Expat Finds Dream Home in Portugal
The Portuguese countryside stretched before my eyes without obstruction. As I breathed in the fresh air and took in the scenery uninterrupted by buildings, noise or distraction, I thought to myself - have I found my dream home?
After months of research and countless video calls with local property agents, I found myself standing on a patch of wild land in rural Portugal, where ancient olive trees blossomed, ready for harvest, and the morning mist clung to distant hills.
This wasn't just about buying land - it was about designing the next chapter of my life. The ruin that stood before me told stories through its weathered stone walls that ran parallel with abandoned grape terraces. Nature had slowly reclaimed what man had once tamed, creating a perfect blank slate for my vision of self-sufficiency and solitude.
Walking the boundary of what could become my future home, I felt that familiar surge of excitement I used to get landing in Bangkok or wandering through Vietnamese markets or temples of India. But this was different. This wasn't just another stamp in my passport - this was the potential to lay down my roots and build my dream lifestyle.
The local village, barely visible from my vantage point, offered exactly what I'd been seeking: authenticity untouched by time. Here, elderly men still gathered in the town square to play cards, and women shared recipes passed down through generations. No McDonalds, no Starbucks, no Tesco Express - just Portugal in its purest form.

Southeast Asia or Rural Europe - Where For a Better Life?
Переглядів 1,7 тис.14 днів тому
#thailandexpat #brokenbritain #seasia So, the decision I had to make was: Can I see myself living long-term in Southeast Asia, somewhere like Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, or Malaysia, or should I explore rural Europe, somewhere like France, Spain, or Portugal? Over the last two decades, I have spent many years living and travelling throughout Asia, and it's a continent I hold close to my heart...

#thailandexpat #brokenbritain #bangkoktravelvlog After spending the last three years living in Thailand, people thought I was crazy for returning to the U.K. and I'd be inclined to agree. I was getting comments like... "Why leave a country with such great weather?" "Why leave a country that offers such an amazing lifestyle?" "Why leave a country you loved and seemed so happy in?" But the majori...

#brokenbritain #freedomlifestyle #ukinflation Britain is broken, and this is how I'm planning my escape for a better life. They say that when you're bored of London, you're bored of life. Personally, I just became tired of the day-to-day grind that London imposed upon me. Don't get me wrong, London is an amazing city; actually, let me rephrase that, London was an amazing city. But times change,...

Times change, people change, and Thailand has most definitely changed. None more than since lockdown. In this video, I detail what it's really like in Thailand in 2024. Why ruin your dream move to Thailand by making the same mistakes I see so many people making. And it is nearly always men making these mistakes. www.damianking.co.uk

So you’re going to be an immigrant in Portugal. Best of luck.
best of luck
You seem to have such a clear vision of where you’re going in life. That’s something I want to work on more.
Thank you. But let me be very clear on one thing. My clear vision comes from getting it wrong and making many mistakes along the way.
I'm really glad you've found what you've been looking for. Portugal is an awesome country. All the Portuguese people I've met in London and when I went to Braga in Portugal a few years ago are friendly and chilled people. Best of luck with the continuation of your journey.
Thank you. I found Portugal to be a beautiful country with friendly people. Sadly very disappointing food and local produce
Very jealous, looks like a hidden spot of wilderness.
Such a stunning location
I'm not British so could someone please enlighten me how its so easy to get into and stay in the UK? I have an American passport and I can't stay more than 6 months unless I pay like 2 million to 'invest' in the UK. Seems super hard to get in as far as I can tell. The one time I visited I thought I was going to get denied because I didn't have a bank statement printed out that showed I could afford to visit.
Dude, you have opened the hornets nest 😂. I wrote a detailed reply to you and then deleted it as I don’t want my channel to get striked. It’s a hot topic at the moment.
@@mrdamiankinglol oh yeah you’re right my bad. I’ll delete it. Good call.
No need to delete it. I’m just not commenting myself 😁
Or you could rent an apartment in the heart of the city with a rooftop and then put a greenhouse on the roof and order organic wild blueberries and such delivered to your door by Amazon. Or, Thailand has great nature as well, isn't the beach only about 2 hours drive from Bangkok? Maybe even closer for Kuala Lumpur.
What a bang on the money video 👏👏👏👏👏

