CX 500. We ride the $400 Maggot.
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
This little bike came to me from my friend Geoff Kann in Seymour, Wi ands it was pretty sad but that was reflected in the price Geoff and I agreed of just $400. The engine was stuck but after a little Marvel Miracle oil it freed off and with just a little more carb and starter work it ran up - smokily at first but this cleared after a few minutes running. This is a short ride out after we had s...
Honda CX 500. Can we save the $400 Maggot?
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Рік тому
This is a bike I bought in Wisconsin last year for just $400 as it was pretty ragged looking very dirty and rusty, but as it was all there I didn't think (but I've been wrong before) I could get my arse kicked. What I didn't know is that the engine was seized from standing in a damp barn or shed for 20 years. The bike shows just 5000 miles but if it won't run its worth what I can get for the pa...
KZ650 exhausts. Replacing shot silencers with new cans
Переглядів 7532 роки тому
This Z650 is a super low-miles bike I found being sold in Pennsylvania a wee while ago. The photos showed the exhaust tips were taped up and when I asked the guy why, he assured me they were solid. They're clearly finished and that's just how it pans out sometimes but now....how do I save the all-important 4-2 config without spending upwards of £1000/$1400. I've had this mod done successfully a...

I've had this bike for some time. It came to me with noisy 4-1 exhaust, the wrong brake calipers fitted to the front discs...(bonkers as they only contacted half the brake pad), the wrong handlebars, no turn signals, pod filters, some home made luggage holders and it hadn't been run for many years. In short it was something of a dog but I thought it would come back to stock.. The handlebars etc...

BMW Broken and seized spark plug extraction?
Переглядів 2352 роки тому
Whilst rebuilding the carbs for this bike I couldn't get past the point that before I could go much further I'd need to extract the spark plug stub, seized into the cylinder head that was probably the reason for the bike to have been laid up originally. Conventional tapered reverse thread stud extractors weren't going to get the piece out-I tried, so here's what worked on this bike and saved th...

Honda CL 350 Scrambler: First start and alloy cleaner test

I've had alloy cleaner on the shelf for some time but have never had the nerve to try in in case it marks chrome or leaves the alloy with a horrible black residue . Honda CL 350 Scrambler recommission: First steps after 25 year layover

This CL was the last of six CL 350s I imported last year and if it shows anything it's that first impressions can maybe be misleading. Honda CL350 Scrambler Clutch problem? Fix it yourself!

This little Honda CL 350 is crazy original - but perhaps originality isn't quite what its supposed to be in every case. Honda CL350/CB350. How to set fuel levels. Repairing a damaged plug thread

      God, yes. If you try to give it a squirt before it's FULLY warmed through it'll just hiccup and cough until you give it some choke. Those little pistons have a BIG lump of metal to warm up. Still one of my favourite bikes. Maybe it is my favourite. Everything else that came afterwards followed this template. Thanks for watching

    I've found a very good example of this bike for 2300 euros in Greece. The only problem is that the electric starter is faulty. I'm worried about the bike's fuel consumption and the availability of spare parts. I would really care for the opinion of other owners

    • @rodcurrieclassics8102
      @rodcurrieclassics8102 2 місяці тому

      The starter motor isn't usually the problem, but the starter clutch. If the motor spins up but only briefly or not at all turns the engine, It'll be the starter clutch. You can buy kits to repair the clutch...though it doesn't always work and a better way to resolve is to buy a used "known good" starter clutch. Fuel consumption will be 45-ish to a gallon so comparable with others bikes of the era. There are LOADS of spares for them as many of the bikes parts are shared with other models. Hope that helps. Rod

      @@rodcurrieclassics8102 Thank you so much for the reply. I bought my first bike in Fall 1987, after spending a vacation riding dirt bikes on the islands of Greece (mostly Paros). It was a 1976 CB500T. I bought it off a guy going through his third divorce. Drinking what seemed to be gallons of warm beer over ice, he told many memorable things to this impressionable lad, such as "marriage is an economic thing." He kept his motorcycles at his father's house, and after a brief tour of his rental property check ins (with rent due in two days, he would pull into the driveways of his rentals, and honk his horn 'to remind them') we arrived at his dad's farm. He owned a dozen or so bikes, and I rode a few, but the only one I was interested in, the only one I had enough money for, was the cb500t. It, apparently, was his "exception" bike. He had many rules for motorcycles, but the cb500t was always the exception. Always buy a repair manual, never cut the wiring harness, never dropped a bike, never leave parked outside..... But, of course, he would then add 'except that bike.'. To be clear, the bike was not in running condition, had been dropped, with one visibly bent fork and cracked primary cover, was parked outside, and the seat had split from rot. The engine did have oil in it, and the pistons were not seized. I paid $150 bucks for it. Over the next few months, I went through all the steps of resurrecting that bike, getting spark, stripping it and painting frame, rebuilt brakes, carbs, wheels, forks, etc. I even made a new seat, stitching it out of sheet leather I had. I drank what was certainly gallons of beer, and broke a few of my girlfriends rules, such as "do not start motorcycle without headers in kitchen." I found out used parts were cheaper at salvage yards when you show up in grease stained clothes. Over the next few years, I rebuilt the top end, the clutch, the transmission which had some sticking and false neutrals from the previous owner drop. The early days of the internet, Usenet rec.motorcycles.repair was extremely useful. Met some great guys at a local bike shop, owner was super kind and helpful, taking care of the things I couldn't do but giving lots of helpful advice for the things I wanted to learn. I rode that bike many 1000s of miles, day long trips into the smoky mountains, and all over the back roads of east TN. Never stranded. The bike got me through college and graduate school as a daily commuter. I sold it in 94 when I moved overseas (with newly married) wife to teach in Central Europe, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Back in the states now. Still married... It is truly an economic thing! I did learn, after the rise of the internet, that the cb500t was a maligned bike. But, similar power and more dependable than it's British inspiration. I think the appearance of the first "superbikes" was part of the reason it got a bad rap. Perhaps I would be dead if I had had enough money to buy a superbike at the age of 22... Anyway, I wish I still had that bike. I'd buy one again if I could find one that hasn't been all chopped up/cafe racered, etc. Honda Reliable, simple enough to work on for the average bear, with enough power and range to learn how to ride without killing yourself. Only two carbs, which was a big plus in my book. Fond memories of a dependable friend. It was a good time and a good life!

