good eye, Rocket!
I’ve been wondering about Super Magician as well, especially the cover with the hooded figure. There are other cool covers as well, and they are very affordable compared to many GA titles.
Yeah, exactly. If I look at a golden age cover and it wows me --- and it only costs hundreds of dollars -- I'm all over it!
Very nice! I realize you’re likely to keep it in the current slab, but personally I’d definitely send it in to get that gold label. It would look great! Cheers!
Hi, Half_a_kman! I hear ya. I do like the gold labels but there's something awesome about the first generation blue CGC slabs that I like :-)
Thinking of re-slabbing to try to get the pedigree label?
Hi Kozy! For the time being, I like it in the old school CGC label. If I ever sell it, which is a big if, I will likely get it re-holdered :-)
If it is an Edgar Church, then this is a great buy! Congratulations!
Appreciate it, PBales. Yeah, it actually does have Edgar Church on the old-school label :-)
Mile high, nice! There's a 2.5 raw on mcs i almost bought a while ago. I love the chick in bondage on the cliff edge.
Thanks, Doc Doom! Yeah, it's a sweet book. I think it was Rick Akers who first exposed me to the book. He's got a nice eye for GGA.
As a collector of pedigree books, I approve! :). Nicely done Keston!
Hi, CBV! That means a lot coming from a fellow pedigree collector!
Great pick up, Keston!
I appreciate it, Derek!
