It's the 1980's, and dancercise is all the rage! Brytag: I'm going to feed your eyes to the birds, red-hair! Red Sonja: I don't need eyes to find you, I can smell you at a hundred paces! 😊
Regarding "Nutcracker and the Four Realms", I think Lassiter's insistence on twist villains was much of his undoing. So much that it revealed some bad things about that. But his replacement made things worse with her baggage.. But thankfully she's gone as well.
My favorite move named Nutcracker was from 1982 and It starred Joan Collins and Paul "Cousin Kevin" Nicholas.
Man, not heard of that one, but I wish I could find it!
What's with producers releasing films on the wrong holiday? Like with nosferatu getting released on Christmas.
I don’t know why the word “nutcrackery” made me laugh. 😂. Thanks. Merry Christmas!
😎
Three headed mice kings? Yeah, that's real Christmasy. Estimated Time of Arrival Hoffmann must have been chewing on the same mushrooms, as did Lewis Carroll.
I came across a Nutcracker adaptation called Christmas Dreams, which is one part Nutcracker and another part Little Drummer Boy, that you could include for next year’s list. We all know you’ll never run out.
Believe it or not, that one was on my list. I'll work that in next year!
>Werner Von Bear I have several questions
I think he was collaborating with the Rooskies!
Barkey gives us some stories that do and don't BITE! Watch your nuts!
I saw this on TV in the late 70s... I remembered it being far better than it actually was! Merry Christmas!
How have I missed this one!?! Will have to check it out! Merry Christmas!
Wish that Lee Meriwhether was on Time Tunnel was included.
There are a couple of Christmas Carol adaptations that might count as oddities. There's The Christmas Carol (not a typo...you know you're in trouble when your adaptation can't even get the name right), a very cheap and very short TV adaptation from 1949 narrated by Vincent Price. (The best actor in the production...and he has no part in the story itself!) There are several that feature Basil Rathbone: two live-TV musical versions from the fifties, A Christmas Carol with Frederic March as Scrooge and Rathbone as Marley (music by Bernard Hermann), and The Stingiest Man In Town, which starred Rathbone as Scrooge. Both had plenty of good points, including great musical scores, but were a bit hampered by the limitations of 1950s live TV. In 1978, Rankin-Bass remade The Stingiest Man In Town as an animated special...throwing in a Jiminy Cricket ripoff named B.A.H. Humbug, voiced by Tom Bosley, as narrator. And while we're on the subject of crickets and Dickens, Rankin-Bass also made The Cricket On The Hearth, an animated special VERY loosely based on the Dickens novella of the same name.
I think I covered those TV ones several Christmases ago. I think Frederic March is in one of them.
@@BarkeyDog I'll check them out. 🙂
I rather like the Nativity segment of The Spirit of Christmas...unlike the Night Before Christmas segment, the marionettes are strikingly realistic and the sets very detailed. It's beautifully done.
Santa and the Three Bears. Now there's a childhood classic for me! I actually had no idea about the live-action stuff, so I assume it was cut in future airings. (either that or I simply forgot about it) The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas is also a Christmas special I watched, and on its own, the ending is alright. But what makes it weird is that it got two sequels: "The Great Bear Scare," and "Ted E's Thanksgiving." (The first one is a downgrade in the animation department, and the second... I can't even recall, since I haven't watched it in a long time) Those two specials also kind of imply that Christmas ending didn't happen. Unless, chronologically, the Christmas one is the last one in the timeline anyway, lol.
These heart-warming Christmas Bear stories make me nostalgic for my childhood in Northern Utah. As a five year old child, I used to visit my town's local mayor at his residence. His name was Heber. This kindly old gentleman had so many delightful Christmas renemberancs to impart to his five year old visitor. One of them included a wonderful story about a beautiful black bear that he accidentally woke up one Christmas Eve while venturing into the bear's cave to get out of a snowstorm. What a wondrous Christmas bear that was. It took as many as four slugs at point blank range from Heber's Remington shotgun to bring it down.
Obviously that bear had too much eggnog and was feeling no pain.
I remember watching the Dancing Bears Special when it 1st aired... it was downright surreal! Especially when the Snurps sing!
Strange. I've seen "Santa and the Three Bears" several times in my life. They showed it to us in grade school. Never seen a version with the Ocean World stuff. It usually begins with an old man telling the story to his two grandchildren.
I vaguely remember that, too. It's better without the Ocean World stuff, for sure!
@@BarkeyDog Barkey Dog, you remind me of two Sesame Street Muppets: Baby Bear and Rowlf.
funny enough, I watched The Bears That Dance On Christmas Eve before this video came out.
I really? Love the paradise for Christmas and that ending. All could crave you so sad.But in a way he found christmas in the
Dean Martin mentioned. Instantly subscribed. It feels like hardly anyone acknowledges the King of Cool
Where are all the Christmas Sharks?!?
They're all at the big Christmas party where Santa sank an ocean liner so all of the sharks got Christmas dinner.
@@BarkeyDog Still waiting for the JAWS Holiday Special from 1975 with special guests Paul Lynde, Loritta Switt and musical guests Paul Williams and KISS!!
The inexplicable Ocean World scenes gave me flashbacks to the equally pointless Pirate World tie-in from the horror that is _Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny_ 😱 Speaking of Xmas oddities, you may want to check out the 1991 _Bloom County_ (or was it _Outland_ by then? 🤔) TV special “A Wish for Wings that Work” featuring Opus the Penguin making the titular request to Santa. I haven’t seen it since it first aired, but being a big Bloom County fan back in the day, it’s bittersweet tone stuck with me all these years 🙂
I've seen that one. Been a long time though. Bloom County was always interesting, Outland maybe not so much, but Bloom County was really cool back in the day. I had a friend who was all in to Opus.
