T4:E3.1 - Essential Bunker Adjustments for Uphill & Downhill Lies
If your ball is not in the bottom of the bunker and you find yourself facing either an uphill or downhill lie, there are a few critical setup and angle of attack adjustments you simply must make to your stock bunker shot if you don't want to skull it into the face of the bunker or pop it straight up into the air. Do this and you'll quickly gain confidence with these relatively common bunker shots.

T2:E7 - The Only Setup Routine You’ll Ever Need - Get It Right Every Time
Very good instructions! Been struggling lately with my setup.
If you listen to this tutorial, and abide by it, you will see pronounced improvement immediately. Once we are prepared to make a quality golf swing, then, and only then, will we meet with success. Excellent teaching, man! I am grateful.
Well done!
I've really enjoyed ur teaching methods...such as "hovering" the club behind the ball...I've noticed the same thing from experience...Your channel is a refreshing break from all of the other people attempting to train...Thank You !
I am a low hp player and I have always hoovered my clubs , even my putter on the long putts. If you do it then you do not have tension on your arms, the speed of the back swing is always the same one and the grip is more relaxed. This coach is one of the few that has ever mentioned something about hoovering the clubs, very good !
I’m working on this. It’s difficult, but my fat shots are fewer and misses are now on the thin side and more playable. I also found it is rounding out my swing and is eliminating the feeling of a steep downswing. Thanks!
Shoulder width or chest width? I don't have the biggest shoulders in the world but true shoulder width feels enormously wide to me. Thanks, great video.
Oh man, this is so helpful. Now I know that I'm right eye dominant and can adjust my putting. Thank you from Massachusetts
Are you going to make more videos? Your content is awesome.
A lot of knowledge in a short video. Well done pro!
Hi, these is great instruction. Are you going to make more video on full swing from set up to impact? I hope you recover from your injury
This is exactly what I was looking for !
Fantastic video, not only this video but all that I have watched so far. Keep up the awesome work!!!!

Awesome video.

