The Walk
United Kingdom
Приєднався 2 бер 2023
My name is Gareth Icke, and when I'm not working, or parenting, I like to walk, and explore.
Join me as I take a walk through the beautiful countryside of the United Kingdom, following disused railway lines, canal paths, and ancient pathways to try and discover forgotten history, and incredible stories from the past.
I am also partial to an underground explore, so you may find me down a lead mine or two, trying to uncover the history that lies beneath the surface.
I am located in the industrial heartlands of the midland England, but at any opportunity, I venture further out into this incredible land.

The Walk - EP 161 - The Forgotten Furnaces - Abandoned For 70 Years - Cowdale Lime Works - Buxton
Ayup! I hope you are well!
Welcome out on another explore!
This time I am joined by two old school friends, Josh and Turlough, from the Isle of Wight, and we're out exploring near Buxton, in Derbyshire.
The Cowdale Lime Works opened in 1898 and within a decade had become part of the Buxton Lime Firms. A group of quarry owners and lime works owners.
Once the Buxton Lime Firms took over in 1908, they extended the site, building a large number of structures in a very rare 'Neo-Egyptian' style.
The adjoining quarry closed in 1948, but the enormous kilns remained in action until 1955.
At that point, the site was closed down, and has been left abandoned ever since.
The remains were incredible. I hope you enjoy.

The 140 Year Old Colliery In The Woods - The Walk Snippets - Unstone, Derbyshire
Переглядів 67012 годин тому
This snippet is taken from an explore of the many colliery and railway remains around Unstone, near Chesterfield in Derbyshire. In this snippet we take a look at the 1871 coke ovens of Summerley Colliery. The colliery was only worked between 1871 and the mid 1880s, so to find any remains at all was staggering. These coke ovens were something else. Abandoned and hidden in the woods, for over 140...
The Walk - EP 160 - Abandoned For 125 Years - The Victorian Collieries Of Unstone - Derbyshire
Переглядів 1,5 тис.21 годину тому
Hello everyone! What an unexpected explore this became! I was in the Chesterfield area of Derbyshire, so I took a stomp along the former 'Unstone Colliery Branch' of the Midland Railway, to see what I could find. I went in search of the remains of the many collieries this short branch line was built to serve. All hope of significant remains felt lost as I trekked a mile or so into the explore. ...
The Walk - EP 159 - The Largest Explosion In History - The Destruction Of RAF Fauld - Staffordshire
Переглядів 12 тис.14 днів тому
During the Second World War, RAF Fauld in Staffordshire was used as an enormous bomb storage facility. The MOD had taken over the underground mining tunnels, to be used in the war effort. But on Monday 27th November 1944, something truly horrific happened. The missiles, and bombs in the underground tunnels exploded. It was the largest explosion in British history, and the largest non nuclear ex...

What a result this walk turned out to be! I am joined once again by Phil, Ande and Jake, and we're trekking the Caldon Canal in Staffordshire. We start off in Leek, and follow the 1800 Leek arm of the canal down to the stunning Hazlehurst aqueduct, and Hazelhurst Junction. At that point we switch onto the main 1797 Caldon canal and stomp down towards Cheddleton. En route we hop onto the abandon...

Happy new year, and welcome out on another explore. This time I am joined by Phil, Ande and Jake, and we're in North Staffordshire. We're here to take a look at a former tramway, built to serve the St Edward's Mental Hospital in Cheddleton. The railway was first built to take supplies during the build, but upon completion in 1899, the railway was taken over by the councils 'Lunatic committee' T...
The Walk - EP 156 - Exploring The Last Surviving Medieval Lighthouse In Britain - Isle of Wight
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
Hello, and welcome to another explore! I'm back visiting my childhood home of the Isle of Wight, and I'm here to explore the very last medieval lighthouse in the United Kingdom. St Catherine's Oratory, locally known as 'The Pepperpot' was completed in 1328, and was built as a penance to the Catholic Church, by a local landowner. In April 1313, the landowner, named Walter, and gathered a gang of...

Ayup! I hope you are well. Thanks for joining me on another explore. I am in the Derbyshire village of Dale Abbey to find the remains of a little known railway and tramway that once connected the sandpits and collieries of Dale Abbey, with the enormous Stanton Ironworks. The line opened in 1885 and was abandoned by the Second World War, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of remains to be...

Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
Ayup! In the year 1130 AD, a Derby baker called Cornelius had a dream in which the Virgin Mary appeared to him and told him to serve God "in the Deep Dale through hunger, thirst, coldness and nakedness". He gave up all his belongings and walked out in to the countryside until he stumbled upon some rocks. He began carving the stone into a dwelling and lived here until he died many years later. A...

