How To Live A Rich Life As A Christian With Same-Sex Attraction - Rachel Gilson
Rachel Gilson serves on the leadership team for theological development and culture for Cru, and is the author of Born Again This Way: Coming Out, Coming to Faith and What Comes Next as well as Parenting Without Panic in an LGBT Affirming World: Discipling our Kids with Jesus’ Truth and Love.
I wanted to speak to Rachel after reading some of her brilliant writing about reconciling faithful Christian discipleship with same-sex attraction in a hyper-sexualised society where sexual preference is constantly discussed. I love how Rachel speaks on this topic and feel that she brings an important perspective to the table.
Some highlights from this episode include how Rachel converted to Christianity after being a staunch atheist, how to parent children about LGBT issues, and the helpful and unhelpful ways Christians discuss these sensitive issues.

This is absolutely fantastic. Thankyou. I'm a gay disciple of Christ.
I like everything about Rachel Gilson. Especially her decency and kindness.
This is one of the greatest interviews and testimonies pertaining to the subject of coming out of same-sex attraction/homosexuality. I had never heard of her before. She's absolutely brilliant, and so eloquent in her reasoning; she really dug and gleaned God's wisdom on this, not allowing her own flesh desires to win over ultimate Truth. She said so many things that are so chock-full of God's wisdom, I need to watch it again and jot them down, because they're just really helpful for the sake of defending the gospel in general. She's quite an apologetics expert, actually. What a gem to stumble upon! I pray this gets more views and that many people who struggle with that will be saved by Jesus! Glory to God - may this be an instrument to bring more lost sheep into the fold of our loving Father 🙏 Also, you are a fantastic listener - you allowed her to talk, and listened intently without interrupting.👍
Thank you so much for your kind comment, and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Rachel’s work is a gift that keeps on giving!
Thank you for this! This is ALL GOLD! There's no fluff here!
It’s wild that people can be so thoughtful and critical about concepts, without applying that same rigor to their own belief in a massively warped mythology. You don’t need to feel dissonance about being homosexual just because one ancient mythological text implied that you shouldn’t be homosexual. It said a lot of things that Christians largely ignore. Oh yeah, and it’s just mythology.
Obviously belief in Jesus Christ is a precursor to applying the principles in this episode
I heard Bro Dalton's talk from Ensign college and it changed my life! I have been teaching this to everyone I can. And love that I found this to be reminded and taught further.
I thank you both for this episode. I'm a parent to neurodiverse kiddos, two of whom are teenagers who identify at LGBTQ+. As such, they refuse to join us at church. However, I've been trying to figure out how to still draw them to Christ. While one has bitter anger towards God and anything dealing with religion, the other actually likes to have religious discussions from time to time and feels drawn to God. Unfortunately, she doesn't feel safe at our church and is put off by mainstream Christianity. I'm trying to help them grow where they are, and while the understanding shared I think is beyond where they are now, I'll have to give these books a read for further wisdom into how to draw them to Christ wherever they are at.
Thank you for sharing this, and thank you for your sincere efforts to draw your kids to God. Maybe you could reach out to Rachel and share this with her? I’m sure in her campus ministries she has spoken to so many people similar to both you and your children! Wishing you a very merry Christmas!
Inspired!
Great interview with a faithful, interesting and lovely person on an important topic. Thank you!
Thank you for this! A tenured parent of 27 years, and this is so helpful and gentle and encouraging. Thank you both for your wisdom and vulnerability.
Beautifully articulated, Rachel! Thank you for being simultaneously eloquent and plain in your experience.
I love and admire Rachel’s eloquence
Excellent interview - I do think it's interesting that the Restored Gospel and eternal marriage helps to resolve some of these issues much better than mainstream Christianity.
Totally agree, but her point on not making marriage an idol and extolling a righteous singlehood I found really enriching.
The explanation of setting someone up to believe false things / creating the problem is spot on. Great interview.
Thanks Spencer, I’m glad you thought so!
Rachel’s so intelligent and courageous, I really enjoyed this deep philosophical discussion. It can feel very lonely when your single, but focusing on Christ has comforted me thru the bad days
Watch the movie from a last days perspective. After all we are latter-day saints aren't we?
The book of Mormon teaches that anything that persuade us to do good is of God. If we have an impulse, an inkling, or any thought of something we should do that is good, you can know it is of God.
Although I don't experience same-sex attraction, I have found the principles that Rachel shares - of aligning our desires with God, transparency with Him, and the joy of precise obedience - to be so helpful in my faith journey.
This podcast with brother Dalton is one of the best I have ever heard. I am 85 years old. For about 65 years I have been trying to figure this out. THis throws amazing light On the process of receiving revelation from the Holy Ghost. May God bless you you’re helping so many people
I’m so glad it helped!!