I am supposed to stay away from UA-cam videos, but I swear I think this is the issue I've been having. I forgot all about this from my college playing days. Smh
The reason Amateurs under read putts 100% is not because their 1st read is wrong. It is actually spot on. They see the curve, pick the Apex and start it on that. But slope has taken the ball below Apex. Hence, whatever the Apex and start line thereto, the putt line must be double that for downhill and 1.5 times for uphill putts. Cater for ball moving offline even as it is travelling up to vizualised Apex of Putt.
I love this channel
This video has been a game changer for me!!! Thank you so much! I dropped my score 10 points in one weekend!
Hi this is the best thing ever
Very well presented, thanks for the advise.
Thank you @frankmoore1389. I hope this helps in some way and please stay tuned (and subscribe) as we have more content coming later this Summer. Cheers, RJ
Do you address your driver the same way?
Thanks for the comment @jimford3517. In short, yes, you can use this method to determine where to place the tee in relation to your stance (i.e. ball position; refer to time stamp 1:56 to 3:53; and 5:26 to 6:15). But, setup and swing will change with the presence of the tee. For example, stance will widen a bit and secondary spine angle will increase relative to club length and presence of tee (time stamp 6:43 wrt when on a tee); and lead foot might flare out a bit more, personal preference (time stamp 7:40). And, as always, don't forget to hover the club (separate video here ua-cam.com/video/9l29SK-xt58/v-deo.html ). All that said, the swing will definitely be different but that's a whole 'nother set of videos! Stay tuned as we will be addressing all of this in followup videos as we build out our "Topic 5 :: Power Game" playlist. Best, RJ
Well done, you are good in teaching, and i am following you up, dei boss
Thanks, Daniel! I appreciate the feedback. That means a lot to me to be called a good teacher! Stay tuned, more content coming soon. Cheers, RJ
Is there a preference for 56 vs 60 degree wedges and ideal bounce for your sand shots....i have both wedges....but is one better then another....???
Thanks, Tyson. Great question. For me, my go-to is my 58 (your 60) when close to the green, and this is my most lofted wedge. But, an exception might be long bunker shots, where I'll go down to my 55. Also depends on your type of play. If you are mid- to high-handicap, then I'd suggest 56 with a medium bounce. But if you are a lower handicap, then you would likely use a more lofted wedge with relatively low bounce (when close to the green), such as a 58/60 with 4 to 8 degrees of bounce. But, again, when you are in a longer bunker shot, you might go to the lower wedge. And, of course, conditions can impact all this, too! Heck, Lee Trevino would hit 3-irons out of the sands in clinics just to demonstrate the point that you can use different clubs with different technique in the same situation. But, it's about finding what works for YOU. That's the bottom line in golf. Net net, it's good that you have both a 56 and a 60. This allows you to try them both in various situations and conditions so that you know which to use when. You might also want more bounce on the 56 than the 60 just to increase more optionality. Let me know if this helps! Cheers, RJ
Those 97's are fire.
Thanks, Ryan! I can't understate how much this made me smile because my cameraman hates them! He says they are too dark on the screen. ;-) Thank you, RJ
As a a newbie to the game this piece of advice is invaluable as I often struggle with this issue where my hybrid actually catches on take away, this and the video for set up distance will really help me keep up the good work with these great videos
Thank you for the feedback, Joseph. Helping folks in these specific ways is 100% why I wanted to get this content onto UA-cam. So, thank you so much. And, please subscribe and stay tuned as we have more coming this Summer. Also let me know how your game has progressed over the summer. Best, RJ
I just started playing and have watched so many different you tube golfers teaching and yours just make sence and really alot of your coaching styles are so much more comfortable to perform than others.. Thanks for all the great tips/content!!
John, thank you so much. These types of comments mean the world to me. This is why I'm on UA-cam (and it can be very perplexing to figure out this algorithm!). Please do stay in touch and let me know how your game progresses. And, feel free to suggest other areas of the game you'd like to see me cover. Best, RJ
This was great, the part where you held all the clubs together showing the different setups just made it all click!
Thank you, @greyrabbit631. This is so true! I remember learning this for the first time too, and it had the exact same impact on me. Please do subscribe and stay tuned as we have a lot more coming! Best, RJ
Do you use this same setup with driver? Or is this more for iron/hybrid (off the ground) play?
In short, yes, you can use this method to determine where to place the tee in relation to your stance (i.e. ball position; refer to time stamp 1:56 to 3:53; and 5:26 to 6:15). But, setup and swing will change with the presence of the tee. Excellent practical instructions . I do not see coaches teaching like this
Thank you, Vinay. I appreciate the kind words, very much. And, this has been my teaching philosophy for quite some time but it took a long time of trial-and-error to develop. I also was very fortunate to have direct influence and input from PGA Master Professionals, players and other mentors along the way. Please do subscribe so that you can get notified when we release new content (we are shooting a ton more this Summer) and I guess it helps spread the word, too. :) Cheers, RJ
To the point and clear. Thanks
Thank you, Echefula. "To the point and clear" is about as high of praise as I could hope for. So, thank you, again. Stay tuned for more coming! Best, RJ
Are you swinging around the left leg on backswing or on the downswing
Hi Michael... it's definitely on the downswing. But, this setup video is intended to address setup to the ball more so than swing mechanics, which we are in the process of shooting this Summer, so please stay tuned as we will be going deep into dynamic sequencing of the entire golf swing. Best RJ
Brilliant video thanks you
Thank you, Lucas. I'm very proud of my technique and I've seen it work over and over again. I hope you are able to put some of it to work for you personally. Let me know! Best, RJ
Great really works with every club and given me more confidence I actually had 3 pars. Cheers

Great video and. Simple explanation
Thank you, Fred. I appreciate the comment and feedback. "Simple" is music to my ears! It's a complicated sport, so that is high praise, indeed. Thank you. Best, RJ

