    Thank you for this! I tried watching some of the user-submitted videos for the LED bulbs on Amazon and, to be nice, they were incredibly frustrating. They gave no rationale for cutting wires, some not even explaining (wtf) a ballast is, and just assumed I knew how to do this. Some suggested soldering..I don't have one of those tools. I had 0 confidence in doing this "easy installation" the product boasts...blindly cutting wires that at some point would be hot and potentially burn down my house. I was ready to just go with a fluorescent bulb when I decided to YT search it and saw your video. Your video not only discusses its purpose and setup, you show how easy it is using simple terms and straight-forward guidance. Thank you! I now know why the ballast isn't necessary, how to safely rewire everything, and why plug and play isn't always the answer. Solid instructional video! You gained a subscriber.

      The LVP is actually water tight, so water shouldn't get below the surface unless there is a severe flood. In that case, it would be bad no matter what flooring you have.

    Very detailed! I only wish your garage opening was the same as mine. Your floor drops off right where the garage door closes. So it’s easy to know where to stop painting. My garage floor extends out past the closed door. So your options are: 1. Paint to where the floor ends, which would be outside the door by 4-5 inches. IMO this wouldn’t look right. 2. Close the garage door and paint a line up to the door. I believe this is the method I used in the past. The paint goes down with some give so you can cut in a straight enough line without getting any on the bottom of the garage door. 3. Put painters tape down in a straight line. Using a laser to help guide the placement of the tape is best, or if you don’t have a laser then use the closed garage door. Make markings where the door rests then extend tape touching the marked lines. Brush up to or a little over the painters tape.

    • @buildsbymaz
      @buildsbymaz 3 дні тому

      I would use option 3. Painters tape will give you a nice and crisp line right where the floor meets the garage door.

    Completed my build yesterday and I'm a big fan of this video. It was a lot of help. Here are a few lessons learned. This took me much longer than I thought it would. Probably spent a solid 12-14 hours not including the time I spent painting a few pipes (For your reference, my skill set and experience with DIY is quite a lot, but I am a perfectionist). Instead of painting all pipes black, I bought black pipe insulation for all pipes that wouldn't be covered by the side and back padding. This resulted in me only needing to paint 3 pipes and back 4 corner fittings (I have a 10' wide enclosure; thus, this would be different for 12' wide... assuming 6 pipes and 6 back fittings depending on how long you cut your back pipes). The reason I did this is that I will have kids and their friends playing, thus I wanted some type of insulation on every pipe possible. I also found that the vinyl padding on the back sides and top was not sufficient to my liking. Balls could and will find ways to go out the back as the pads were "relatively loose" to the side and top duck material... Maybe this was due to me not installing it correctly... not sure. So, I doubled up on it. What I mean is that I created another layer of insulation (same size as other 5" cuts) and stuffed them in the sides and top between the enclosure and initial vinyl wrapped insulation. This created a very tight fitting between the vinyl insulation and duck fabric. Lastly, instead of using rope string on the side, I was able to use bungies around the front pole. It helped that my side fabric length wrapped perfectly around the pole. Though, this resulted in me running out of bungies, so I did one side with bungies and the other side with the string method as it is not exposed and sitting up close to a wall. Additionally, due to lack of bungies, I used zip ties on a few gromets. Overall, I am really happy with the build. Thanks again Maz! Final cost was $840ish. I did get fabric on sale, but did buy extra vinyl fabric and a slightly larger (extra cost here was marginal) foam mattress. I borrowed pipe cutter from my dad, so saved me approximately $16 there.

    • @buildsbymaz
      @buildsbymaz 4 дні тому

      Thanks for your thorough comment on your experience with the build! I do occasionally have balls slip past the pads along the edges too - maybe I will add some more padding behind them like you did. Really glad to hear everything worked out for you.

    Can you cut the top outermost pipe in the middle and connect it to a T joint so you could add a pipe for a projector?

    • @buildsbymaz
      @buildsbymaz 4 дні тому

      I think you could, and I actually thought about doing that. I was going to use a T joint on the top back EMT (right above the screen) and use an EMT coming straight back and resting on top of the top outer EMT, and continuing out a few feet towards the hitting mat and mounting a projector to that. I was just worried the projector would be too heavy and there would be a sag in the middle, but I'm not sure if that would be the case or not.

  • @bradmiller-c6z
    @bradmiller-c6z 5 днів тому

    Hey brother....awesome video. I just need a little explanation on the EMT dimensions. You say they only come in 10' widths. You are right because that is all I see at HD and Lowes. You say your build is 12' wide. How did you get there? Buy six 10' and cut each one to 6' and then have six 4' of scrap leftover? Also......you said, your enclosure needs to be 3" bigger than your impact screen......so, 1.5" on each side for a total of 3"s? Sorry, one more question and this is just for the width......if my impact screen is 10'x10', my enclosure should be 10'3"?.....can I just buy three 10' EMT's. cut them to 5' and then not stick them all the way flush into the middle spacer to get that 3" total I need, tighten them down with the screws to get that width of 10'3' for the enclosure.

