Beautiful beast he caught! Just know that not all, in fact most, monster fish are never even weighed officially so that they can be touted as “Certified State Records”. If you wanna see pics of GIANT Flathead Catfish, visit “Jakes Corner Store” store about 20 miles North/North West of Roosevelt Lake, when headed towards Payson, AZ. You’ll see pictures hanging on the walls of many “State Records”! A store/restaurant called “The Butcher Hook”, in Tonto Basin, AZ used to have some old pics of giant Catfish as well. I grew up near there and I would bet anything on the fact that Roosevelt Lake and the Salt River Junction hold the biggest Flatheads in the entire state of AZ!! Maybe the biggest in the entire southwest!

Pro tip: for people that live in States like Illinois where live bait is not allowed use Berkley gulp alive 4 inch minnows in the black shad color pattern. And use just a little bit of weight no more than an ounce and let it drift in the current of the river and the combination of the scent dispersing from the Berkley gulp alive minnow and the movement of the Berkley gulp alive minnow in the current will trick flathead catfish into biting it. They really can't tell the difference that being said I only bother to do this technique when fishing in States where live bait isn't allowed but it's highly effective. And I caught plenty of flatheads doing this exact technique this season across the river in Illinois I'm blessed by the fact that I can choose to fish either side of the river. On one side it's Iowa where I can fish live bait and on the other I have to use these artificially scented Berkley gulp alive 4 inch minnows but fishing in Illinois has it's benefits because there's a lot more secluded areas where there's a lot of cover and structure compared to southeast Iowa.

What bait

I was taught fish the edge of the channels and that rule holds true most of the times I have gone. Lakes are bit different but in the river, edge of the channel is where it's at.

You guys are living my dream. I love watching your videos, especially since most of the spots you hit are 10 to 40 minutes from my house.

I live in Wellsburg, I'm 34. I worked in the tin mill in Weirton, until they decided to shut the entire operation down 8 months ago. I would love to come out with you guys to catch my first flathead . Ive been trying all summer ever single day to the point my wife is pissed. Two on at once! You are the king of anglers! What a great video. Hell, I can't keep the turtles off of my bait long enough to catch a decent flathead. Is it the Santee Cooper rig? Any that I rig with Sunfish end up dead without a tail when I check bait.

I never even knew flathead would eat cut shad. Always been told they would only eat live bait.

Hi - great channel! I’ve been bank fishing flatties most of my adult life and recently got a boat. This opened up a whole new world for me. I primarily fish the PA schuylkill river. Any tips on rigs? What is your setup for throwing from a boat?

I wish they put a size cap on catfish… I’d rather eat the ones that aren’t huge it’s important to put big ones like this back to breed the next generation of river monsters lol

By the way, if you catch it a catfish like that, you’re gonna have to hold it in the mouth and yes, they will bite you so I recommend wearing gloves
