*PENDLE HILL FROM DOWNHAM WALK SUMMARY*
This Pendle Hill from the Nick of Pendle walk starts from a layby on the Nick of Pendle, just outside Sabden, a village in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire.
The walk is 10.95Km long, includes 355 metres of climbing and takes about 3 hours to walk.
The walk heads along the wide track from the laybys at the Nick of Pendle, climbing Pendleton Moor and Apronfull Hill. From there, we continue climbing until the path becomes less steep as it pulls into Ogden Clough. We then follow Ogden Clough until we cross the stream to start heading up the flagged section of the path up to the tri point on the summit of Pendle Hill.
Pendle Hill itself is synonymous with George Fox (founder of the Quaker movement) and the Pendle Witches - more about them in our Pendle Guide above.
There is a beautiful panorama from the summit of Pendle Hill, where you see over the Ribble Valley to the Trough of Bowland and Blackpool out in the West and then around to the East Lancashire Valley, the Yorkshire Dales and the Southern Lakeland Fells.
From the summit of Pendle Hill, we follow a wide gravel track down to the wall before striding out along a grassy path to pass by a weather shelter and a large memorial Scout Cairn while enjoying wonderful views across the Ribble Valley and beyond.
From there, we walk across Pendle Moor before dropping down steeply to Howcroft Brook in Ashendean Clough and climbing on the other side to reach Clitheroe Road, Pendle Ski Slope and the Wellsprings. From there, it is just a short walk back up to the start.
At the end of the video, we look at where you can eat and drink after the walk in the Wellsprings and the Swan with Two Necks in nearby Pendleton.

      I’m glad you found it helpful. It was early June when I filmed it, and as you can probably tell from the lack of people, reasonably early morning. My favourite time for the walk is end of April/start of May when the wild garlic is still out in the woods and the bluebells are in full bloom before you reach Janet’s Foss. I have a couple of bird books and one came with a cd…but I still don’t improve recognition wise!

    It was over 20 years ago that I walked over pendle hill, and this walk has brought it back to me. Can’t say it was definitely this walk, but it was long and hilly, and we were ready for a good meal in one of the pubs when we reached the bottom again. I love your walks, but I am now too old and less mobile to do any myself, so really appreciate what you do.

      Thanks…it is a very picturesque walk this one, especially on days when the water is still and you get the reflections of the surrounding hills. Being next to the water in the main, dogs can get plenty of swims! The weather can be a little less predictable, but these days I generally walk more in the Lakes in winter as it is just getting busier and busier during the holiday season. It’s also much easier to park midweek…

      @@walks4all Hi, its interesting that you should say that about this being the most walked route up Pendle Hill. I have been trying to remember which route we walked on a Halloween coach trip from St Annes College of Further Education as students in about 1973. There were hundreds of other people like us walking up the hill on the hallowen evening, all I remember was a line of torch lights ahead and behind us as we snaked up the route, never saw any of it in daylight but it was a great atmosphere. I did your up Ogden Clough, down Boar Clough route yesterday 3rd October, caught some great weather for it , (thanks again for the great video on that) and it definitely wasn't that route, so I am almost certain it was this shorter route in this video we must have done then which I am going to check out again later this month. Take care and happy travels.

    • @walks4all
      @walks4all 3 місяці тому

      Apologies, I missed your reply. It probably was the steps route. They used to hold walks from barley on Halloween and also witch/treasure hunts, although I think some of these may have been from the Sabden side. Hopefully, if you walk the steps way up, you’ll remember whether it was that way you walked back then. I have filmed recently the way up from the sabden side from the Nick of Pendle, so I should be adding that in a few weeks to UA-cam as well.

  • @langdalepass

    What an immensely useful and interesting video great use of graphics too with the OS route flyover and also the speeded up sections allowing the whole route to be clearly understood. I have a dog that's to big to lift over stiles if there are any, and can't manage them otherwise so seeing the full route and gate parts was very useful. Subscribed now thanks again. Will be there sometime over the next couple of weeks having seen this.