You should buy up the world's stock in mirrors mate!
Yeah - 'blame the migrants' 😅😅😅
You missed out a key word in your comment “illegal”. There’s huge difference. Thanks for misquoting me
@mrdamianking No misquote - If you quote you use " not ' I posted MY interpretation - please learn better English. Calling refugees "illegal" is irrelavent. There is no Visa system for refugees. The Only way for them is to land first and apply after. I'm surprised you don't know that. We don't know how many of the 45k a year ' boat people' are genuine because the last Government failed to process them. Instead they put them in Hotels at huge Expense and then Blamed the migrants for the cost. Meanwhile they issued Visas for 700,000 + migrants to come to work and study, which is a net benefit to the economy. You are being lied to. Yes there are pressures on society from migration - they need to be publicised and managed properly - that is the Job of Government.
Shit weather, anti male , no fun ...
NIMBY@S and TAX has ruined UK....

There’s no such thing as an expat. We’re immigrants, just like everyone else. The term expat has nothing to do with duration of stay. Every white person on the planet living overseas refers to themselves as an expat. The vast majority of brown people are called immigrants. No matter how long they are there. Expat is a colonial/racist term that is meant to make people feel interesting and superior. we should discontinue using it.
Incorrect Sir! An expat typically is someone who lives outside their home country for a period of time. An immigrant is someone that moves to another country to live permanently. So no, we aren’t all immigrants!
@ incorrect sir. The term has nothing to do with duration. Every white person that lives overseas refers to themselves as expats. They think it’s sexy. The vast majority of brown people are referred to as immigrants. Expat is a colonialist/racist descriptor that we should stop using.
Well said, Portugal is still nice, good luck
Very interesting and found you by accident. I left 10 years ago and i cant fo back thats for sure as i don't recognize the Country that educated me and gave me my skills that have taken me around the World. 4 years in New Zealand but thats very much like the USA and 24 hours away from Europe. Met a French lady there and now 6 years in France. Good luck.
Glad you liked the video. Drove through France a few weeks ago. I was amazed by the beautiful countryside. Normandy was amazing. Where abouts in France are you based?
@mrdamianking We're in the South Mayenne in the Pays de Loire not far from Le Mans, Rennes, Angers and Nantes on the coast.
Another YT snowflake who's so immature he has to delete any comments that contradict his bigoted mindset. What a weak-minded tool.
I'm a similar age and lived overseas for the past 19 years - Singapore, Edinburgh, Kyiv, Montignac, Phuket, Southern Spain & Dubai. Now finally content in Russia because of it's leadership, politics, family values, food & rich culture, hands down it's a win!!. A close alternative is Muscat Oman or Tbilisi Georgia (providing they stay away from the EU & Nato)
That’s a fair few places you’ve been to Craig. Russia? I certainly wasn’t expecting that! But, I’m also not surprised. The strong leadership is something most of Europe is sadly lacking, especially the U.K. unlike most of the U.K. mainstream media I’m not anti Russia, But I couldn’t imagine living there.. for the same reason I can’t stand Phuket. I’m sure you know what I’m pertaining to. Are you British? If so, what have been your biggest challenges since moving to Russia?
@@mrdamianking Yes British/Scottish. Biggest challenge is the language, apart from that it's a breath of fresh air with absolutely stunning nature. Exactly same thought regarding Phuket and Thailand in general, at best 3 week holiday is where it should be left at
I personally don't like tropical climates. I would miss the seasons, like you mentioned. I would like to leave the UK, but I would go no further than Europe. The U.S. of A. Initially sounds good, because of it's size and the small communication problem. But it's full of Americans.😂😅
Are you considering leaving?
@mrdamianking I am in a situation where I own part of a property, but can't sell it. But, at a later date I would like to live somewhere mountainous and forested, but within relatively easy reach of a town. Probably Bulgaria or Slovenia? But I would need to recce' them first.
You were not an EXPAT you were a British IMMIGRANT!!!
Someone needs to meditate 😂
The people making all the nasty comments about the UK are just losers. The kind you can find anywhere in the world. The UK, even with a horrible labour government is still the best country in the world. By far. I couldn't even imagine why anyone would choose a place like Vietnam over the UK.
A bit harsh isn’t it? Because someone has a different opinion to you makes them a loser? Your comment says a lot about you.
@@mrdamianking You are not the best at getting a point are you. The losers are the ones making nasty comments about the UK. They don't simply have a different opinion.
I would love to learn how to make money online. Im 40 and the ilder i get the more i cant stand the 9 to 5. I make good money now but i just want the freedom of not having to deal with people lol
One of the reasons I set my online business up. Less people to deal with = less of a headache
@ any ideas where I should start?
B2B direct service. Solve someone’s problem and make their life easier. Then charge for it. Forget Forex, passive income, and 4 hour work week type schemes. I provide effective marketing solutions to financial institutions - Brokers, wealth management etc. by using my service they don’t have to hire a marketing team. It’s a no brainer for them. Being a remote consultant is the future. Just pick an industry that you know and can add value. Get a website sorted, branding etc and reach out to clients. If you need any help with that, message me and I can point you in the right direction. Hope that helps 👍🏻