This was excellent. Thanks for putting this interview together!
Thank you for watching!
So glad I watched this video. I am certainly going to look for this. I am wondering if these cultures make accepting the restored gospel a bit easier. Here in the US when you tell someone that God and his Son appeared to Joseph Smith. Then later the original apostles appeared restoring the priesthood. The reaction is typically divisive I have had visions and dreams. Very few few and far between, but I do not talk about it as people will immediately think I need professional help and medication.
Yes I agree with you. I appeared on a podcast recently which will air in February in which I felt to share about a vision I had once. I wonder how people will respond
Many in the church will be open to it. Especially if they have experienced something similar. However there will be others....
Bro Watson's story regarding his conundrum with the sister missionaries reminded me of my own experience. Many years ago I was able to serve a two week mission in the Columbus Ohio mission. They were going to be down one sister as one was returning home and another was not due for two weeks. A senior couple labouring in our tiny branch recommended me to the mission president. I was told that if I was unable to fill in as a full time missionary for two weeks the remaining sister would have to live in the mission home during that time. I was unable to go on a formal mission due to family disapproval and lack of funding. But this was wonderful way to get a small taste of missionary life.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I ask my wife to listen 👂 very carefuly
It's really wonderful .thanks for this
I loved being taught by Brother Dalton. Thank you!
❤congratulations to all members in Pakistan...it seemed impossible before that Pakistanis will accept the gospel of Jesus Christ but it turned out to be of great success..indeed nothing is impossible with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ...wonderful..
Mad respect for replying and liking every single comment
Love to chat to people listening!
Name one Saints??
Thank you for this video. I needed to hear this message. ❤
"Now my brethren, we see that God is mindful of every people, whatsoever land they may be in; yea, he numbereth his people, and his bowels of mercy are over all the earth. Now this is my joy, and my great thanksgiving; yea, and I will give thanks unto my God forever." (Alma 26:37) Congrats! How exciting to hear such fresh and vibrant testimonies of converts to Christ! Living pioneers!😀💖
Wow! I’m not on social media, so I had no idea about this talented artist! Thanks for the interview!
Wonderful! Good examples for grandparents too. Many thanks for this message and the examples. Thank you.
I disagree. Curate instead of disallow entirely. But if you can't curate what they are exposed to and help them interpret it... then delay until you can. But oversheltering them into isolation, isn't preparation or teaching them wise habits of self awareness. Racial identity? Did he really say that? Narcissism is pride... a substitute for an identity as a child of God and it disconnects into delusion instead of connecting to male people better. There is so much of pride we can avoid by centering our identity in Christ and family and as human with true empathy. Racial and ethnic identity are too easily hijacked by narcissism into evil abuses and dehumanizing (yes their is a trigger word for some.being conditioned into hate right now), dehumanizing or... de-empathozing or losing charity for other children of God. Love your enemies. Be in the world but strong enough to still follow Christ, not isolationist in pride. Narcissism is a counterfeit of love and is the polar opposite of charity. It is the antichrist opposite of the love Christ has for these people around us. This video is horrible advice. Teach Christ. Not this philosophy. Needs work. Try again.
I loved this episode - it also helped me with my Christmas shopping for a family member who I know will also love these stories.
Love it! Thank you!
Excellent advice
I love the faith that our brothers from Pakistan have. They really embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for sharing your testimony with us. ❤ I'm eternally grateful for The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Same as you I testify this Church is true.
I love it when I discover something new and amazing and beautiful. I used to live in France and loved the religious art, stateues, and architecture. It is so wonderful to see LDS art also done in this unique way. I can't wait to get my copy of the book.
I am from the United States. I live in Sequim, Washington near Seattle. I am so touched by the dedication of these good people of Pakistan. It is inspiring and proves the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days is true and is covering the earth. Keep up the good work. You inspire me! ❤
My sister is currently serving in the Everett mission! Looks like a beautiful part of America

I am from Brazil and its Nice to see a vibrant church members from around the world...bless Pakistan
So glad he missed his meeting for this interview- this was such good advice on parenting with Christlike principles. ❤
it's so inspiring learn about the saints in Pakistan... thank you for this video... pioneers are still on trek in many parts of this wonderful world... may the Lord bless of all you
Thank you for the interview and subject. This will definitely help me in my parenting.
Sounds like his wife was an excellent example of being a caring person... That made me sink, that advice BUT IT INITIATED CHANGE FOR HIM....being a father myself We men are extremely Impatient and need to love more than discipline
Yes, in many ways a harsh truth can be the most caring thing to share. Great point
I hope you enjoyed this and took something away!
Ben, thank you for highlighting these stories of faith throughout the world. It's great to hear the stories of faithful Latter-day Saints throughout the world.❤
Amazing