Thank you, Khaizal. We appreciate the positive feedback and especially appreciate the willingness to share the word with your friends as we grow our new channel. Stay tuned for more! Best, RJ
Hope your Knees heal soon, love your videos..
Thank you, Mike. I waited a long time to get the surgery (three years) but finally bit the bullet earlier this year and I'm already starting my comeback. I was on the range yesterday, first time since surgery, and was feeling great. Stay tuned for more content and, finally, a lot of full swing content. Cheers, RJ
I’d take those swings every day, even with (relatively) healthy knees. ;) Good graphics too. But the little subtleties “more spine tilt” and. “a more around the body swing” are the real gold, over the usual stance and face adjustments. Keep ‘em coming, and good luck with your recovery.
Love your channels format. Short and to the point!!!!!!!! Great job
Thanks, Michele. I appreciate that feedback. We are actually trying to balance the "pace" of the videos with the amount of information I want to impart. It's a trick to get the balance right! Best, RJ
Thanks can’t wait to hit the yard and practice that.
Awesome! I'd love to hear how it goes. It's really helpful when I get confirmation of advancement from viewers, to that's not just an idle invitation. Cheers! RJ
These tips will work..once you master your swing path. I bet most slicers wish it was this easy.
Absolutely, Zeeb! You are spot on and appreciate the viewership. Stay tuned as we are working on a lot of new content for advanced players who know these subtleties. Best, RJ
I see others fall down on this. I’m glad I have mastered the attitude. Now on to the other thousands things I need to learn. Game on.
Love to hear it, Michele. In my opinion (and 40+ years of experience), it all begins with attitude. I appreciate the feedback on this video, in particular. Doesn't seem like many golf channels are covering this topic and that's a shame. Glad it could help. Best, RJ
I hope this pre-shot set up helps with my consistency. I like your video. Direct and to the point. Had a few lessons. With a few different coaches no one showed me this approach. I feel like I wasted my money. I’ll be watching more of your videos.
Wow, this is very high praise, which I appreciate greatly. I've heard many have the same feelings about previous lessons, but it's never a bad idea to get out there with a coach -- and just be patient until you find the right one. They are out there! And, while I don't think anything is a substitute for hands-on, in-person training, I'm more than happy to be your virtual coach at any time! ;-) Glad you are enjoying so much of the content. Warms the heart. Stay tuned, because we have a lot more coming down the pike. Best, RJ p.s. Let me know how the setup and pre-shot routine plays out for you.
Ive watched a few videos on here now trying to get ready for a shotgun tournament for wounded veterans on monday and your tips reall help me more than any other videos so far.. ive not played but about 36 holes total but got some clubs donated to me and trying to look better this year and think i will with these tips..
Thank you, John. This comment means a lot to me. I'm a Certified Adaptive Golf Instructor by the SMGA specifically for helping wounded veterans with their game. I'm certainly honored to be able to help you with your own work and activities with veterans. I'd love to hear back from you on how the tournament went. Of course, I appreciate the kind words for my videos, too. Stay tuned because we have a lot more content coming soon including some specifically designed for players with physical injuries. Best, RJ
@RJ Golf we shot -8 in which the winner got -20 so we got smoked but it was just a fun event and my group of 5 hat 1 man which was our best golfer today was 67yo.. that's absolutely awesome you support us Veterans as the support is dwindling but are still some absolutely awesome people in this world that make our lives more enjoyable and for me it's a day I actually smile and have fun.. Keep up the great work and content boss!!
I was really taking some deep divots and hitting more fatties than I should, until I began Hovering. Thanks for reminding me of this great Nicklaus tip. It does make a difference to strike.
Thanks, Charles. Glad this could serve as a good reminder for you. Btw, in addition to better ball striking, remember this also will reduce tension in the arms and hands for a more consistent and repeatable takeaway. Best, RJ
Robert Pickle: Enjoyed your sharing.
Thanks, Robert. We put a lot in this video, for sure, and I hope it will help you improve your setup. Thank you for being part of our audience and stay tuned for a lot more coming this summer. Best, RJ
Really useful advice. Thank you 😊
Thanks, Mike. Appreciate the positive feedback and hopefully some of this will help you improve your putting. Stay tuned for more coming soon! Cheers, RJ
RJ, does the foot placement change relative to target line with how much you open the face? I.e. if open the clubface more at address, do we open our stance up more?
Thank you for the question, Cole. Short answer... yes, and I certainly do a little myself. However, I don't always do this and I'd consider this a personal preference. It depends on various factors, such as conditions, the lie, slope, etc. but the best thing to do is get out there and try several variations and see what feels best for you. Also remember, the more loft, the more left you have to aim to hit the ball straight. Let me know how it goes. Best, RJ
