Campfire Omelette by a Waterfall at Winter's End
As the last of the snow melts we headed into the woods for a hike up the brook to a little waterfall which afforded a lovey spot to prepare wood, build a hearth and cook up some Greek potatoes, bacon, asparagus and eggs for a pan-filling omelette with the relaxing sound of the brook and late winter woods.

Grilled Cheese on Campfire in the Snow & Testing Out Firebox Cast Iron
Переглядів 8527 місяців тому
On a beautiful sunny day, we set out through the woods our Altai skis to build a campfire and try out our new Firebox cast-iron pans, baking ciabatta, frying up bacon and making potato chips over the flames for a solid grilled cheese meal. With little to no talking in our videos, we focus on the sights and sounds of nature as we canoe, hike, backpack, ski, snowshoe, camp and inevitably cook, as...

Brewing Camp-Cappuccinos in a Castle on a Firebox

A fine sunny day of our Spanish backpacking adventures finds us exploring one of the beautiful white towns of Andalusia. Old water fountains abound and a Grayl water filter comes in handy to replenish our reserves. As many of such population centres were, its earliest settlement was built on a hillside atop which stands a castle with a commanding vantage point. The massive walled-fortification ...
Winter Campfire Cooking on a Firebox: Western-style Bacon, Potato & Egg Fry-Up

Snow blankets the woods as a few white flakes drift down from above. Deeper into the woods an ideal spot for a winter camp is located near a partially frozen brook. Wood selection gets underway, locating dead-standing trees and the remnants of a trunk of once might tree. A Gransfors Bruks Small Forest axe facilitates wood processing as does a classic Mora knife #3. Once the wood is in chopped d...

Under threatening skies we guide our canoe from the river onto the lake, through cat tails and past towering cliffs of the Canadian Shield. Coffee slowly brews in the kettle as the wind picks up, little gusts buffeting the flame...

Lakeside hills with patches of early fall colours are bathed in morning sunshine and waves gently lap the shoreline. Winter Campuccino on Firebox Ti & Trying out Dune Knife by BeaverCraft

Birchbark flutters in the winter breeze and the snow crunches underfoot as we head to the woods. With a new bushcraft knife in hand to try out, the Dune by BeaverCraft Tools, the trunk of a long-since fallen balsam fir is a good source of dry wood. A few remaining knots put up some resistance but, with a little prying effort, a bundle of tinder is soon in hand. Winter has been mild thus far and...

    Love this, I have just about everything you used for cooking, Scout, fire pot etc. Oh and I absolutely love jamón serrano. Thanks for the video. Is that a Victorinox Swiss Army knife? How did you get it through airport security? Thanks for the video.

      Hi , yes the jamón is really good! 85 mm seems to pass the test (without a locking blade). The one on the video is a Victorinox Evolution. Security confiscated my Swiss Champ (90mm blade) saying that the saw was too long. Spain (Andalucía) is a great place! The people, the culture the languages, the food … Firebox make good quality products. If you can’t make a fire , use the alcohol burner. Have fun cooking outdoors ! Thanks again! Take care 👍

    Reminds me of when I was about 12 or 13 with some of my friends... We would take a can of soup, a can opener, some bread and cheese and small Iron skillet. We would go out in the woods to an old washing machine drum, build a fire in the drum, Punch a hole in the soup cans put them in the coals and make our grilled cheese in the skillet... Nothing like this of course but we had a ball. Good times. Ah that bacon will be perking up the noses of hikers 1/4 mile away and bears 5 miles away... LOL Now that is a grilled cheese supreme...

      Hi Joshua! Great to hear from you! Just released a video from our first outing with the cast iron pans. 'Had a little fun with them in the woods last weekend 😁.. and we were fortunate to still have snow on the grounds but certainly had far less this year than we often do in winter. The oval pan came from a local thrift store many years ago. We bought it to use with our Coleman camp stove and it has become a beloved camp pan. Unfortunately it has no indication of manufacture on it but we have speculated that maybe it is European given the angle of the handle. Regardless, the long handle makes it fantastic for the fire. Hope you and family are all doing great! Thanks for stopping by and cheers! 😊

    I’m interested in what spices you typically take with you on trips. Do you cater your kit for what you’re going to be cooking, or carry a general spice kit. I’ve found Nalgene 1/2, 1, and 2 oz leakproof containers and they’re perfect for spices - a little goes a LONG way, and they save weight when compared to glass, which in general is a material I try to avoid taking into the backcountry. My standard spice kit consists of salt, black pepper, red pepper, tahini, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, brown sugar, and curry. I also pack fresh additives like garlic gloves, ginger root, jalapeño.

