Ranting about my Sig Spear-LT accuracy problems (5.56 version)
I had to tear my Sig Spear-LT (5.56 16") rifle down to clean up the barrel and re-torque the screws after having pretty bad luck out at the range with accuracy issues. While I did, I decided to "record" myself rambling to myself about it, often incoherently, and with the camera mostly pointed at my elbow. This video has the most coherent parts of this rant, or at least, is edited in such a way that it kinda makes sense... Please enjoy it, but if you don't, I won't blame you.

    Rapier with flat blades can do cuts but they're not your typical cutting off arms/hands cuts, they're meant to do a cut to the face or arteries when opportunities show up which are still devastating. It looked like you were using too much blade to cut, try using 1-3 inches worth focusing with the tip, you'd be surprised with how well they can cut

    Bought my spear lt for $2500, i did have to tighten the barrel screws, I have an Acog on a unity mount and sighted with an offset RMR along with the Acog. I sighted with some .55gr PMC ammo $0.45 a round around $9 for a box of 20 and $480 for 1000 rounds. Id say thats cheap, with the RMR I was stacking shots at 25 yards, grouping was about .25”-35”. with the Acog at 100 yards I was hitting sub 2 MOA with my best consistent group being 1.5 MOA and worst group being 1.76 MOA. Its sad to see such a great weapon not being made to spec for the price, im lucky nothing is wrong with mine. Hopefully sig fixed the issue asap, theyll most likely just replace the whole barrel and piston system for you

    I find this pretty bizzare. I have a 16'' Spear LT as well, I did a group at 100 yards with cheap PMC bronze ammo, $8.99 for a box of 20. I sighted after only 20 rounds with a TA31 4x ACOG (Chevron reticle) <-which is not the most accurate scope, I was hitting sub a sub 2 MOA group, (1.38 MOA to be exact -1.3'' group-) I just hand tightened the barrel and it barely moves now. Ive been able to hit human sized targets up to 500 yards pretty consistently as well.

    • @jaysblades
      @jaysblades Місяць тому

      Honestly I'm strangely comforted by this info. There aren't a lot of measured group data points out there on the 16" barrel LTs, and the handful I've seen haven't been as positive as yours - so I feel better knowing the platform can do better and isn't inherently flawed. Sounds like they're just hit or miss (🥁) in terms of accuracy. Mine is with Sig now so hopefully they'll straighten it out.

    A quick note/correction on a few things I said in here... 1.) The handguard needs to be adjusted to 45lbs per the manual (I say 40lbs in the video). 2.) When I said "the most expensive by far" I meant compared to the other piston guns I had out the same day as the Spear-LT (I cut about 20 minutes of talk about the other guns I had out since it was too disjointed and unfocused). 3.) I actually had a couple of 4.5" groups with match ammo, but most were exactly 3". 4.) The other handguard screw head stripped out immediately after I finished recording this before I got to 45lbs, so I'll be needing to aquire replacements. 5.) This is easily the worst video I've ever recorded, but I learned a lot for next time and I thought the info might be too useful to scrap it entirely.

      I'm going to say that the Colt 6940 would be a better budget pick and the LMT Estonian rifle would be a better high end pick. I owned a West German SIG P226 and it was an excellent firearm. All the other SIG's I've owned have been trash in comparison and all have been sold and I'll never buy another product from them.

      @@jager6863 Generally agreed. I picked up a brand new Daniel Defense DDM4V7 Pro for $1900 ($600 less than the Spear-LT), it shoots 1.25"-2" groups and seems to be a lot higher quality.

    The gun is probably overgassed if it is recoiling very heavy and had bad trigger slap. The rear sight wobbling would drive me bananas, you could check the accuracy again by wrapping the dust cover ears and sides of the receiver with electric tape, but I don't recommend running that very long.

    I only own 4 European style swords. One of them is the RK Euro model #7. I'm very happy with it. It's one of my favorite swords considering value for dollars. The one I recieved is particularly nice on the QC end and it looks great, to me. I've been incredibly lucky with most of my Ronin Katana purchases. They're not perfect, but for the price I think they're top-notch.

      It has issues with the glass -more distorted when in motion than my other prismatics, but it has a wide FOV and more comparable to a TA31 than any that I've tried, it's insane for an optic I bought for $208 on sale. I generally prefer prismatics to LPVOs purely for weight and rail space since I'm equipping multiple rifles most of the time. Even though it looks huge the Trihawk is about 7 ounces lighter than my HiLux 1-4x LPVO with rings and about 9 ounces lighter than a Sig Tango MSR 1-6x with mount. I'll probably do a review on it at some point. It's a good value but it has tradeoffs

    I very recently got a Vindaaris from DSA. I ordered it from the SBG store to get it sharp without the usual fee. While I was expecting 6-8 weeks for shipment, it was ready in 1. My box was stuffed tightly with packing paper enough to prevent any movement at all within. To my surprise, they added the belt system as well even though I didn't actually order it. Sucks your initial shipment experience was like that, but it's good they put the effort in to take care of you in the aftermath of it.

    Good vid, Jay. Thanks for sharing. My stock, dust cover, foregrip were not that loose, but I also had WICKED trigger slap with mine - and some serious extraction issues as well. I ended up custom-fitting a RAK-1 (which turned out great) - but also installed a KNS Piston (because it was over-gassed AF), polished the (rough) chamber, replaced the extractor spring and threw in a buffer. Now it runs like a sewing machine. This is a good vid to advise folks that this rifle might not be the best for someone who isn't ready to start tinkering a bit to get it to run right/or even be shootable.

      I added an ALG recoil spring and there was a big difference in felt recoil and ejection pattern. I think it must have had the old original tired spring in it from the kit they used to build these guns. Original spring was damn near 2" shorter than the new one! ALWAYS replace all the springs in a milsurp built gun.

    For me as a former infantryman, the Galil is an improved AK platform. I would chose the M16 series where the sights on the receiver is solid and aligned with the barrel for a maximum of 300-250 meters especially on the M16A1. Israeli soldiers are not stupid and have been using M16A1s since after the 1973 Yom Kippur combat action especially their infantry.
