I've played all of the Sim City games on console and computer, and the SNES version is the only one I've played over and over throughout the years. So simple, so enjoyable.
Yes, the super nintendo version is amazing... and basically unplayable on actual hardware. The save/load bug completely kills the game, and your cities.
The SNES version was my first, but SC2K on Mac was my all-time favorite. It desperately needs a re-release (the DOS-Box port on GOG doesn't really count). I don't want them to change it at all, just remaster the sprite graphics for 4k, reamster the music, and make it playable on modern PCs.
The graphic sets missing on snes for me is very important. And for me the best version is the CD-32, the menus, the 80s urban look, the CD music, the zoom levels, the big image icons... It feels more 80s than the SNES version. I always liked SNES version and the music was a great point to keep you playing, but the graphics were too strange for me and it's too slow to play. You missed the classic DOS version from 1993 (with MT-32 music included), the CD-ROM enhanced 1993 version and the CD-32 version, for me are the best, but I loved your video.
I did mention those versions in passing in the big list of versions, but it's one of those things where I wanted to keep this one a bit snappier than my usual 45 minute long chatfests. Thanks for watching!
My first encounter was with the SNES version, which was a high bar to live up to. Later on I got the Classic branded version for DOS, and was disappointed, not playing it much. I actually have the SNES version loaded on an emulator in my phone right now! I keep a mini bluetooth gamepad in my pocket for slow nights at work. If only it could be updated to have mouse support (the SNES had one later), the other problems could be worked around with emulation.
You know, I'm not sure how well the mouse would work, given the game's controller-centric UI. It'd need more than just remapping the mouse to D-pad inputs. The system is also slow enough that I'm not sure if it'd actually feel any faster. People have tried (and are trying) to add it. But if someone does make it work, I'd love to see it.
I never had an SNES, so for me the one I keep coming back to is the MS-DOS version of SimCity 2000. It was my first SimCity, and the one that got me hooked on it. I did encounter the Mac version of the original at school some time later, but never got into it as much because it was so much more limited. Ditto for the free SimCity Classic Live that existed online for a while. Still, who knows. Maybe I'll find a DOS or Windows version SimCity or SimCity Classic sometime, so I can run it in DOSBox or Wine (I'm on Linux). Plenty of old Windows 3.x and 9x games actually run _better_ in Wine than they did on Windows XP and 7 -- and often better than on 3.x or 9x themselves, since I'm less limited by CPU power, RAM, and crashy OS's. 😎 And the SNES version _does_ look and sound pretty cool. In any case, thanks for a fun retrospective! ❤
My first Sim City on the ZX Spectrum. You are right it was impressive. Nothing else like it on the Speccy although it was pretty clunky to navigate all the menus. My favourite has to be the Amiga or PC versions of the original; much more streamlined and graphically attractive as well easier to load and save cities. I found the later iterations of the game got progressively bloaty and micro manage-y, lacking the charm and accessibility of the original.
I'm a hockey fan in general, but I appreciate the Kraken's sense of style and design and Climate Pledge was a great place to watch a game! My heart will always remain with the Hartford Whalers, though. :)
I'm a Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets (my hometown) fan, but I have to admit Seattle's jerseys are rather swank. P.S. Shame about the Whalers - as I was born about the time of the final year of the WHA's existence, I do recall the Whalers and Nordiques in the NHL, and in an ideal world Hartford and Quebec City would have their teams back as well, I'm just happy Winnipeg got a new Jets back.
There's two Mac versions, even. The earlier 16 color one has more character and, oddly enough, the better version for that platform despite having less colors. The later one is a port of the Windows Deluxe SC classic which isn't as Mac-like.

Why in particular?

I would kill for a SimCity 2k remaster. It is probably my absolute all-time favorite SimCity. I could do this same video for SimCity 2K.
Agree.. They're all great, but the SNES version's overall aesthetic is just too perfect. The changing seasons and sound track make it the best SimCity

Snazzy scrolling background ;)
(Also for your pc background, I need to know the flavor of those forbidden Pringles)
Loved the maxis SIM games back in the from sim city, to ant, to earth. they were all incredible. ;)

"Which SimCity 2000 is the best SimCity 2000" is a much more difficult question for me to answer, I think...
Your channel is amazing. Thank you!
You're welcome!

I started with Sim City 2000 on a Mac LC575 in my 4th grade class. It was my fav of the games we had. I didn't like the pre-2000 Windows version.
The clunkier controls of the SNES kill the experience for me, but I say that as someone who started on the DOS version.
Have played the SNES version most, then Amiga to a lesser extent. The SNES game being the best IMO with those typical Nintendo touches.
I dont know, i never played any of versions. But just visually, Mac version looks great.
I absolutely love Sim city SNES.
2:15 Seattle Kraken fan reveal! Was not expecting that in a SimCity video. GO KRAKEN!

SNES
Mac version is the nicest to play, slightly better than the PC versions IMHO. Also SimCity 2000... porntipsguzzardo!
