The Just Able Biker
Приєднався 18 чер 2022
I'm an avid biker with old school values and an insatiable urge to always see what's round the next bend or over the next hill.
Unfortunately, over the last 5 years I've been battling with a neurological disease which over time has reduced the amount of time I can spend in the saddle and also reduced the size of the bike I can ride.
But ride I shall!!!
I'm planning to record as many of my rides and adventures while I can and post them up on UA-cam so I can look back at them when the day finally comes to hang up my leathers for the last time.
Hopefully along the way some viewers may stumble across these videos and get some pleasure from them as well.

Golden Eagles and some other pictures.
I stopped to take some pictures of the mountains and ended up seeing at least one Golden Eagle.

Audio problem solved at last!!

I got really fed up of the poor quality audio on my riding videos. The wind noise kept spoiling some wonderful rides, that's why I haven't done any in a while. I was heading up to the shops yesterday and because it was so warm I wore my open faced helmet. I decided to video the ride and stuff the mic down my neck tube thinking the sound would be hellish, but it was actually better than anything...

Thanks! I've just ordered this rack and this has been super useful 🙂
@@DesmoDreams And thank you for your kind comment. I'm glad the video helped you choose, and fit the rack. My rack still looks brand new, even after being used many times in all sorts of weather. Hopefully yours serves you just as well. Stay safe and have fun. 👍
Where did you buy these pegs? I have been looking online for these wide foot pegs for my 350 Meteor . In Thailand the RE dealers are not interested in looking for accessories and ordering them for you. Where did you buy the pegs?
@@Danny-ux1il I bought mine from Moto GB. They used to be the official importers for Royal Enfield in the UK, but now Enfield imports them themselves. Have you tried eBay? There are a few on sale there from India. There's a guy on Facebook in India called Raju Lax. He is a trusted supplier of Royal Enfield parts to customers on the Royal Enfield owners page. I don't know if he supplies parts to Thailand, but he'd be worth asking. I hope you manage to find what you're looking for, and let me know how you get on. 👍
Very helpful! Thank you! I love how you get right to it. No clutter. (And your video accurately represents the trial-and-error of getting the right drag on the feeler gauge.)
@@edfelton3262 Thank you very much for your kind comment. 👍 I know what you mean about some videos dragging on. "Just a quick video about..." Then 7 minutes into a 10 minute video they actually do something. 🤣 Another thing that annoys me is when they make out the particular job is very simple, when in fact it's fiddly as hell. All that happens then is that someone will try and do it after watching the video then feel inept because they could do it as well as the guy in the video. I started to notice the sneaky editing that cuts out the fiddly bits. I did a video where I fitted the luggage rack and you'd think doing 4 bolts would be easy, but it was a pain in the backside to line everything up, and I even had to tap out the threads to get rid of the old thread lock.
Its MrT would like some info regarding rear carrier the hand grip is it higher than the original as it looks it , could u compare with original and please let me know thanking you much appreciated
I'll check that out later today, or more likely tomorrow, as we're heading up to St Andrews for a day out.
I've been out with the original hand rail and as far as I can see it's got the same rise and width as the luggage rack hand rail. I slid the original one over the seat and it sat nicely over the luggage rack. It looks like Royal Enfield used the same jig and then welded on the extra luggage part. Hope this helps. 👍
Hi, Not seen anything from you for ages. Hope you are as well as you can be. Best wishes.
Thank you very much for your kind comment. 👍 Sorry I haven't posted anything for quite some time, but my health hasn't been great. The fatigue that I get from a combination of my sarcoidosis and the multitude of pills I take has had the better of me since last August. I haven't ridden my bike since then. The doctor has recently changed some of my medications and has referred me to the sleep clinic, so hopefully something positive comes from that, and I'll get back out and about again. 👍😃
Here's hoping things get better. I know only too well what medication can do if your body reacts badly to it.@@the.just.able.biker67
Very helpful video. What a nice simple engine.
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
And thank you for your kind comment. I hope you found my valve check videos useful.
These are compatible for hunter 350 ?
I'd imagine so. They fit the Classic and Meteor, so there's no reason why they shouldn't fit the Hunter. Call your local RE dealer, or contact Hitchcock's for confirmation.
Thanks. Looks easy to do.
Yeah, it was definitely one of the easier jobs I've done on the bike. 👍 I also posted a video about fitting the rear luggage rack. It was a bit more fiddly, but I got there in the end. I've used the luggage rack loads of times, but thankfully I haven't had to use the crash bars!! 🤣
I’ve seen other youtubers use brake cleaner or acetone to clean or soften thread lock (and heat with a flame torch, not appropriate here, obviously). So I was wondering, if I raided my wife’s nail polish remover (30-odd % acetone, apparently) and cotton wool stash, and shoved a good wad into the threaded hole, would that do the trick? I guess a concern would be if it also softened and weakened the new thread lock on the new bolt…
It would certainly be worth a try. I've seen other UA-camrs using nail polish remover as a degreaser before, but not on old thread lock. I would be more inclined to use cotton buds - q-tips in America - for rubbing it into the threads. It might be a pain in the ass to get a jammed wad of cotton wool out of the hole if it gets stuck. If that doesn't work then you could try rubbing alcohol, surgical spirits or IPA. They're all much the same thing I think, but they're pretty much 100% alcohol. In regards to the nail polish remover affecting the new thread lock - I think it would evaporate off fairly quickly, so it shouldn't be a problem. Please let me know how you get on with it. 👍

