5 Interesting and Complex Wines A Costco Wine
Tom, I enjoyed two of the wines on your list recently. Marietta ORV & Villa Sparina Gavi. Both ~$15 and both solid picks. Thanks for the recs.
Thanks for the comments on the French wine pricing. They sold too many tickets for the tasting in NY, sad. Let us know others that drop in price.
Thanks for the great report on these wines. Hope you make it to New York, I am heading to Trader Joes for the Barbara!
Thanks Tom for your hard work. 2023 was supposed to have been an excellent vintage in Cali. Will you be tasting any of those this year as some begin to be released?
Tom Trump is just using the tariffs as a threat the French Government will fold they always have always will. Tariffs aren’t the threat that a collapsing Chinese economy will be. I expect z China to find out they are in FO part of the FAFO stage. The question is can Trump undo the crazy damage Biden has done with Ukraine forcing Russia into the arms of the CCP giving them dependable access to oil. It’s all complicated but I expect a crash in Burgandy from China pressures more than tariff pressure.
There has to be a reckoning soon in the wine industry. Wine sales in the US were down around 6% in 2024 compared to 2023, which was already a down year. While every category of alcoholic beverages, except pre-mixed RTDs, saw a decline in sales in 2024, wine by far had the largest decline. Perhaps bringing back wine coolers could be a use for some of the excess wine. During the mid to late 80s, wine coolers made up 20% of all the wine sold in the US. Congress pretty much killed that category in 1991 when they quintupled the excise tax on wine and producers changed to malt-based beverages. If wine coolers could be taxed at a lower rate to make them more price competitive there may be a market for them again. Non-alcoholic beer, sprits, and wine have tripled in sales in the last five years, so that does appear to be a growth area. Beer especially seems able to be made in a non-alcoholic version that still tastes similar to the real thing. Creating a decent non-alcoholic wine seems to be harder to achieve. As for tariffs on imported wine, that is wait and see. Trump appears to be targeting China, Mexico, and Canada right now with his tariff plan, which shouldn't really affect wine imports. Although with Trump you don't really know week to week what may change.
Thanks for presenting the insight! After the bad vintage of 2021, I bought quite a few thousands$ of 2022 futures, because of the 'lower' future prices of 2023, I did it again. Stupid me, I guess.
Hi Tom - Great video as always, thank you. Did you buy any wine in the ‘23 futures? If so, what wines?
@@coryz6880 So far I haven’t purchased any 2023’s but I am waiting for deliver of 10 six packs of 2022s. At my age putting wines down for ten years leaves in my eighties doesn’t make sense.
@ completely understand. Thank you for your response. I did not buy into the ‘22 futures, but did so heavily for ‘23. For consumption only, as I am not a wine investor.
My only regret in my chateau tour des termes 2022 is the alcohol level 14 deg. I prefer red wines at 12.5 to 13 deg. They hammer less the head.
Tom, thank you for all the efforts you made towards this trip. I am looking forward for your next videos.
Here in France,i bought saint estephe en primeur, 24 bottles vintage 2022, cru bourgeois (not grand cru). Chateau tour des termes. I am very glad i bought for around 20 eur per bottle. This is not for investing,it is for drinking within the next 15 years. With great vintage 2022 specially in saint estephe, the cru bourgeois seemed to me a great deal due to affordable price point, as i don t plan to resell. I will open my first bottle in 2029 most probably. Only then i will appreciate the quality of this vintage.
Appreciate your sacrifice tasting wonderful wines for us.
no one wants to pay inflated prices for old grape juice.
Tom, I just found your channel and checked out some of your videos. You are putting out a wide range of good stuff! Cheers.
Nizza Barberas are indeed something special...
Whiskey distillers have a range of products from daily pours to once a year celebration pours. It's my experience that wineries are either inexpensive brands or luxury brands. A winery should produce both inexpensive and luxury products so that people who buy the daily pours can aspire to the luxury brands from the same winery.
Wine is having its Rolex moment.
Hello my Friend, do you have any Australian wine in your cellar? Grange, Hill of Grace, Clonakilla, Australis+++
@@davidbrowne4893 From time to time I taste some Aussie vino but have zero bottles in my cellar. Three decades ago Australian wine had great market penetration but not anymore. The quality is high but there’s too much competition in the market place.
@winemoneysong Cheers 🍷
Are you going to Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux tomorrow in the city? My Brother and I are also going and would love to meet you!!
@@prccap As long as the storm lets me travel Monday, I will be there. Hope to see you there.
@ you are going to the 130 I assume?
@ 1:30 pm is the plan.
@ thank you very much Tom. It was great meeting you today. We have to get together again over some wine
Very excited to hear your thoughts on Bordeaux 2022. I got a small amount of futures targeting value. Bellefonte Belcier, Grand-Puy Ducasse, Branaire-Ducru, and Suduiraut. I saw Suckling made his recent comments, generally saying he still liked the vintage a lot, especially left bank reds, and then did admit some but not all of the wines were too alcoholic/jammy.
Nice video. Would love to go to UGC Chicago on Tuesday, just can’t make it. Nice Josh Raynolds mention. Always enjoyed his writing at IWC with Tanzer, and stuck with him as he joined Vinous.
Oh man. I'm really excited to hear your report when you get back from NY and hopefully will have something first-hand to base my final 2022 futures purchase round on. Thanks, and thanks for your vids!
2022 Branaire Ducru was easily my favorite of the day. I ordered 12 more when I got home
Damn it! I was hoping to become a rich celebrity so I could pretend to be a wine expert by buying a winery and having other people make the wine.
yesterday, I bought 2021 Clinet for $45 at Costco. I know it's a difficult vintage, but never thought the price could be that low. Is it a good buy? Should I add more in my cellar?