    • @buildsbymaz
      @buildsbymaz 4 дні тому

      Hey yes you are exactly right, I used six pipes and cut each to 6 feet with 4 feet leftover on each. Also correct about 1.5 inches extra on either side. There is also a little bit of space built in with the connector pieces, so if you have a 10 foot EMT with a corner connector on either end, it may already be very close to 10'3". In your situation I would try to avoid cutting the pipe into two 5' sections, if possible.

    If you are looking to bypass the ballast and switch to LEDs, you'll need Type B LED tubes like mentioned... BUT I don't know if all of the type B's are made for ballast bypass? I have direct replacement and plug and play bulbs i just bought which I don't believe will work since it needs to say ballast bypass on the packaging. I may just end up buying a new ballast because it seems that the majority of the LED bulbs are made for direct replacement or plug and play which won't work with the ballast bypass?

    • @buildsbymaz
      @buildsbymaz 5 днів тому

      Type B LEDs are specifically designed for ballast bypass - I would definitely recommend using a type B and removing your ballast rather than buying a new ballast. That way you save money and it will be more efficient.

    For those who do not know. You grind so that the epoxy application is able to grab it to the substrate. If you dont do this step, you will have temporary positive results. Since you are saving money by dyi. Dont skip the steps. And a extra layer if protection to avoid the hot tire issue. Buy some of those heavy duty gtm mats. Rubber ones and place them where your tires are when parked inside. Its a cheap way to protect all that work.

    I'm about going crazy trying to find a replacement ballast. Then, I found your video. I'm going to try this. Thanks for being so informative & concise! (A few hours later.....) Back from the second home depot visit with what I needed. I was so happy to cut that ballast out of that fixture! Did the wiring as you directed. Installed the bulbs and "ta daa"! I've fallen off a log with more difficulty. Only thing I could add was that when I was installing the lights, I had a stripe down the bottom side of the bulbs. This was because I wanted to position the colour light button towards me to adjust it. Once adjusted, I realized I might be able to turn the bulb around by removing it and while keeping it in the same direction, just rotate it on the pins. After doing that, we got more light in the colour we wanted. A "Thank You" hardly seems enough! Here's the icing on the cake. The fixture was half the price of a new ballast!

    Phenomenal video. You absolutely clarified several things for me that were left out of a lot of the videos that I have watched. Great job!

    Thanks so much for the great video, short and to the point. I had replaced the old bulbs in my wife’s office a few years ago and installed newer ballasts for the LED lights. I was note aware they had improved and created an even more efficient bulb eliminating the ballast. You pointed out how to identify and rewire the old light. Very helpful for the DIY folks.

    WOW best golf simulator build i've seen....and down to every detail. Not only it is cost effective, but it is a nice looking setup. This will be my model when i finally decide to build mine. Ohhh, first thing i researched after watching this, is how much those grommet kit costs LOL

      Thanks for the support! The grommet tool was definitely the star of the build and not very expensive.

      I would not use this over a wood floor.

    How far is it from where you hit your ball from to the base of the impact screen?

    Excellent..but I didnt catch why not too good use a extra lay of clearcoat....why? Thanks!

      The clear coat can turn yellow over time with sunlight exposure, unless you get an expensive one. It just wasn't worth the cost to me.

    Maz- I applied grommets to the black duck canvas, as I was completing that process it was getting more difficult to compress the grommet and cutting the fabric out of the center. I returned that tool to Amazon and purchased a new one. I'll update on the success of that one when I receive it.

    • @buildsbymaz
      @buildsbymaz 11 днів тому

      Sorry to hear that. Maybe the tool you got was defective or not as sharp as it should've been - Hope the new one works for you.

    Maz - bought the same screen. The same grommet set from amazon. I don't know if mine is defective but my grommet tool will not cut the hole and the grommet will not crimp on itself. The impact screen seems so durable that the grommet will not penetrate the screen. Any ideas what to do next? great video by the way.

      Have you tested the grommet tool on other materials to make sure it works properly? I had to really squeeze down when putting holes into the impact screen because it is pretty thick.

      There weren't any baseboards to begin with, so I did add them after the flooring was finished.

    You'll want to put the cleear sealer on this because the vinyl chips will get dirty.

    I am really interested in building a simulator identical to your and I’m struggling to pull the trigger. I was wondering if you can send a list of all of the items you purchased for yours so I can price it out in todays prices. You did a great DIY video and I appreciate people like you that take the time to help others that are like minded.

      I have links to everything listed in the video description! Hopefully prices should be very similar to what I have in the video.
