Great to see you well enough to post some action Joe, keep heeling, get home and get better bud! Laughed pretty hard at the multiple chompings you endured in the livewell, that fish was an absolute beast!
I think it’s cool that you can tell, just by the bite, what catfish it is. A blue usually slams it. A Flathead is usually a subtle rod bend. And a channel is kind of a hybrid of the other two.
@@hammer-downcatfishingwithj7223 stay positive brother, we will keep sending good vibes your way. Those big flatheads will be there waiting on you. Hope to see you back on the water after you get better.
I live in Wellsburg, WV probably 10 minutes up the road from here. Always heard there were giants by the dam I'm going tonight with some bluegill and liver hoping I get a nice fatty. Thanks for the video.
Very very nice flat head congratulations. You guys with your friendship with each other is how it ought to be. Best on UA-cam thanks for sharing your video gentleman. 💯
Beautiful beast he caught! Just know that not all, in fact most, monster fish are never even weighed officially so that they can be touted as “Certified State Records”. If you wanna see pics of GIANT Flathead Catfish, visit “Jakes Corner Store” store about 20 miles North/North West of Roosevelt Lake, when headed towards Payson, AZ. You’ll see pictures hanging on the walls of many “State Records”! A store/restaurant called “The Butcher Hook”, in Tonto Basin, AZ used to have some old pics of giant Catfish as well. I grew up near there and I would bet anything on the fact that Roosevelt Lake and the Salt River Junction hold the biggest Flatheads in the entire state of AZ!! Maybe the biggest in the entire southwest!
Joey, I heard about you from my friend Tim Smith. The Texas catfish family is praying for your recovery and I hope to meet you one day. Absolutely love the flathead vids. I've been a blue cat guy here in the Dallas area for the past couple of years but I'm going to target the Opp's this summer. Thanks for the content and keep it up man!
I put in the time to get a couple these rare fish. Holding them in the water & them swimming away is what I remember most of the fish. It is an experience of nature and a mutal friendship in a way he knows you let him live. Im really starting to care for these fish a lot. I caught a baby flathead the other day about 14".. he was so cute & so strong. Awesome little guy he seemed real cheerful 😂❤
The guy with the hellcat green rod. Made it look so easy with that topical flathead bite. Reeled down and stuck his ass. 💪🏼 I always have problems when I reel too early. Do you think it’s just small fish? Great video by the way. Bruisers.
First of all, thanks for watching! It's definitely a timing thing, and also, I've noticed it matters which direction they're swimming. Definitely could be small fish also. Honestly, I try really hard to be patient and let the rod load up to a certain point before I touch the reel. It greatly improves my hook up ratio.
Great idea saving these videos for winter, man. I love watching them even tho flatheads are the last thing on my mind right now. Do you have enough content to make a video on catching bait in our area? I’m sure you don’t want to give away secret bait spots but as my wife and I only make a couple flathead trips per year (we live in johnstown pa) that’s the hardest part for us. I usually end up taking trout and live/cut ‘gills from around here and I feel we’d do much better if I could figure out how to get shad and/or mooneye quickly before a trip
Sweet fish. But my pet peeve is why so many rods out? Less is more. Line tangling, weavin around bunch of rods. Sheesh. Have a clear fighting area. 4 rods would catch the same amount of fish.
Thanks! And I hear ya. All depends on where/what I'm fishing and how much bait is on the boat. I like a little extra chaos, I guess... Thanks for watching

How’d you pick your spot? Ledge and a deep hole?
The big fish came off of wood cover at the base of a ledge
It looked like there was a small hook in his lower lip when you were reviving him. Did you see that?
I definitely missed that unfortunately. I'll have to go back and check out the video. Typically, I'll pull any old hooks I see.

How do you catch mooneyes
I typically fish mealworms about 18" under a bobber, below dams, current seams, creeks, and discharges