Hello everyone, and welcome out on another stomp. Today I am in the town of Ripley in Derbyshire. I am walking a section of the former Midland Railway ‘Ripley Branch’ from the site of Marehay Crossing, through the site of the original 1856 Ripley station, through the site of the former Ripley colliery, then on to the 1889 Ripley station, where there are plenty of remains to be found. Once beyon...

The Tunnel & The Not So Great Escape - The Walk Snippets - St Lawrence, Isle of Wight
Here in darkest Colchester Essex, had 3 similar buildings, Severalls Hospital, Turner Village, Essex Hall. All 3 now housing estates. I lived about 4 miles from Severalls and if a patient escaped an air raid siren went off! I played for Severalls youth and often patients wandered across the pitch mid match. Thanks for all you do,keeps me sane.
Two very clever and interesting fellas 👍👏👏👏 Love the old footage and maps that accompany the blog and the searching out of old relics. Great appreciation for the fine workmanship needed to construct these edifices. 🫡 salute
Quality Video and the countryside is just stunning thanks so much for sharing!
The old connecting spur from the main line still has a couple of supports in the banking smack bang at side of A6 right at the side of the old corn mill. Used to annoy me as to what they were as they dont show up on many old maps !
I know. We got done by the light in the end, in terms of tracing that!
I’m watching this again and I think this Egyptian theme has gone to my head, as I’m hearing in the intro tune a similar cadence to jonathon richman’s, Egyptian reggae. I think I need to go back to the future although that’d be like Deja vu all over again, we need that hg wells Time Machine or atleast lidar to view all these quarry workings. I wonder if there’s any architectural drawings or any references to who the builders were?! Cheers
Another great lesson in history! Much love from Tasmania ❤
Thank you.
I pretty much pass this everyday. Always wondered about these buildings... Nice one for the info x
Great little place to explore.
terrific find , it really seems to me that the "donkey and cart tech" people of that time couldn't possibly have built all that especially as all the history of it seems to be so sketchy and we now seem incapable of building a floating bridge across from Cowes
Haha. So true.
Hayup Gareth I’m sure about the neo Egyptian either, looks like post brutalist realism ( I made that up, like what they do) or a concrete flying buttress lent against a pre Victorian brick entrance to the underworld. I imagine that lime production worldwide is worth a look as a heads up in previous centuries they do seem to increase around the wars and the resets, probably just a coincidence. I enjoyed seeing all the motorcycle tracks around the top quarry works, bringing fun to quite a serious area of past hard work I imagine you’d be walking like an Egyptian after a week or two working there. Cheers
Haha. I actually didn't even the bike tracks.
I like you and your Videos.
Cheers.
When will your father^s new book be available in german?
Should be already to be fair. Arma are the publishers.
You look like louis XIII,french King. You were him in a previous life.
I'm him in this life!
As enjoyable as ever!... always enjoy hearing you say Mate! when something gets your attention!... lots of the Keyboard Warriors probably don't appreciate the research you do before like looking at old maps and finding tricky long words for Phil to say!😅...👍
I do like stitching him up.
Great explore Gareth; the large concrete buttresses look to have been erected to prevent the kilns from literally falling over.
I reckon you are right, mate.
I think the Neo-Egyptian description was a stretch. That form of architecture was pretty limited in the 18th through early 20th century. Great finds again! BTW, we do prefer "Oh, mate", to OMG. 😁
Noted!
I've never heard of Neo-Egyptian either - which is a red flag in itself. Everything labelled Neo or Revival always is. I would firmly suggest that this is much older than they claim, meaning there were structures there before but it was adapted/changed etc. The big clue for me is Neo-Egyptian. Fascinating video, THANKS.
Thank you. Almost certainly older for sure.
It wasn't Buxton Water, it was a rival - Rockhead Spring. There were other neo-egyptian buildings but they were demolished despite the listing.
What a sicker. Where were they situated?
Yes that often happens, they are hiding something aren't they?
Been to Coalville loads of times and never knew all this existed, great video Gareth 👍🏻
Thanks mate. It's amazing how it's all still there. Glad it is though!
Great video Gareth. The ferry that went from St Helens went to Langstone, and was joined to the Hayling Island branch railway. Remnants are still there and the Hayling Billy Trail is a well marked and maintained trail from Havant onto the island. Maybe worth visit/video.