My wife and I finally made it up to Skye this year after COVID and returned a week ago. These roads are familiar and so are the camper vans 🙁. Many European motorcyclists were about too.
Yeah, there's always a lot of foreign plate bikes up that way. I get really happy when I see folk on bikes that've travelled all the way up to Scotland and the weather is actually nice for them. I was back up on Skye last weekend at a bike rally. The Twisted Pistons have a brilliant rally just over the Skye bridge in Kyleakin. The weather was brilliant all weekend and everybody had a great time. There were quite a few hungover bikers stumbling about the place on Saturday morning.🤣🤣
How did you enjoy your trip? Hopefully you had a good time. 👍 I've still got another couple of videos to upload, but I just haven't had the time.
@@the.just.able.biker67 after the hot spell in Fort William we had very mixed weather in Skye. Fabulous scenery. Lovely boat trip from Elgol. Not a fan of the single track roads though 😂
@@jonathanmellish4439 Elgol is one of my favorite places on Skye. If anyone is ever asking where to go on Skye this is the first place that I tell them. Top tip: The first fortnight in June is usually really good weather up here.
@@the.just.able.biker67 I am enjoying the ones I’ve seen so far. Definitely echo your comments about the fuel. Broadford ran out when we were there. Also every b&b had no vacancies. Glad we booked in February.
5kgs has been written becs for example for load a bag weighing 5 kgs & you hit a bump at the speed of 100kmph, during that impact the weight will increase many times even if for a moment.
I've only used it to put my tent on. Everything else goes in the panniers and a big roll bag on the pillion seat. I can't remember if I mentioned in the video that I'd considered getting the rack that replaced the pillion seat, but decided to go with the rear rack instead because it gives me more room for luggage on the bike.
Personally I just put it in 5th gear and turn it using the rear wheel 😊
I've heard of people doing it that way, but does that not mean you have to keep going back and forward between the engine and the wheel to see when it's at tdc?

I was wondering why you didn't stop to clean it off!!! The fact you were doing 125mph was no surprise, we've all been a mile or two over the limit sometimes. My 1000cc Yamaha Thunderace was terrible for it. Lol

Great stuff. I'd be dosed up on antihistamines with the midges but it's certainly spectacular. Looking forward to the next instalment.
The midges weren't that bad. I only got caught with them twice while I was outside at dusk. They're absolute torture when they do find you!!! 😡🤣 Thanks for watching, I'll have the next instalment out in a day or two. 👍
Had a week on Skye on my pre-unit Bullet 350. Just a perfect bike for the roads up there. Stayed in the campsite just south of Portree. Got ate alive by midges. On the way home stopped for a smoke in Fort William, got captured by a tourist bus full of Indians, all wanting a photie of the bike.
Aye, Royal Enfields do tend to attract a lot of attention. But a bus load of Indian tourists!!! That must've been a great laugh. 👍🤣

It's all metric now. I haven't come across any fasteners that aren't so far.

