This drawing shows the process of drawing Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States, with pen and ink on Ampersand Claybord. Drawing is 11 x 14 inches and drawn with dip pens using Higgens Black Magic India ink on Ampersand Claybord. I used my normal style of line work (the style of a wood engraving) but used some influences by Franklin Booth. I've been having fun and expanding my personal style lately, most notably with linework that I call "jazz line."
Jazz lines are much the same as the way jazz musician follow a general structure of a song but are free to improvise within that structure. They don't know exactly what notes they will play each time they play the song. With jazz line, I can make lines (marks) any way that comes to me and the only rule is that I have to end up with the correct values to represent the shapes and lighting. So far I have been surprising myself with new and interesting ways of making lines.

That's a broad question. My style in based on wood engravings, so you could look at wood engravings to see how I create the look of my lines. I work on Ampersand Clayboard, which is a type of scratchboard. I do pen and ink drawings on Ampersand Clayboard and my line work has the appearance of a wood engraving.

i showed this to my students, they asked how long it took you to carve the linoleum?
I don't keep an accurate account of my time, but it's safe to say that the carving of the plate alone took over 100 hours.

This was an great process to watch. I used a scratch boards a way back in college and university, only once or twice and it was cool. It was fun to see the negative space and silhouette look of this drawing. Great detail in the leaves and background. The human face was spot on.

It's black India ink. I use standard scratchboard knives. A lot of artist use X-acto knives.

I plan on doing more process drawings on this channel, so please check back. I don't think anyone would watch the whole process. Even a small drawing like this can take 8 or more hours. I spend 2 to 3 hours just doing the rough sketches on location. The pen and ink for a 7 x 5 will take 4 to 8 hours. If you really want to get carried away with detail, much more than 8 hours. What I didn't show in this video, is that some of these small drawing turn into large linocut prints later.