I recon me and my wife are very lucky, we have lived in Thailand for 4/5 months per year since 1993 and returning to my beloved Yorkshire countryside in April. I am 72 years young and me and my wife have had an amazing life,we just feel upset of how what’s happening to the U.K. and the future of are young people. Writing this at the side of the pool in Khao Lak.
Sounds like you’ve struck the right balance. The best of both worlds. Long my it continue 👍🏻
Europe....too fkn COLD. Not good for golf mate....
I make you right mate 👍🏻
I tried the Netherlands for 2 years very disappointing meeting a young Scottish guy in the Netherlands who spoke French fluently with family in France he went to live in France. After graduating from university for free in Scotland. Greetings from the Philippines it will be my third month in a row here usually before only 30 days
I love the Netherlands but hear many report that they are facing the same issues as the U.K. enjoy the Philippines, brother.
@mrdamianking thanks bro. Yea. High rents. A digital jail. High taxes. Xenophobia. Immigration issues. Money focused culture. Demographic collapse. Dating difficulties. Hard making friends. Low value language investment. Drivers licence not globally recognised. Etc etc. The main good is the cycling and marriage law from what I can see.
The UK is finished. Tens of thousands of illegal male migrants are put into hotels paid for my UK taxpayers with spiraling debt which will be paid for my youth. Pensioners are treated appallingly. I am old enough to remember how nice the Uk was in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The only hope is REFORM.
Great video mate. I'm a little late to the party but everything is still relevant and resonates deeply with me. I left the UK and work online as well
Thanks mate, where are you based?
@mrdamianking full time travelling through Latin America at the moment. Wanna travel a few years before putting down roots
I lived in London on and off from ‘93 to ‘95. Loved it to bits. Made some great friends too. London in summer was magical.
I spent most of my adult life in London. It was a great place. Very few cities compare. Sadly that’s not the case these days.
@@mrdamiankingI’m genuinely sorry to hear that. I’ve only got great memories of the UK including the whole Brit Pop era, etc. Back in late ‘95 I had visa problems and had to return to Australia. It was the worst “wrench” of my life. Sad to hear it’s worse for wear now. I’m in Phuket atm, and still love it, but the crowds, pollution and overdevelopment are slowly ruining the place - not to mention all the visa bureaucracy and newly “proposed” tax bs. Getting hard to know where to go next? Aus is SUPER expensive too, almost zero rental vacancies and it’s become very hard on low income earners like myself. Unlike Thailand, Australia stupidly let foreign investment decimate the housing market. Some OS individuals buying up multiple properties at a time. I disagree with many Thai policies, but that is one smart move IMO.
His views are so so true. Especially the part about countryside taking over which the government now planning more houses to be built in green zone.
Your commentary is full of Reform UK talking points and Rogan crap. You seriously need to grow up, kid. You weren't an ex-pat you were an immigrant bringing your own values and lifestyle to Thailand. Hypocrisy is off the scale here. Did you approve of roaming gangs terrorising refugees in hotels? Two tier me arse!
Bad day at the office Alan 🤣.
Go live chiang mai if the heat is to much.San kamphaeng i lived for a year.Sadly i had to leave for family reasons.
Chiang Mai is the one place I’ve never really gravitated to. I spent a fair bit of time there but never really fell in love with the place. Admittedly there’s some beautiful nature there. I might give it another go. Anywhere outside of Old Town and Nimmerman you’d recommend?