@@bubot17 It really is a fantastic bike once you get used to a more sedate riding style. I'm just back from a 650 mile week long trip round some of Scotland and I loved every minute of it. I'm currently posting a series of videos of my day out on the Isle of Skye. Part 1 is up, and part 2 will be posted tomorrow.
@@the.just.able.biker67 i'm no stranger to old bikes i still have two 60's bmw, i had an r25 bmw 250 single and i miss the relaxed ride it gave me, the Enfield now with efi and better brakes would be a hoot😊
@bubot17 One of the best bikes I ever owned was a BMW R1150r. The only reason I sold it was because of my ill health. It was a consumate mile muncher, even though it was a naked bike. It was also - like the Enfield- an easy bike to service. I really miss the shaft drive though. That's why I considered a Moto Guzzi V7 for a while, but my budget would've meant I could only afford an ageing example, so I decided to go with a new Classic instead. Chain maintenance is so much easier with a centre stand. Have you managed to test ride one yet?
There's a book written by a ferry inspector about ferrymen in the Western Isles, before bridges replaced the boats. Alarming and hilarious tales of rickety boats and their owners setting out on great expanses of water. It makes you realise how isolated some of those communities were, and how important water transport was to locals and tourists alike. Anyway, a great view of the approaches and nice to see the Good Father thumping away.
Thanks for your kind comment. Father Brown had a great time up north. You're right about the remoteness of the isles, I remember going to visit relatives in Stornoway back in the 70's and it seemed to take forever to get there, so God only knows what it was like before then!!

Many thanks for your kind comment. The 350 would be the perfect bike for riding round the Kent lanes. But not only that it can tour long distances as well. I'm just back from a 650 mile trip up the West Coast of Scotland, then over to the east coast and back home again. Some of the single track roads in the Highlands leave a lot to be desired, but the wee Classic takes them in its stride. 👍
One can use grease to secure the gasket in place .Breather tubes can be left on underside of tank when removing ,as hard to get at. Loosen them from frame clips .

I'm no expert either! 👍🤣 I bought the Akaso hero 6 (I think that's what it's called) and the problem is you can only use the Akaso mic with it. It won't take any other mics. The only solution I've seen is to cut the wires and solder on a better microphone, and that's beyond my skill set just now. I had terrible audio problems in my earlier videos, which is a shame because I went on some lovely rides and they were spoiled by poor audio. I've now got a helmet that seems to work well with the Akaso mic.