    • @KettleCamping
      @KettleCamping 8 місяців тому

      Hi Andrew, We carry salt, black pepper, red pepper, oregano, sugar, and dehydrated salted herbs (herbs salé) as standard issue. A bulb or a few cloves of garlic are pretty standard, too. Other spices tend to vary depending on what we plan to make. When we make up our dehydrated meals for multi-day treks, we vacuum seal the spices in with the meal. Your base kit is sounds great. Do you always keep your spices in Nalgene containers? We have had disappointing experiences with the Nalgene products not sealing well so we have a variety of "salvaged" containers that we use. The little glass jars are mostly when we are within walking distance of home. Glass is certainly not ideal in the backcountry, not the least because of the risk of breakage. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

    • @andymytys
      @andymytys 8 місяців тому

      Their Altai Hok skis are in the “trekking ski” category. They are short and wide, have metal edges and built in climbing skins. The bindings pivot up at the front like cross country skis, but they’re designed to fit whatever boots you choose to wear, like a snowshoe would. Thus, you can stay in one boot for the entire day as you go from ski to Microspikes, to bare boot. They are designed to be a single option that merges the best of snowshoes and skis into one, when the terrain you’re going through isn’t groomed and may not even have developed trails. Being shorter, they are less awkward, for sure. As winters get warmer, with more rain and uneven snow, these skis start to make a lot more sense for the backcountry traveller. Other companies have gotten into the trekking ski game, such as Black Diamond with their GlideLite series.

Wonderful to hear that your wife enjoyed the video as well. Always nice when we can do things as a couple with our beloved. Thanks so much for watching and have a great weekend! Cheers!

    Always enjoy watching you prep food on your camp stoves. I’d almost call that more of a quiche, and it looks absolutely yummy! BUT, I find your choice of the Scout interesting when there are several other more capable and packable options for supporting the Trangia available to you; even your trusty old G2. My go to Trangia support when I’m packing light is a Bushbox UL with honorable mention to the Nano. And both (like the Scout) will also give you a twig fuel option.

      Hi! We actually brought the Nano on our last trip and it is indeed a good support for the Trangia. This trip, our hope was to make a bigger fire to cook over than the Nano allows for. As we only take our backpacks as carry on and the full size Firebox fire sticks are a problem for airport security, we opted to pack the Scout. We took the Trangia as a backup but since we weren’t allowed to make fires (generally very strict regulations and drought conditions) it became our only option to cook over. In the past, we also used the Trangia with merely the Scout cross bars directly on the ground. The fire sticks stuck into the ground like tent pegs close together also work well as a pot stand. For our most recent travels, the Scout was an effective windshield and pot stand for the Trangia and it was a chance to try something a little different. Our preference is always for real wood fires and a variety of other (usually larger and longer! 😁) knives. Knives also pose a big issue traveling within Spain thus only carrying the Victorinox Spartan this time. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment and questions… and for watching! 😊 Cheers!

    Great job using the Scout, Boxpot, and Stone with making a delicate omelette. I could definitely see the challenges you faced in your video. But, challenges are something of what we’ve all faced cooking in the outdoors. I’m sure you’re gonna want to try that omelette again. Eggs necessarily need to cook low and slow. More difficult when dialing in temperature with fire that doesn’t have a “dial”!

    • @KettleCamping
      @KettleCamping 8 місяців тому

      Thank you for the kind words. Challenges are often part of the fun, although they can be more fun in retrospect than in the heat of the action when you just don't know how it is going to pan out. No doubt we will make it again when we are out and about. It is a favourite at home and, as you say, low and slow is key for eggs. Re: lack of a dial - lol - so true. The dimmer was definitely a help with temperature control. Thanks, again. Cheers!

    Another very relaxing video, great camera work, 1:48 the duck pretending to be injured to lead you away from her nest no doubt. great use of the feather sticks to get the fire reborn from the morning ashes, now my grand father would not call them feathers sticks we called the shavins. The roast looked delicious, the whole meal was delicious no doubt.

      Hi! No doubt you see a lot of ducks in your part of the world. She was a stressed mama with us paddling so close. Shavins makes a lot of sense since that is effectively what we're doing to the wood. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers!

    Fantastic video, great food, and beautiful views. The box pot is awesome. I've had mine for a month or so and have been meaning to make a video with it, but haven't done so yet. The Scout is such a fantastic stove too. So simple but a powerhouse. Thanks for sharing. Cheers! ☕