      Yeah. My cousin was a dispatcher back in the day and rode several of these to death. He could change an engine on one in an hour or two. I'll probably keep this old girl for myself and I strangely like it. Thanks for watching

      You're too kind Sir so thank you for your comments. BTW I have a Sako .243 for deer stalking . I wanted a 30-06 Mannlicher too as I love the action but haven't found one and I've kinda drifted away from stalking so I'll maybe just keep what I have. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year

      @@rodcurrieclassics8102 Thanks for the reply, I have a Tikka in 25-06 but still find the 243 is my favourite. I don't gp fo the long shots a lot of people do now. 200yds is my max and as you know the 243 will cope if I do my part. Stay well my friend. Frank

    Thanks for publishing this video. I wondered whether there was an effective way to clean the engine covers and end caps on my Suzuki GS750. I have a hard time understanding your Scottish dialect, but the video is great.

      @rodcurrieclassics8102 8 місяців тому

      Hi Daryl. I get them from a business called Old School Covers who operate out of Barnstaple, Devon in the south of England. They're great people and really care about what they do. If you want to get in touch with them you may find them on Ebay...just search for "Z650 seat cover" and they should pop up amongst the choices..otherwise Email me on rodcurrie88@gmail .com and I'll give you their number. Thanks for watching.

    someone I know has this exact bike from new, a few years back he got knocked off it by a car reversing off a driveway so he took the opportunity to rebuild it, professionally resprayed, stove-enamelled frame and parts, anodized bits, stainless steel Allen bolts, every surface machine polished, the engine was shot blasted with coconut shells and then Cerakote'd, new seat cover, grips clock faces, cables, chain & sprockets, you name it he did it, the bike was better than the day he bought it, he still has it as far as I know, he's owned a good few bikes both on & off-road machines, he did own a Norton wasp motocross sidecar outfit which he piloted but always kept the KZ650, he said the engine was the best mid-range machine he ever rode,

      @rodcurrieclassics8102 8 місяців тому

      Yeah they're super bikes and that engine was the basis for so many of their later bikes. It was just so strong they almost doubled the power without beefing it up. Thanks for watching

    Horrible buzz box of a bike, they looked the part but in reality the CB500T was mutton dressed as lamb, no brakes (due to the useless front disc), all revs but no go. A poor oversized version of the much better 450 Black bomber, why Honda decided to stroke a damned good engine to get the extra 50cc eludes me, Honda made a mess of this particular machine.

      Hi there. Wild child CB 450 became pipe and slippers CB500T which was a real shame as the 450 was the bad boy of its day. The CB 750 took all the sales and I remember a CB 450 in Robinsons (Rochdale dealer ) window for months in about 1971. When the 750 came out they couldn't give the 450 away. I have a CL 450 which is still my favourite bike. Thanks for watching

    Had a 1972 CB450 and loved it. When the 500 came out it was shot down by the magazine talking heads, and with less hp and more weight than the 450, maybe rightfully so. Now, both have classical styling and were bullet proof in the day.

    I totally agree with you on the 500T. I’ve got 2 450s and a 500T (No, I don’t have more bikes) and I prefer the 450 in almost any aspect. Although it’s basically the same engine, the character changed significantly IMO as they increased the stroke and added that weird exhaust connector. I’ve been tempted to make changes to the original stock look many, many times but there’s something about the original look. I don’t know but it’s perhaps the first retro bike.

    • @rodcurrieclassics8102
      @rodcurrieclassics8102 11 місяців тому

      Yeah. I didn't like the 500T back in the day as it kinda betrayed the 450 bad boy attitude but now I like them. Maybe because I'm not longer the bad boy either. :0) Thanks for watching and for your comment

    Lovely riding country around there, one of the things I really miss about the UK (I moved to New Zealand in 2004). My kind of bikes too, a nostalgia trip for me as I gave up bikes in NZ, it's mostly Harleys and everyone wants a race, I just can't be arsed with it. I see you got a comment about the riding garb, he should try NZ, shorts, t-shirt and Jandals (flip flops) no gloves is pretty common😄

      Yeah..at one time I'd have been tutting but as long as you ride according to the conditions I think that's fair enough. Fast riding, put the gear on ...grandad smelling the flowers? Jandals etc is fine but its all a choice and oner man's meat etc. Thanks for watching