Great idea! I remember seeing the viaduct stantions as a kid!
Went there a few times a few years ago. Hasn’t changed much since then. Great spot for photos, great vid.
Cheers mate.
The original standard gauge railway tracks ran up to this point until the early 1980's , I remember them being taken up,I remember playing on those narrow gauge railways with friends in the late 80's I think although I could be wrong that it was the idea of s guy from myndd isa about the railway stuff there, think he had a signal in his garden or something, hope this is of some help to someone.
Cheers mate.
Ice one Gaz, love owt lost in the woods
Same mate.
So you DID cut the video😂....glad you kept the original slow-burner though
Haha. Needed my Simon Cowell moment!
Lovely vid Gareth, but I must remind you that Sad IQ Karn had a marketing ploy using the word "Maaate"... I'll just leave this here...
OH damn.
Awwwww Maayte...! Thank you, I now know more about that part of the five pits trail 👍🏼 I live in Holmewood so it's a massive stomping ground all around me. I will tell the story of Tommy Hullat to all my neighbours and all who will spare an ear. Amazing history 👏🏼🤩x
'Awwwww Mate' let's me know it's something Amazing! Love it, so pack in apologising. I've even started saying it myself, along with 'stoked' 'stomp' and 'spicey' 🤣 Keep up these historic happy smiley walks, Love em 'Maayte' 😅 x
Please don't stop saying "mate" , it makes me feel I'm right there with you . Thanks mate . Another fantastic walk and talk
Good video nice one 👍
Maaaaaate!!! Sorry Gareth, it had to be done, hehe 😜
Fascinating Gareth 😊😊
Since your last video I’ve been learning/researching about the differences/benefits of coal versus coke. Less smoke from coke, higher/longer heat from coke hence why steam trains/steel works/mining communities and cities found it healthier and more economical all round. I now question is this one of the reasons coal pits were starting to close, especially under Thatchers reign. As they say, follow the money.
How interesting! Cheers for that.
I bet some of my neighbours burn Their coke in ovens like that.. its a hellscape around My street. 🏚💩💀💨 haha 😢
This really was a terrif explore Gareth....!!
Cheers mate!
Hello Gareth you have set me off with my autism with your ovens lol haha really good video you obviously love them ovens things like that xx
Love old stuff mate!
@IckeWalks me too xx
That was a great video, those ovens were something very special. 😀😎
They really are!
Mate how many coke ovens, it’s like our take on an igloo and the polar opposite in temperature, I’m guessing somewhere there’s a housing development with about 257 really nice stone arches above there windows, I’m betting I know what the builder said down the boozer when it dawned on him where he could get his hands on a load of freestone for his new commercial opportunity. MATE.!!! Cheers Gareth great stuff. PS I’m still trying to recall the melting point of bricks, probably a broad range, I’m liking the mates by the way, we’ve all got vernacular it’s just apart of us.
Love it Gaz.
Fabulous! Hope the knee recovered!
Played ice hockey the next day. Haha. No sense no feeling!
Is the Aww Mate an Isle of Wight thing? Or is it an Ickism?
I think the latter!
That was incredible Gareth. Totally amazing. i love hunting for ancient stuff. really enjoy your walks. Made myself a picnic today with cake and everything. thank you
Sounds wonderful. What cake?
@@IckeWalks Lemon Drizzle cake, yum
Wow, those coke ovens at the end were an absolute monster of a find mate, especially the condition inside, I had no idea of their existence, Quality video as always.
Cheers mate, Hope you are well.
Proper walk that Gaz, can’t beat getting off the beaten track & exploring. That’s where the real treasure’s to be found !! Keep it up mate
Thanks Richard! Got a couple more planned this weekend.
Aaaaw mate, I think you need a new script writer mate😄😁

We LOVE your "awww mate" ...please don't stop!!!!❤
@@tassie2348 lol.
Not long discovered your channel, absolutely fantastic, given me plenty of ideas for walks and cycle routes local to me (Nottingham). Wonder if you remember, probably about 2009, you played a very well received acoustic gig in the pub I was running, the Albion in Hampton Court?
Oh mate, they were the days!
I've got two phones so I've given you 2 likes......loved that MATE great start too 2025 👍
@@RichardPerry-h2e cheers Richard!
I live a short distance from Unston and often walk to the viaduct, never knew about the industry there. Great video Gareth recognise the area's on your drone footage.👍🏻
@Frosty-w1x it's lovely round there.
That was an amazing find, after over 125 years. Good job, mate!

@MissyMadge great news! Yeah, got a scab on my bonce now.