Definitely see the parallels to Ice Cream Bunny! & yes... the Bloom County special is most definitely a forgotten Classic! Didn't Michael Bell provide the voice for Mr. Opus???
@@BarkeyDog I liked Opus just fine, but was more of a Bill the Cat fan (sorry Barkey 😸 Rosebud the Basselope was cool too! 😁) Never got into Outland beyond the first couple strips, after the emotional damage of Bloom County ending, i just had to walk away… i was kind of emo back then 😆
@@thrashpondopons8348 I believe you are correct about Mr. Bell 😁 I always intended to grab a copy of the DVD if i ever saw it in the wild, but it must be fairly scarce as i’ve never run across it all these years 😕
The only bear Christmas I've watched is "Yogi's First Christmas", which I show every year to family on Christmas. Being a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, there are plenty of mistakes to point out throughout the movie.
Don't want to be that guy but bears don't hibernate, they go into a state called torpor. It's where they reduce their body temp and sleep lightly, so that if they need to wake up quickly to fight off an intruder or give birth in cases, they can.
Well... they should still be snoozin' it up, at any rate!
Da bears!
I only can tolerate Santa and the Three Bears. It's a nice little Christmas story, and the soundtrack is actually pretty good. One of my favorite seasonal songs comes from this movie: Wintertime. And thank all the spirits you did NOT do Yogi's First Christmas this year! Merry Christmas, Barkey!
good review please review superman movie of james gunn when it comes out in theaters please good luck
I like Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas. It's a Guilty Pleasure of mine and I owned the DVD of it. I try watching it once in a while. :)
This 1920 something red-suited Santa pre-dates the 1931 image of a red-suited Santa that I thought was an invention of the Coca-Cola Company when they displayed his image on advertising posters. What???? Huh???? This can't be???? I've been expounding the Coca-Cola origen story for decades 😮. That's a lot of historical egg to scrape off my face.
Well, it gets worse. Thomas Nast created the modern image of Santa Claus in 1863. He also cemented the idea of the North Pole being Santa's home base.
@BarkeyDog CRAP!!! Foiled again by a talking dog show 😡
That'll learn ya!
Nah, the hat rightfully belongs to Frosty, not Professor Hinkle. Hinkle threw the hat away because he thought it was useless, and only wanted it back after someone else claimed it and started benefitting from it. It'd be like if you threw an old video game into a public trash can, and then someone else dug it out and sold it for a hundred dollars, and then you tried to claim that you should get the money because the game previously belonged to you before throwing it away.
No, no. Hinkle threw the hat AT a trashcan out of frustration, but it bounced off. He didn't actually throw it in there, nor did he pick it up and put it in the trashcan. When he went to grab it his rabbit had other ideas. That hat is Hinkle's!
I am a virtuoso of Post/Apoc Flics... & this is a fun 'must watch', even though certainly not what one could label as GOOD! (Tragic too... cuz it could have been EPIC!) & one thing where I remember Mr. Donner not playing a bad guy is as the lovable cult leader, Exidor in 'Mork & Mindy'!
The Landmaster is what truly sets this one apart. And the laser sky effects. I went and screened "The Spirit is Willing" (1967) which was Donner's debut. He's a ghost in that one, so technically a baddie, but mostly not? Strange how he got locked in to playing bad guys. Same thing happened to Bruce Dern.
@@BarkeyDog Whenever I watch DNA, all I can think is 'The Pieces are all there... this could have been SO much better!'. & SO true about Mr. Dern! Even when he IS the Good Guy... he's Creepy! YEARS ago, SNL did a Sketch about that! New Subscriber Here!
I remember the D&G Ep. The Miricle is Davey somehow manages to talk some shlub into buying TWO trees just so he can make it to the pageant! & Here's a long-shot for ya... 'A Gift For Grandma'! A knock-off muppet show, where a poor kid endeavors to by a purple handkerchief as a X-Mass present for his custodial Gramma!
Now that's one I've not heard of. It's not on Amazon or UA-cam, so far as I can see. Was it part of a show or a standalone Christmas special?
@@BarkeyDog Full disclosure... I'm not entirely certain I did not imagine it! It's not even listed on IMDB! I do recall it being a stand-alone & best guess, it was a 'Local Content' piece from a Boston Station (probably WLVI!) in the late 70s... When Channels did stuff like that.
Yeah, it'd have to be 56 or 38. I remember one of the local hosts on TV38 dressed up as a Martian when they ran "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" one year. IIRC, it was a pretty good costume that mostly matched the ones in the movie.
I must congratulate you on your attire. Very classy u_u
Thank you! My sartorial splendor is unmatched!
@BarkeyDog Quite so. Can't be denied.
You mentioned Garson being Flamboyant. I believe a lot of gay men are Flamboyant as an act to draw attention to themselves. I wonder if George Taki famous for his "Oh,Yeah" line is more reserved when around friends and family. I don't know nor do I care, it is not my business.
Dude, I just get such a kick from watching your videos! I love the humour, the selection of obscure films and especially....The Sexy Chicks! You have the top spot of reviewers from UA-cam in my heart. Thank you for the entertainment and may you and your`s have a merry Christmas!
