      @IckeWalks My great grandfather and his four sons lived on the approach to Hucknall Aerodrome.
      A Fairy Battle (I think) piloted by Polish aircrew crashed on final approach due to running out of fuel.
      It crashed into the house next door (Laughton Crescent) killing the family of four who lived next door.
      My Uncle Len was blown out if his bath, and said they could hear the screaming from inside the blazing house. All perished.
      It was also the the same place where they fitted the first Merlins to the P51 Mustang, and the flying Bedstead, the VTOL prototype. 👍🕊️

    Hardy Kruger played Franz Von Werra in the 1957 film "The one that got away", based on Von Werra's escape.

    My Great grandad who was a boer war veteran, was working in the canteen at Hucknall Rolls Royce at the time of Von Werra's escape. She said he came home and announced "We've caught one"! 😅
    As for Franz Von Werra, he was shot down and killed during operations over the Pade Du Calais apparently. Cracking vlog! 😉👍

      Hucknall Rolls Royce, where Von Werra was caught was also the same place where they fitted the Merlin engine to the P 51 Mustang, to replace the Allison engine. They also tested the first 'VTOL' aircraft there, the "Flying Bedstead" 😉👍🕊️

    Rolls Royce carried out conversion work on spitfires and hurricanes,mostly engine updates during the war but also played their part in making the P51D Mustang into the legendary aircraft it became by fitting three with the new Merlin 60 series engine.

    Another great video , but I wonder where all the earth from the tunnel went to? . I only dug out a small pond in my garden and the mound of earth was enormous and difficult to bag up and disperse , in December I'm sure it would be sodden wet too , I got a funny feeling there is more to many of these "great escape" tales than we are led to believe . Its as believable as Shawshank .

    • @IckeWalks
      @IckeWalks  2 місяці тому +1

      They started off by hiding on the roof. But then as I understand it, they found an underground water tank and filled that up with the spoil.

    • @IZingari
      @IZingari 2 місяці тому

      @@IckeWalks ok, it just sounds too improbable that these 4 prisoners could tunnel underground with a small wooden spoon and not raise any suspicion, with their activity and appearance , they must have been absolutely filthy from all that crawling in the mud . It may all be true ,and I may just be too cynical these days . Still a great story though and thanks for all your work . keep on truckin buddy 👍👍

    Lots of amazing history in the UK. A visit to JFK's sister's grave at St Peters church, Edensor near Chatsworth would make a good short film. She was married to the Duke of Devonshire. JFK visited the grave & it is marked with a plaque commemorating this.

    Being pedantic - von Werra did not escape from Britain, he escaped from Canada, then a Dominium in the Empire, very similar to India. If he had escaped frpm India would you have said he escaped from Brtitain? No enemy POW of Britain escaped from Britain during WW2. We still have some national pride left that we can call on.

    I watched 'The One That Got Away' after it was mentioned in your podcast. Top movie, filmed partly on location in Cockfosters in Philip Sassoon's opium trade funded mansion. Home to much Epstein-esque elite debauchery in the 20s and 30s and a candidate for the site of Camelot on its grounds. But I digress...

      Oh and re. friendly interrogators, somebody in Germany paid attention. The Luftwaffe's ace interrogator was an interesting character called Hanns Scharrf who specialised in the chummy style and lectured on it after the war

      @@ComUnSas The casting is perfect too! It turns out, and I realised this after the video was made annoyingly, that because they realised the Brits were nice to the POWs, the Germans improved their treatment of ours as a result, so in a way, the escape helped Britain!