    • @walks4all
      @walks4all 3 місяці тому

      Thanks and glad you enjoyed it. I think the OS fly through is a great tool for getting perspective on the walk/area before you walk it. I use it quite a lot before I do my walks - easier to picture when you walking somewhere like the Lake District what other hills are nearby and how easily (or not!) you can incorporate them in your walks. I’ve a few friends who walk with dogs and they suggested at that start that it would be good for them to see whether their dog could get around the walks, which is why i film all the gates and stiles. I didn’t think about it at the time, but also had a few emails from people with prams and in wheelchairs who have attempted parts of routes they wouldn’t normally have set off on…so hopefully it useful for all! I walked over pendle this morning - after the recent heavy rains it was boggy in places but I was on a not very well used path - hopefully it’ll have dried up a little for when you visit!

    Fell runner records stand at around 3 hours ?? ( That's 7/8 minutes a mile - i wouldn't have thought that it's possible to do it in such a time; but may be it's just a hand full of elite level long distance runners who can actually run it in 3 hours - interesting )

    • @walks4all

      I think it’s actually an amazing 2 hours 46 mins!! I’ve been and watched the race a few times as I’ve known people running - annual 3 Peaks race always held last Saturday in April. There’s not many get under 3 hours but a reasonable number between 3 and 3.5 hours. These are the elite fell runners and often include internationals. There are quite a few hundred run it each year…

    Just wanted to say thank you. Followed the long route today and your video was a massive help! Took 2 hours 38 mins with some stops to take the sights in. Just one note I wanted to make, at 30:24 you mention walking down the right side of the wall, this was very over grown today, there was a couple behind me who went to the left of the wall which seemed and cleaner and level path to take, it does take you further down at the reservoirs but we met back up after our two routes. I'd prob take that one next time Again thanks for the vid, subscribed.

    • @walks4all
      @walks4all 5 місяців тому

      I'm glad you found the video useful and enjoyed the walk. Thanks for subscribing! I walked down that side as well a couple of days ago and would have to admit it is starting to get a little overgrown - the upside was 2 deer's were in the stream just past the bridge. United utilities, whose land it is do normally cut it back, but with the new bit of fencing, making the path a little narrower in places it does feel overgrown. I probably should have said July-November, until it starts to die away to maybe avoid that path and just follow the road, as the path can get overgrown. They are doing some work currently on the Upper reservoir, so hopefully when they are done there, they might cut back a bit along the path.

      @walks4all 5 місяців тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I do find Whernside the easiest as well to walk out of the 3 Peaks....following the way shown, there are no steep stepped climbs as there are with the other two - for some reason I always feel as though I've not done as much climbing when I reach the top, and I do find the views from the top better than the other two.

    • @walks4all
      @walks4all 5 місяців тому

      Unfortunately I don’t think it is, as I believe united utilities own aitken wood - so in theory you’d need their permission. I have seen a few people camp on the top of Pendle Hill itself from time to time, including one yesterday who was still in bed and snoring when I past about 6.30! Again not sure on legalities of it, but maybe one for Halloween 🎃 🧙

    What a fantastic video. Looking to do three separate walks in The Lake District in August 2024. This was on my wishlist beforehand but now I really cannot wait to do this one. Beautiful scenery and easy to follow. Thank you! Am I right in thinking the Cathedral Caves are near to Slater's Bridge?

      @walks4all 5 місяців тому

      Thanks - glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully this current sunny weather reappears in August! Yes, cathedral caves are very near to Slater Bridge - I was going to include them on this walk, but there were a couple of school parties there when I passed and I try not to get children on the videos. About 2-300 metres before you reach slater’s bridge, the caves are on your left and well worth a visit. If u look on an OS map, not often named but just says quarries(disused).

    I can’t think of any way this video could have been better. The judicious use of fast-forward was perfect for my taste, and the commentary was good. It elevates my spirits to know the English, well some of them, still have such beauty and freedom to Roam in it. And on such elegant, naturalistic, well-looked-after paths and gates.

    • @walks4all
      @walks4all 6 місяців тому

      Glad you found the video useful. The steps are quite a bit steeper than the gravel path…but you can stop and have a rest on both routes to enjoy the views! I find the view better going up the steps, so generally do it that way round as my knees much prefer the gravel down instead of the steps down, but you could do gravel both ways, which TBH is probably the easier route.

      Hi, sorry for the late reply. There is a pay and display car park next to the start by the Buttermere Court hotel - the postcode for that one is CA13 9UZ. That is not the Gatesgarth one though. The Gatesgarth car park is just over half way round the walk at the far end of the lake. The postcode for that one is CA13 9XA. Hope that helps...
