VCF Midwest 2024: Classic Computing in Chicagoland
Vintage Computer Festival Midwest made a massive change for 2024: they moved to a new venue! Can the Schaumburg Convention Center contain this massive mix of retro computer goodness? Join me as I try to cover almost everything at an impossibly huge at VCFMW.
Note: My formatted/timed captions aren't ready yet. I uploaded the script to provide something better than auto-captions but the timing isn't perfect. It'll probably take a day or two to finish up nicer captions. Please forgive the delay; captioning an hour-long video takes many hours of work.

The Apple IIGS Megahertz Myth

I love the Apple IIGS. It’s a great computer, but could it have been greater? The legend goes that Apple purposefully underclocked its CPU during development to avoid competing with the Macintosh. But is this actually true? Join me for a deep dive into the IIGS architecture, the life of the 65816 CPU, and the ghosts of keynotes past. Installing OS/2 on a PS/2 Model 80: 5000 Subscriber Special

I’ve hit 5,000 subscribers, and what better way to celebrate than to install an old operating system on a lumbering battlestation? In a past video I said I’d install IBM’s OS/2 on the PS/2 Model 80 386, and now we’re doing it. How well does it run? Will I learn to love the Workplace Shell? I’m also giving a big channel update about ongoing projects and some of my thoughts about the vintage / re...
Compaq ProLinea 4/33 - Computers of Significant History

1991 was a brutal year for Compaq. Fierce competition in the PC clone market they had created was eating away at their profits. Facing their first quarterly loss, massive layoffs, and the departure of co-founder Rod Canion, Compaq needed something special to turn the company around. That something special was the ProLinea: Compaq's first PC aimed directly at value-conscious customers. Watch to ...

When Garmin Combined a GPS with a PDA: The iQue 3600

Today our phones can guide us to almost any place on Earth. But years before Apple and Google became synonymous with mapping there was another device blazing the trail. What was the first retro or vintage computer you collected? I saved an obsolete PS/2 Model 30 286 from the scrap heap back in 1997, and it changed the course of my computing career. I remember OS/2. I never had the chance to use it myself. I think it's too bad that it failed because it'd be nice to have a viable third option to Windows and Mac.

I’ll never forget my time with the se and se 30. Like you said, it is not nostalgia, not hype, the experience was truly magical for the time. Thank you for making this detailed video, it sparked many forgotten good times moving the mouse to prioritise multitasking of the the program in front and playing the ancient art of war. ❤

The IIgs system looks great, and is easy to upgrade. But a slow cpu, slow graphics, and no ethernet port means that it has little use in the present day. It has Low res graphics and it runs from a floppy disk drive. Truly a relic from the 1980's

These cases were, and still are, amazing. I have a 2006 full tower that I'll never be able to part with. The only downside to using one of these in a modern build, is the airflow, or rather, lack thereof. But, they're perfect for building a period correct PC. In the early 00s I always went with the Antec SX line, because they were solid and affordable ($99-120). The Lian Li cases were just outside my budget, but I certainly coveted them.

I used one of these in my grade 9 "intro to business computing" course! I refused to use any other computer in the lab, had to be this one! Everyone else always complained (in 1998 no less) about the grade nine classes being in the "old" lab filled with 386 pcs, but I genuinely looked forward to sitting at and using this computer every day! It just... always worked! I never seemed to have the same issues with it that everyone else did with all the generic PCs!

I had one of these. Sadly, I binned a lot of my old machines back in the late 90s / early 2000s. The only one that escaped was my IBM PS/2 Model 80, now restored with its original IBM 8513 monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I started out in 1995 or so with OS/2 2.11, and later upgraded to Warp 3 and 4. I brought Warp4 with me when I returned from the 1996 ColoradOS/2 conference. There, I had just spent $1000 on OS/2 stuff when I learnt about rumors that IBM would abandon OS/2. I wasn't very happy about that. My employer was one of Germany's companies that provided programming services to IBM and Siemens customers. Not long after we heard that Deutsche Bank was switching from OS/2 to Windows NT. I was pretty sad, because I LIKED OS/2. At home, I had a multiboot setup with DOS native, Windows 3.1 native, Windows 95/98/ME and OS/2. And when Microsoft introduced Direct X to Windows 95, I really discovered PC gaming, and at some point, I didn't need OS/2 anymore. There was only so much you could do with it (since it wasn't maintained anymore), and I was unhappy that IBM gave it the boot. Even my employer was unhappy and withdrew from IBM and Siemens. The company went bankrupt only a few years later. Thankfully, I got experience with AIX and Solaris there, so after working with some real UNIXes, I finally migrated to Linux at home for the first time in 2004 (after running into a problem with Windows XP). Nowadays, I hardly use Windows anymore. I'm content with my Linux system. When I had my first employment in 1991, my employer back then warned me about IBM, that they would abandon products just when they're successful. He had seen it with IBM Series/1, and I've seen it with OS/2. IBM canned OS/2 just when it started being successful, which is a real, real shame. /rant

Some strong nostalgia here. I too was into BBSs albeit back in the 80s. I was on Compuserve and Dephi in addition to a variety of regional BBSs. It was an exciting time. By 1994 I was into the internet and by the fall of 1995 was already working as a web site developer while in college. Credit to my mother who bought my father and I a TRS-80 Color Computer for Christmas 1981. The rest is history... oh, and my first modem? 300 baud. Continental drift moved faster. ;-)