@@williamhuang2976 That is a inexpensive price for Clinet (good vintages go for $100 + up) but this is the 2021. My suggestion is to try the bottle you purchased and then decide if you feel there’s value there. The market for the off vintage 2021 is going to be difficult because it is sandwiched between the 2018,2019,2020-2022 and 2023 ( all these are excellent vintages in their own way). The 2021 vintage will sell only at the right price.
@winemoneysong that's a good idea. Thanks!
Praying for your health and family. Really enjoy your content and look forward to more in the future.
Happy New year, thanks for so many good videos in 2024! Nice to se you look healthy! Don't you think there will be many good wines for sale, stocks from the last 6-7 years? I expect to buy good Bordeaux from 18-19-20 for cheap this comming year.
Happy new year! Good to hear your health is getting better. Time to thank for your videos and sharing your knowledge with us. Around two to three years ago, I had about no knowledge about bordeaux wines. But generellay liked the taste. I was never a fan of points. I am so happy having found your channel. Anytime I see a new video I can‘t wait to watch it. Thanks a lot for your content.
Happy new year! Love the videos! Best of health to you in 2025.
happy new year. excited for more videos!!
I dod agree that napa has definitely over priced themselves. Also weird the wineries charge over msrp when you visit and want to buy direct. I will disagree with you regrading champagne. they had absurd price increases but they definitely pulled back pricing when they saw slow down. Even with big brand Dom P decreased prices
Insightful content as always. Another point to consider regarding the incoming Trump administration is immigration policies that could directly affect the labor force for much of the U.S. wine production. Even buying domestic wines might not be a hedge against tariffs if mass deportations occur.
Great point! Some wineries say the majority of their pickers during harvest are illegals. Will all the grapes be picked?
Happy New Year. Glad I have enough stock of all spirits for a few years. 😁
Great video Tommy boy
Happy new Year!!
Happy New Year! Hope you have a good and healthy 2025.
Happy new year, Tom 🎉

Soave rocks for the money. Nice List Merry Christmas 🤶
I just had the OVR Lot 73 last week. I paid $14. Still have a few bottles left. Their 2019 Marietta Cellars Christo Rhone Blend for $20 is really good too. I have several bottles of the 2021 Bedrock Old Vine zin. I paid $22 a bottle.
Can you answer this question, why is it that the faltering wine industry hasn't restorted to clearance pricing for consumers to clear out inventory? If they recognized a critical change was happening and sales were way down, why didn't they slash the prices down to half off or two thirds? Why is the industry not taking on an undercutting strategy to get people to buy again? Plenty of people would still drink quality wines if they were more affordable all of a sudden. Lots of former wine drinkers moved over to other alcoholic beverages because the value was better. I'm one of them, I decided to go with bottles of whiskey instead because they last longer and don't spoil quickly after opening.
@@BigBadJerryRogers Wine companies don’t easily cut prices because that lowers the brand’s image. Young drinkers choose prepared cocktails presently because with wine there are thousands of choices while with liquor there’s whisky, vodka, tequila, gin and brandy. As far as wine drinkers turning to liquor, I doubt that happens on any large scale. Consumers enjoy wine generally with food while liquor drinkers enjoy the alcoholic effect. Those two segments are very different. Still if wine does not sell the prices have to compress to clear the market( economics 101). Companies are quick to rise prices but slow to lower them.
@winemoneysong ok so they would prefer bankruptcy or going into debt rather than risk hurting their image. In that case, I have zero sympathy for them, they're people who have a very high opinion of themselves, so good riddance. I thought you might have more insight for me than that, no offense intended to you, about them but that just confirms what I assumed, they're too entitled and sitting on too high of a horse. People are switching to the prepared cocktails you brought up also because they're a better value as well, more bang for the buck. And as someone who is entrenched in the whiskey community the same way I was in the wine community previously, I can assure you that there's a lot of people who share my sentiment. They want one glass of something, the rest of the bottle will often go to waste because it spoils too fast, and with spirits, that's negated. $40 bottle of whiskey wins over the $40 bottle of wine. Thanks for your reply.
I’m in Oz - the gavi is great value as something quite different; but as it’s Xmas, it’s French fizz - from Lacourte-Godbillol, Clouet and L. Perrier. However, our backup is Fingerlakes fizz, which is just as tasty/conplex and well priced compared to its European grandparents…love the channel - odd how sub numbers are low…they should be in the low hundred k. Happy Xmas 🎅
Argentinian wines as a whole are a fantastic value, the whites have a bigger ,fuller mouthfeel.
That Gavi was part of the wset 2 class that I took
Merry Xmas Tommy Boy!!!
I’ve just discovered your channel recently and have been learning a lot from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Thank you for a great list! Fantastic video.
Love your take on this kind of list, this is what we like!!! Have a great Christmas, thanks for so many good videos in the past year!
This is a fantastic list. Sure, a $100 wine should taste good, but when a person finds wines at a reasonable price that make it even better.
@@czrs85 My thoughts exactly! I taste many expensive wines each year but what excites me the most is tasting wines that offer great value quality/price ratio.
@winemoneysong I'm no wine expert, but I have found plenty of wines under $50 at Costco that I have been more than happy with. Maybe it's not the greatest one ever, but something I can enjoy with my meal or with friends.
Marietta also makes a Christo Rhone Blend for $20 which is better than the NV OVR.
Great list - glad to see it!
