  • One of the longest Jian reproductions on the modern market, this folded and pattern welded Chinese sword is of greatsword length but arming sword weight. In this video, I'll put it through some cutting tests to see how it performs.

Nice pick up J. I have had a Frontier tang dao for over a year now and I love it. It has made a great practice sword and I trimmed up a tree in my back yard and it cuts through small branches like butter. I have always had a thing for polish ak and chinese swords myself.

Long swords/长刀/Changdao were pretty uncommon, especially in eras with heavier armour.
In China, glaives, polearms, pikes, staves, flails & even two-handed sword-maces saw more use than two-handed blades.
That said, after the Han Dynasty, long swords did not exactly die out.
During Sui-Tang Dynasties, there was the infamous 陌刀/modao & 斩马剑/Zhanmajian.
During the Ming Dynasty, the Miaodao was introduced from ōdachi (大太刀) & nodachi recovered/captured/traded from Japanese Wokou/Merchants.
There were even two-handed Jian that survived into the Qing but those became incredibly rare and weren't standard issued by the state.

If I remembered correctly, the Tang-era Modao was viewed as the pinnacle of two-handed sword development in China.
Hopefully, LK Chen could get his hands on one.

@@possumsam2189 Nah, Tang Dynasty was the Golden Age of China, but in terms of technology, Song and Ming blew it out of the water. Miaodao is the pinnacle of 2H Sword Development since it was forged using Chinese sword forging techniques rather than Japanese techniques and through Miaodao a group of Chinese farmers were able to fight off Japanese combat veterans.

this type of blade will also fit a complex side sword/ rapier hilt really well.

I think it's too tall! I have some longswords that are actually almost overlapped a few spots up. For now it's in the umbrella stand with the Lowlander.

do you know why they abandoned the longer swords later on?

Sounds like a practicality thing, happens with nearly all greatsword designs across multiple cultures. They rarely (with few exceptions I'll talk about in a video on the Lowlander) do anything better than either a polearm or conventional sword, plus they're more expensive and difficult to make properly than either of those two options. A bunch of different European and Asian cultures have developed greatswords but they were all fairly short-lived and rarely fielded.