Excellent series of videos! Only ones I've seen with useful photos of the breather hose location. I've just done this service item, as the R.E. dealer didn't think it was necessary at 500km! R.E. customer service replied very quickly to my email ,stating of course, that it IS necessary. But I lost all faith in the dealer and thanks to this and other videos on YT, I decided to do it myself. A bit of a pig to disconnect breathers and plugs, and the gasket was very difficult to remove. Lots of silicon used at the factory! Reinstalling the tank was also a pig. I will now take her out and see whether I did the job correctly ,-)
The first time I removed the tank I managed to scratch the frame near the headstock, so from then on I used electrical tape and a cloth on top of that. You also need to be careful that none of the cables and breather pipes get nipped when putting the tank back on. I've heard of folk doing that. I'm going to get a set of right angled screwdrivers from Halfords, so the next time I do it I won't have to put a regular screwdriver in at an angle. I actually googled right angled screwdrivers for a laugh thinking there would be no such thing, but there is!! 👍🤣🤣
@@the.just.able.biker67 Right angled screwdriver to adjust the clearance? Yes that would have been handy. Now I'm obsessed that the engine is more tappity sounding, although runs perfectly well.
@@the.just.able.biker67 I put a tea towel between the tank and frame, and still managed a scratch either side. A touch of Humbrol black enamel needed, and tape over the top for future reference. Right angle screwdrivers are great for tight clearances, like a mini ratchet set. Clean rag either side of the valve lifters ensures the driver head doesn't dance its way into the engine if it lets go. I noticed you disconnected a plug on the right side rear of the rocker cover. Others show the cover being removed and replaced with this plug in place, but it's a tight squeeze. If your gasket sealant was black and blobby, it's almost certainly an assembly "aid", and probably hasn't been off since. Hard to see how anyone could re-fit the rocker cover properly with the gasket partially glued. Either way, when the original gasket gives up the ghost we'd still have to scrape the excess off, so better to clean it first time around. Thanks for the excellent 3 part instruction!
@@tarragonadreamin I wonder if they do them up tight to reduce the tappety noise? New owners, or potential owners might be put off by the noise.
@@the.just.able.biker67 Several people have said this on forums. Set tight at the factory to allow the valves to bed in for the first five hundred km, and this means that they are quieter too. I've readjusted the clearances and I think it's fine now.

Can I ask, do you ever get false neutrals? I have the same bike and every few shifts between 1st and 2nd gear I hit neutral. I get them occasionally between 2nd and 3rd. A couple of times I've had the neutral light on, let the clutch in and it was in gear. The bike has only done 170 miles from new so I'm still running it in. The clutch adjustment seems fine. Wondering if it's something you've come across. Cheers.
I used to hit false neutrals sometimes, so I adjusted the gear lever up a notch and it's a lot better now. I only seem to hit a neutral between first and second if my foot's being a bit lazy. One other thing I've found - and so have others - is if the chain tension is a bit slack it can cause issues with gear changes, and sometimes the bike drops out of 5th into 4th. I hope this helps. 👍
@@the.just.able.biker67 That's brilliant, thank you.
@@borderlands6606 Not a problem. If you think of anything else, just ask. 👍
@@the.just.able.biker67 Will do. Your videos inspired me to get the same bike.
@@borderlands6606 Wow!!! Really? Jeez. I didn't think my videos were anything more than shoddily made light entertainment. Lol I take it because your user name is borderlands that you stay in the Scottish borders? Or at you from the north of England?
Lovely countryside. Is that the way to yer caravan?
It's just a couple of miles up the coast from it. It's a lovely wee part of Scotland. 👍
Nice idea. Thx
It works a treat too. We were on a weeklong 600 mile tour and my backside never got sore once. We even did 200 miles on b-roads in one day, so that was about 6 hours in total we were trundling about on the country lanes heading home.
@@the.just.able.biker67 I‘m thinking of giving my black Honda VB500F a gen-z Long-haired sheepskin hairdo :)
@@banzobeans It definitely makes a difference. I was talking to a guy recently who bought a full sheepskin from Ikea for about £30 and draped it over the seat of his Interceptor and tied it underneath with some string to keep it in place. Both him and his pillion said it made riding long distances a lot better
@@the.just.able.biker67 got the ikea sheepskin ready for a test ride :)
@@banzobeans Keep me informed. 👍
30:14 sheepskin seat show here
Great couple of videos Dougie 👌
Cheers mate. The back roads up there are brilliant. 👍

@@LadyLegz Awwwww, that's the kindest thing you've ever said to me. 🤗🤣
Are you looking in the underwere again duggie
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'd get banned for sure!!
Nice Dougie 👍
It's a pity we didn't get to see any of this while we were away. We rode south through Inverbervie on our way to Arbroath.
@@the.just.able.biker67 I thought Dougie beautiful sites up there to see thank you 👍👍🙏
Fantastic!!
Thank you. 👍 I've got another video from yesterday uploading to UA-cam just now. We're off to see the Scottish Crown Jewels!!
@@the.just.able.biker67 that'll be interesting. I didn't see those when I lived there 😮