44:09 Amiga 1.x Workbench! 😍 My 8th grade classroom (sadly not public school) had gotten a C128 by the time I was there. I had an Atari 800XL and many games came on disks you could flip with C64 on one side and XL/XE on the other. Nobody ever used 128 mode 😕 and there was no usage of the computer in class. Just played games during lunch. Never knew why it was there. But in high school there were a few computer lab class rooms. n introduction to computers class was in a room full of IBM PCs (or XTs?). That was public high school. The parochial high school that most of my 8th grade classmates went to (I had enough and rebelled) had Tandy TRS80’s (all in one style so III or IV?) that I saw on the open house tour. So already the public high school was doing better. But for the Computer Science classes that room had Tandy 1000’s. Borland Turbo Pascal! One friend with a C64 was talking about getting an Amiga. A little later I messed with him and said I got a Macintosh but pulled out a McIntosh to eat. I was on local BBS’s and also Delphi and GEnie. I heard about the Amiga history and its ancestral routes with the Atari 8-bits. When the local Macintosh user group and Electronics Boutique (remember that store?!) put on an exhibit at the mall one night (included others like Commodore and Atari too) I saw Dark Castle for the first time. Sears sold a Franklin (?) //c imitation but in black and it never had a good demo. I liked the Apples that I saw that night. And I was unimpressed with the Atari ST. But when someone loaded the Dragon’s Lair demo on the Amiga I melted. Wow!🤯 And the NewTek demo! That settles things. I had to have an Amiga. And honestly all I could afford as a teen was a used 1000 and by the end of October’88 I found one online (Delphi or GEnie) and while we met in person and I paid cash it was still sorta early online shopping. After CBM went bankrupt I bought a Performa 637 from someone I knew who was going PowerPC. And that was my way into the Apple ecosystem. Next a Motorola Starmax 3000 and a USB+firewire card for it. And an accelerator. Then an open box Pismo (the TiBook G4s had come out). An Intel iMac 🖥️ (the first aluminum and glass model) then ‘14 mini and now a Studio. I’d say no looking back but I do seem to subscribe to the retro computer channels) 🤷‍♂️

VCF Midwest was a blast this year, though as with every year I find through other people's post con recaps that I missed a lot of stuff I would have found interesting. I'm sure committing to see everything would require a grueling methodology and would detract from the fun of spontaneous encounters! I've seen some footage of myself across a few videos, but more interesting is you caught the aftermath of one of my favorite moments from the con: at 17:00 you can see the terminal session from when I had been using that Compaq Portable earlier in the day. Your eyes do not deceive you: I dialed into my Linux box back home 500 miles away over the dial-up modem peeking from behind it! The plan was to connect to an IRC channel and post a message, but as you can see I only got as far as typing the first four characters of my username before the connection dropped. As you said, the cellular towers were absolutely hammered, and the con's telephone operator was getting very irritated by having to dial out for me over and over and over again. I took my own photo of the attempt, of course, but it's neat to see someone else caught it.

Gateway Solo 2500 is good as a Windows 9X laptop. Although the Toshiba Satellite Pro 445CDT is better investment. It had Windows 95 OSR2 on it's replaced hard disk drive so I decided to stick a Western Digital Scorpio WD400 on the machine in which I installed Windows 98 First Edition on the machine since it had when I got it 144 MB of RAM and an Intel Pentium MMX clocked at 133 Mhz. Threw quite a bit of Blizzard Entertainment games on it. There is better stuff online anyway. The only other laptop that would have rivaled the Toshiba was the Compaq LTE 5300 with 80 MB of RAM but that one only had an Intel Pentium clocked at 133 Mhz with no MMX and had no USB. At the time I did not even have a PCMCIA CardBus network ethernet card. The Compaq much like the Toshiba you could swap the floppy drive out for a CD-ROM but with the Toshiba you can connect the floppy disk drive as an external drive. The Compaq LTE 5380 as opposed to the Toshiba as well as the Gateway had a 1024x768 TFT LCD Display whereas the Gateway as well as Toshiba had an 800x600 TFT LCD Display. The major drawback with the Compaq LTE 5300 was the most in terms of an operating system that you could run was Microsoft Windows 95. The Toshiba Satellite Pro 445CDT you can go up to Microsoft Windows 98 provided that you have the RAM. I really like the Compaq Armada laptops that not just came with Pentium MMX but also Pentium II processors not just because like with the Compaq LTE 5000 line which came with ESS AudioDrive ES1688 and you also had Armada laptops that had that in addition to having a built in power supply. The Toshiba Satellite Pro 445CDT had Yamaha OPL3-SA Sound Chip. The problem with the Gateway Solo 2500 as opposed to the Gateway Solo 9100 was the limited MS-DOS Mode support only working on Windows 95 OSR2.1 mainly for the fact that the NeoMagic MagicWave 3DX Sound System on that laptop only seemed to work properly on Windows 95 and not Windows 98. You could not properly run MS-DOS 6.22 & Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on the Gateway Solo 2500 whereas the Compaq as well as the Toshiba you were able to. MS-DOS compliant sound hardware is a really big deal. On the Toshiba I ran QUAKE on the WINQUAKE port at 400x300 and it ran a little bit choppy but mostly smooth. Got 17.3 FPS on running DEMO3 on QUAKE’s ‘timedemo’ command from within the console. Tried it on WINQUAKE on DEMO3 at 320x200 and got 26.1 FPS. I ran DEMO3 on QUAKE V1.08 at 320x240 in MS-DOS Mode and got 25.9 FPS. WINQUAKE and GLQuake ports were really a great alternative to playing in MS-DOS. That Chips & Technologies 65554 PCI onboard video chipset on the Toshiba is on par with the Gateway Solo 2500’s NeoMagic MagicGraph128XD especially with both having 2 MB of VRAM. Although I do like the Compaq LTE 5000’s Cirrus Logic GD7543 with it’s 2 MB of VRAM is also not a bad options.
