Climbing Ruin Butte // Sedona, Arizona
I cant tell you how many times I've stood gazing up at Ruin Butte. I'd stare at the cliff bands, ledges and breaks trying to find a way I could climb up to the summit. Google earth wasn't too much of a help. The route is pretty steep. On the phone with Michael a week before, I suggested we tackle Ruin Butte. Michael seemed to like the Idea and knew our friend Eric had summited before. I was excited to hear that Eric would be coming along. Especially to help guide us up without too much route finding. It is called Ruin Butte for a reason. There are several well preserved ruin sites along the base of this butte which we feature at the end of the video. As you climb up there are two class 5 sections. The second class 5 crux is in the Coconino sandstone, and is extremely exposed. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to film too much of this part as I had to put my go pro away to focus on not dying.
The light this morning was stunning and magical. It makes for some great photography and it is when Sedona is at its absolute finest.
Another Sedona summit bagged! It is a great feeling to scratch another summit off the list. Of the top 40 summits in Sedona, I have now summited 28 of them.

Grand Canyon Off Trail // Attempting The Walter Powell Route
Переглядів 761День тому
Here we are on another adventure. This week Michael had the idea to head up to the LCR to attempt the Walter Powell Route down to the Lower Colorado River. After driving for two and a half hours on pavement, and an hour on dirt we arrive at our destination, in the middle of Navajo land on the rim of the LCR. I like so many adventures, am going off minimal sleep. This time only 1 measly hour. I ...
Granite Dells Scramble with Ruins And Ridges // Prescott, Arizona

Today I am meeting up with Luke from Ruins and Ridges. We share the same passion. We love to explore this amazing planet and share it with the world. Today Luke has planned out a fun climbing traverse for us. So we climb a couple unnamed granite peaks with a ridge traverse in the middle. There is so much fun to be had packed in the dells, which doesn't cover a lot of area. Between the scramblin...

After Michael suggested that we do this hike, the week prior I did a little research and looked up some photos of this canyon. It looked unreal and I couldn't believe that such a unique canyon went under my radar. Like many places the photos are nothing like actually going and seeing it with your own eyes. I really was blown away that such an awesome canyon has stayed for the most part unknown....
Hiking the Longest Slot Canyon In the World // Buckskin Gulch

This has been on my list for a while and I am beyond excited to finally hike Buckskin Gulch. Michael and I have been trying to get up here for a couple months but our schedules kept conflicting. So, instead of hiking the canyon without much water and completing the hike in 6 or 7 hours, we got to struggle through the miles of cold water and shadows. On this day the longest slot canyon in the wo...
Mt. Elden Slab Scramble // Flagstaff, Arizona

I've lived so close to Flagstaff my whole life and I am now finally getting around to climbing it! From town the south rock face of Elden has always drawn my attention. I always thought it would be a fun climb. Going in I didn't really know what to expect. I wasn't sure how difficult and steep it would be. I was pleasantly surprised to find that is basically 2000 feet of pure scrambling fun!

Near Lees Ferry at the beginning of the Grand Canyon is a side canyon called Soap Creek. I had never heard of it and didn't really know what to expect. Red Mountain is really something to see. This volcano is one of the oldest in the San Francisco volcano field. Besides being one of the oldest cinder cone volcanos, Red Mountain is probably the most unique. Think that's the first time I have seen you back out of a route. But that route down from the rim on the Walter Powell did look pretty hairy and it looked like there was a whole lot more of it waiting below. So, the salt is what gives the river that milky turquoise color? It's similar looking to glacial runoff. Great video.

With the lack of sleep, the extraordinary morning cold and difficulty of the descent, you still captured the jaw dropping beauty and ruggedness of the landscape, as well as the humbling spatial harmony of the sky and clouds juxtaposed against the spires, clefts and layering of the canyon’s geologic formations. The information on the canyon’s geology, the Hopi traverse of the trail for salt and the amazing and somewhat strange glyphs was a welcome bonus to boot. Glad you had this adventure without any apparent blood letting or serious mishap! Cheers! 👍

Though I can tell that parts of this hike must be tough, especially at 10:26 when you slipped and fell, hope you didn't scrape your bare legs too much on this hike. Great videos. I've been looking for others to do this kind of thing with, especially in Sedona. Would you be open to having others join you on those off trail adventures? I think i can keep up and it would be a great to be with someone knowledgeable about the terrain like yourself.

I am definitely open to having others join me in my off trail adventures. Do you live around the Sedona area?

I thought access was closed. Did you get permission? Are permits required? Did you need them?

Yes, we had permits. You are required to have a guide as well. We were able to go without one. Finding the place is another story lol

Sorry to ruin your day, but Coalmine Canyon is closed to non-Hopi without a guide. Might explain why so few people know about it.

We know. We had a guide set for the day and he had to cancel last minute. We got permission and had permits.