I’ll take a look. Thanks
Well said that man. I lived here in LOS since 2014. I married settled and am really happy. I live on my army pension and war pension. My expenses are under $350 a month, the wife nips to the market and comes home with delicious food for under 15GBP a day. I am disabled (ex-army) and now have been fighting cancer fror 3 years. Luckily, I had the foresight to get the right visa, work permit, pay tax and social here. Had three major operations, 24 weeks of chemo and endless medications and hospital visits. All paid for from the Thai social. The Vetreans UK got involved, asked me to come home.......To what, a long wait to see a doctor or hospital, no chance of social housing and potentially living with neighbours I fought against. They did add, you can claim all sorts of benefits immediately! but money isnt everything. I'll take my chance, waking up each day in my beautiful home, sunshine and clean air. Say hello to neighbours and take walks on the beach. I feel gutted the UK is now a bog of hell......Thanks for you blog, reminding me to be greatful, for I have the world.
The very best of luck. Stay strong brother 👍🏻
Sorry to hear what you have gone through. Wish you luck.
You talk a lot of sense. 👍
Thanks bro 👍🏻
I spent some 3 years in Asia between Thailand and Taiwan. Then spent near four years in Bratislava, Slovakia, followed by three in a small town in the Basque country. Despite holding Muang Thai so dear I felt I had to propel myself onward lest i regret staying, ironically my biggest regret over the years was not settling in Thailand and reaping the satisfaction of being so embedded in a place it becomes you. But really I don't regret seeking the nature of Europe, just regret leaving people behind if anything.
Sounds like you’ve had a great time. I loved Northern Spain. But I’m missing Thailand big time. Best of luck for the future 👍🏻
It’s the same as the uk. Worse in fact. Except the weather
I love to live as a tourist in Thailand, but I wouldn't want to live here all year. Living like a king for up to a month when it's winter back home in Norway, is all I want. Usually feel ready to get back on the grind after that amount of time, to be honest. I've had friends who moved to SEA and wouldn't shut up about it. They all came back. Many people would do anything for the opportunity to live and work in the West. I think we shouldn't be so ungrateful all the time.
People always want what they haven’t got, I guess.
Absolutely ANYWHERE would provide a better future than remaining in the UK. Unless it dramatically changes direction. Unfortunately It wont occur fast enough.
Inclined to agree
I got out 9y ago for the same reasons, after the 2015 Asian trade embargo, now youve had all the covid nonsence, the great reset? Constent messing with visa rules, and with tensions rising, east & west i can see a lynching coming for westerners, never the twain ? Wef=rich countries will become poor & poor countries rich, when the sht hits the fan, your better of in your own country, its a bit like getting married- for better for worse 😅 dont believe any off it though, its all an illusion, the world is being turned into a prison planet, as the elite's want it back ! Whens the last time you took your super car for a spin in the UK ?
Great video. I feel like I am in the exact same place at the moment. Gran Canaria is somewhere you might want to check out - it is high on my list and looks incredible.
Glad you liked the video. I’ve been to Gran Canaria many times in my youth get years. Best of luck in your endeavours
If I had the money it would be rural France especially the alps and the other place would be rural Bulgaria and lastly Japan but in the countryside. After 70 you realise you come to this world alone and no matter where you live you will die alone. Thinking about the past worrying about the future you fail to live in the present.
Rural France is lovely. You’re also right about being present. All the best 👍🏻
I love this video! I am in the same position. I lived in South America for a few years and now I am in South East Asia. I am about to return to the UK to take time to decide. Travelling around constantly can get draining, it feels nice to have roots and a forever home. I was thinking of Portugal also. I have a similar dream to live in a rural area with land and nature all around me. Organic food, a peaceful life, a flower garden.... but the question is where? sometimes having so many options creates more stress and over-thinking. I hope you find your forever home where you can enjoy a beautiful life in nature. Amazing video!
I’m glad you liked the video. I agree travelling can get tiring, although first world problems, right. The best of luck with your plans. Exciting times!
I feel the same way and I live across the Atlantic. It's amazing how much things have declined in the past 10-15 years. I will stay in Phuket and travel home to visit. Life is not the same at "home".
Dip in and out. Best of both worlds. Enjoy Thailand. I love the place.
